Health Literacy: The Expanding Role of NHS Knowledge and Library Specialists

ABSTRACT The majority of working age adults in England struggle to understand health information, especially if it contains numbers and low health literacy is associated with poor health outcomes. This article describes the Knowledge for Healthcare Program in the (NHS) in England which develops skills, tools and resources to address low health literacy. It highlights best practice in knowledge and library services, improving access to good quality, accessible health information. The authors describe the changing context for this work in a time of structural review and consider some next steps in the light of the 10 Year Health Plan for England.
