ABSTRACTPurpose: Extreme weather events are increasing with climate change. The physical and mental health of people served by social workers may be especially at risk from these hazards. This exploratory study examines if specific types of human, financial, physical, and social capital are associated with health impacts from excessive summer heat and extreme winter weather. Method: Data from resident surveys (N = 424) in low- and moderate-income areas of a Southeastern US city are analyzed with descriptive statistics and logistic regression. Results: Key findings are that health status and social cohesion are negatively associated with health impacts of summer heat and winter extremes. Conclusion: Further study is needed of how specific types of capital may help people cope with a changing climate. Social capital may be a particularly relevant area for social work to address within the pressing issue of climate, weather, and the health of vulnerable groups.

ABSTRACTEvidence suggests parental support mitigates the association between community violence exposure and internalizing symptoms in adolescents. This study investigates this moderation of parental support for emerging adults and compares it with that for adolescents. Data were drawn from the Pathways to Desistence Study using community violence, parental support, and their interaction to predict internalizing symptoms in a series of regression models for adolescents and emerging adults. Results suggest that exposure to community violence during adolescence and emerging adulthood had a significant association with internalizing symptoms. Mother support during adolescence moderated this relationship. Emerging adulthood was marked by an increase in parental support; however, this support did not moderate the relationship between community violence and internalizing symptoms. Interventions, programs, and policies that leverage the parental support of emerging adults may be a useful strategy to mitigate the negative impacts of community violence.

ABSTRACTPurpose: Youth with early onset schizophrenia (EOS) are eligible for an individualized education plan (IEP) in school settings, yet often have declining academic performance over time. This study examines the impact of IEP and comorbid conditions on educational outcomes for youth with EOS. Method: We used mixed models and logistic regression to answer the research questions using data from 129 youth with EOS who participated in a longitudinal study from 1998 to 2006. Results: Not all children had an IEP in all waves. Of those that did, findings demonstrated that having an IEP did not improve absenteeism or academic performance. In addition, regardless of whether they had an IEP, rates of dropping out were equal. Conclusions: Social workers should consider more individualized approaches to IEPs for youth with EOS to target the specific complexities of the disorder as well as its implications for school success.

ABSTRACTObjective: This study investigated the usefulness of the trauma intervention, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), for adolescents in residential treatment. Method: The study employed a secondary analysis of 132 adolescent trauma cases collected from youth while in a residential treatment facility in Mississippi. Results: Analysis indicated that clients showed significant decreases in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severity scores after receiving TF-CBT in residential care. PTSD severity scores were significantly higher for the residential care sample as compared to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network’s average baseline score. Females reported significantly higher PTSD and substance use scores than males. PTSD baseline scores, substance use scores, and gender contributed significantly to the prediction of PTSD outcomes post intervention. Conclusion: Implications, based on study findings, to enhance services for traumatized youth in residential care were explored and discussed.

ABSTRACTEstablished in 2011, the Center for Social Innovation at Boston College has focused on fostering “effective, sustainable social innovations that enhance social justice.” the Center is committed to building research evidence that is used for changing practice and works to disseminate findings through a three-channel approach: traditional research publications, convening of practitioners, and through use of media outlets.

ABSTRACTUsing as an example a project where the Norwegian Labor and Welfare Directorate developed a comprehensive model for the follow-up of low-income families, this article demonstrates the process of developing a program theory for policy-initiated interventions. The data consist of interviews with program developers, political documents from early stages, and observations of the program’s development. The results demonstrate that, although research inspired the program developers, the program was also the outcome of policy priorities, experiences from earlier projects, and input from the practice field. Multiple sources contributed to its relevance for the practice field, however, increasing its complexity. The program includes several intervention levels and follow-up areas and partially builds on elements found to be important across interventions. Although a program theory can be difficult to conceptualize within policy-initiated interventions, it is important to articulate it prior to evaluation and, if necessary, reassess it when data have been analyzed.

ABSTRACTThe study examines and evaluates the effectiveness of a federal and county collaboration in Pennsylvania designed to help military veterans with child support arrearages in the criminal justice system. The study focused on the veteran participants (n=232) identified psychosocial problems, their range of justice involvement, strategies to mitigate, address barriers and legal dilemmas through the collaborative. The average age 40, majority male, Caucasian, divorced, enrolled in Veterans Administration (VA) healthcare, serving on supervised parole or probation, homeless episodes, and income <$500.00 per month. In general, the findings enhance the limited body of knowledge about military-veteran child support and provide strategies and specific insight into the problems veterans face on individual, familial, and societal levels.

ABSTRACTIncreased attention to former foster youth pursuing post-secondary education has resulted in the creation of college campus based support programs to address their need. However, limited empirical evidence and theoretical knowledge exist about these programs. This study seeks to describe the application of systems theory as a framework for examining a college campus based support program for former foster youth. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 32 program stakeholders including students, mentors, collaborative members, and independent living program staff. Using qualitative data analysis software, holistic coding techniques were employed to analyze interview transcripts. Then applying principles of extended case method using systems theory, data were analyzed. Findings suggest systems theory serves as a framework for understanding the functioning of a college campus based support program. The theory’s concepts help delineate program components and roles of stakeholders; outline boundaries between and interactions among stakeholders; and identify program strengths and weakness. Systems theory plays an important role in identifying intervention components and providing a structure through which to identify and understand program elements as a part of the planning process. This study highlights the utility of systems theory as a framework for program planning and evaluation.

ABSTRACTObjective: Hope is an important component to adolescents’ mental health and well-being. While much study and theory have explored hope, few examine the idea within contextualized factors such as locale. Even fewer have sought to measure hope for urban adolescents. The Urban Adolescent Hope Scale (UAHS) was developed to measure hope in a contextualized manner as guided by previous qualitative inquiry. This study aims to establish initial validation for the UAHS. Method: Using findings from qualitative inquiry, a 24-item proposed measure of hope for urban adolescents was developed. Experts in various fields were consulted to provide face and content validity. The instrument was then given at school-wide needs assessment at an urban Midwestern high school. Results: Using a confirmatory factor analysis, fit indices (RMSEA, TLI, CFI, and SRMR) and measures of internal consistency indicated a reliable five-factor structure of hope consisted of Spirituality (α = .936), Personal Agency (α = .930), The Basics (α = .936), Education (α = .921), and Caring Connections (α = .875). Conclusion: The findings from this study indicate the UAHS has initial validity and reliability to be used as a measure of hope for urban adolescents. Future implications for research and practice are provided.
