Current metadata schema, internet search engines and databases of scientific literature have an Anglo-American language and cultural bias. While it is possible to catalogue or index non-English, non-Latin script publications and achieve some degree of success in the retrieval of such information, librarians and researchers are often disappointed by inconsistencies in the accuracy of search results for this type of publication and frustrated by the limitations created by the biases embedded in the technology and schema. This paper is the result of a two-year dialog between a Farsi-speaking medical librarian in Iran and an English-speaking metadata librarian in Canada. They present the argument that a metadata schema which incorporates graphical images such as Emoji along with keyword indexing or a controlled vocabulary and new search engines which can make use of the new schema for Boolean searching is a robust potential solution for the difficulties they discussed. While this new information seeking environment that requires both the edition of a graphical facet to metadata schema and new search engines presents the potential to break down significant intercultural barriers, the authors recognize that this undertaking is more than a simple technological or procedural change but would require significant agreement between and work from librarians, standards bodies and researchers.

The LC/NACO Authority File is a large cooperatively-maintained authority file that also functions as the Library of Congress local name authority file. In the Library of Congress BIBFRAME Pilots, catalogers access the LC/NACO Authority File as Linked Data in MADS/RDF serialization, through the Library of Congress Linked Data Service and the BIBFRAME Editor. This article explores the steps that enable BIBFRAME Pilot participants to complete authority work in a Linked Data environment. It also addresses the limitations, opportunities, and successes encountered by BIBFRAME Pilot participants as they interact with name authority data as Linked Data.

ABSTRACTPrior studies have identified a need for engaging researchers in providing and curating their identity data. This article reports findings from a qualitative study exploring how researchers use and participate in online research information management (RIM) systems and their requirements for information quality in RIM systems. The purpose of the study was to enhance the knowledge of how to design scalable and reliable solutions for research-identity data curation by examining researchers' motivations for participating in online RIM systems and contributing to research-identity data curation. The findings identify nine activity-related motivations for using RIM systems, five types of information-quality problems in RIM systems, and 12 information-quality criteria that researchers perceived to be important in RIM systems. This study also identified three levels of participation in RIM systems: Readers, Personal Record Managers, and Community Members. Design recommendations were suggested for institutional repositories and RIM systems to provide improved services.

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this research is to determine the appropriate MARC format for Farsi printed books and digital resources considering the present situation of MARC and information organization in Iran. For this purpose, a descriptive research methodology was applied and a researcher-made questionnaire survey instrument was designed to investigate the viewpoints of Iranian MARC experts concerning MARC use in Iran. A 5-point Likert-type scale checklist was for collecting the experts' perceptions about the importance of each MARC criterion. Iranian MARC experts were asked to express their viewpoints. The respondents were identified using the “snowball” sampling method.Findings revealed that by making some modifications to UNIMARC, we could meet the cataloguing requirements of the most widely used information resource in Iran, the printed book; however, due to the rapid growth of digital resources, the tendency to use them in Iran, and the limited capabilities of UNIMARC (i.e., having no link to digital resources and having no metadata schemes such as MARCXML, MODS, METS, and MADS), UNIMARC does not seem to guarantee a better future for development of library systems compared with MARC21.

ABSTRACTThe Archivio di Studi Adriatici (ASA) is a repository of the Institute of Marine Sciences (ISMAR-CNR) of Venice. The ASA repository, completely open source and open access, hosts natural collections, heritage books, documents, and maps of the Institute of Marine Sciences. It was developed following the discovery of a historical algal collection at the Biblioteca Storica di Studi Adriatici of Venice. This collection, after having been catalogued, has been digitized with a digital planetary scanner. Digitized specimens and metadata, compiled using Dublin Core and Simple Darwin Core formats, are hosted on a website, based on Fedora Repository and Islandora framework.

ABSTRACTLittle effort has been devoted to the systematic examination of published Linked Data in the library community. This article examines the quality of linked bibliographic data published by the national libraries of Spain, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany. The examination is mainly based on a statistical study of the vocabulary usage and interlinking practices in the published data sets. The study finds that the national libraries successfully adapt established Linked Data principles, but issues at the data level can limit the fitness of use. In addition, the study reveals that these four libraries have chosen widely different solutions to all the aspects examined.

The underlying conceptual models and assumptions present in works-based bibliographic systems are at odds with the ontological status of music as something that takes place in time. One approach to modeling metadata for music is to use the idea of the music scene. A number of key debates of popular music scenes research are introduced and then two short cases studies are used to demonstrate the challenges and opportunities music presents to the construction of metadata for music, particularly in relation to the idea of music scenes and linked open data. Finally some questions for future work and areas of critique are presented.

We propose a methodology for building consistent metadata for the description of scientific working documents. Our methodology is supported by distributed cognitive theoretical principles and implemented through a combination of anthropological, semantic, and linguistic approaches. Our analysis is applied to a particular pharmacist activity—namely, the adaptation of posology. Issues focus on the representation of situations that describe individuals, tools, and artifacts. Regular relations between these situations characterize types that allow the description of conceptual contents associated with these empirical objects. Because these situations and types are expressed by a set of metadata and then associated with current metadata, our proposal extends the nature of entities described by metadata to useful internal activity artifacts.

This study explains the results of an online survey of academic institutional repositories in the United States conducted in an effort to answer the following questions: (a) What metadata do institutional repositories use to describe and provide access to their theses and dissertations? (b) What quality control is being done for this metadata, and are quality control and controlled vocabulary even important in a digital repository? The survey found a general consensus among institutions on using the title, abstract, type, author, and subject fields. While there was disagreement on the importance of controlled vocabulary, respondents agreed quality control was important.
