ABSTRACT This paper investigates the evolving landscape of feminist digital activism in India by analysing Instagram posts from three major Indian feminist pages: SheThePeople, ThatDesiFeminist, and Feminism in India. The study asks how digital feminist practices on Instagram construct, contest, and reframe dominant cultural discourses around gender, power, and identity. Employing a multimodal qualitative methodology, it integrates Cultural Discourse Studies (CDS), netnography, and close reading to examine 300 posts as discursive interventions against patriarchal norms relating to marriage, motherhood, public safety, body politics, and emotional labour. CDS offers a culturally grounded framework for reading Instagram posts as communicative acts embedded in broader power-laden discourse systems. Netnography and close reading uncover how visual storytelling, symbolic imagery, and user engagement are mobilised as tools of resistance and feminist meaning-making. The findings show that Indian digital feminist activism is not only reactive to patriarchal backlash but also proactively builds alternative feminist grammars rooted in local sociocultural realities. By foregrounding India as a culturally specific site of feminist meaning-making and extending CDS to multimodal social media discourse, the paper contributes to scholarship on digital feminism beyond the West.

ABSTRACT This study explores how the BBC’s bilingual coverage of the October 2023 telecommunications blackout in Gaza reveals the entanglement of necropolitics with the media practices of transediting and journalating. By analyzing two reports, one in English and one in Arabic, produced by the same institution, the paper shows how cross-lingual transeditorial processes generate divergent narratives of the same event, reflecting deeper structures of power and epistemic violence. The English report frames the blackout as a humanitarian issue caused by technical failure, downplaying intentional targeting and obscuring Israel’s exercise of necropower through infrastructural destruction. In contrast, the Arabic version foregrounds the Israeli military’s role, situates the blackout within the siege, and includes culturally resonant language of prayer and resilience. These differences underscore that transediting and journalating are not neutral acts; they involve selection, omission, and reframing aligned with, or against, hegemonic narratives. Through textual analysis, the paper argues that the BBC simultaneously produces content that depoliticizes Palestinian suffering for English readers while offering politically explicit framing to Arabic audiences. This paradox highlights how language and editorial practices function as tools of epistemic violence or resistance, raising urgent ethical questions about narrative control, audience targeting, and visibility in settler-colonial conflicts.

ABSTRACT Under Taliban rule, Afghan women, who make up more than half of the country’s population, face systematic restrictions in accessing education, employment, and other fundamental rights. Despite efforts to silence their voices, Afghan women have not given up; they have adopted Innovative strategies to challenge the regime using digital activism and local resistance. This study focuses on the utilization of activism by Afghan women to challenge the repressive policies imposed by the Taliban regime. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate how the voice of Afghan women in social media and local cultural resistance can influence global conversations about gender equality and women’s rights in the context of Afghanistan. Guided by digital activism theory, this study first draws on in-depth qualitative interviews with eighteen Afghan women who played key roles in organizing protests against the regime’s policies. Second, a cultural discourse analysis of tweets posted by active women on Platform X was conducted to examine how digital tools enhance the visibility of women’s messages through creative strategies and flexible forms of resistance. The results showed that despite facing severe threats, women used creative strategies and flexible civic actions to reclaim lost rights and adhere to their protest goals.

ABSTRACT This article examines the reproduction of environmental Orientalism discourse in Riad Sattouf’s graphic novel, The Arab of the Future, Volume I and II from the perspective of left thinkers. Drawing upon theories by a number of critics including Whitlock, Tiffin, and Huggan, this article critiques Sattouf’s neo-Orientalist depiction of Syrians, particularly in relationship with nature. Although Sattouf offers an intriguing narrative of race and Western anthropocentrism, few critics have explored his rhetoric of environmental Orientalism. It is argued that ‘nature’ in Sattouf’s narrative is a politically charged entity that transcends the innocent concerns about green things or four-legged creatures; It, also, explores how nature serves to represent the Orient as a ‘morally deficient opposite’ of the West and how this, accordingly, reinforces the classical hierarchy of self/other, and normalizes the Islamic world as savage and irrational incapable of self-rule. Sattouf’s status as a native informer renders these otherwise biased representations of Syria as objective and authentic. It is concluded that Sattouf, through his instrumentalization of environmental imagery not only reinforces the classical hierarchy of the Occident/ the Orient but also normalizes the Islamic world as savage and irrational in order to support Western interventionism.

ABSTRACT In this study, we investigate linguistic diversity in teacher education in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, a setting where discourses on emigration and re-emigration are strong. The aim is to explore social discourses on linguistic diversity as constructed in teacher training programmes for teaching English to primary and secondary school pupils, in course descriptions at two universities, and the implications of these discourses for the suggested teaching practices. Four discourses were identified: double monolingualism, contrastive perspective, linguistic diversity as one of many types of diversity and English as a gateway to future possibilities. Students’ earlier linguistic resources in other languages were treated as negative for the development of their English-language skills. English and Kurdish were treated in ways that suggest they should be kept separate and skills in other languages were rendered invisible. This is likely to have an impact on students’ teaching in the future, making them less inclined to recognise their pupils’ prior knowledge of other languages. We conclude that, more research is needed focusing on issues of circular migration and diaspora, and on other themes than those dominant in the West and the Global North, such as high number of immigrants and issues of integration and assimilation.

ABSTRACT The present article compares the conceptualisation of the Spanish term justicia and the Russian spravedlivost’ with the English justice to determine the contextual uses and specific cultural features of the concept. The data used in the study is taken from three online corpora – British National Corpus, Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual (CREA), and Russian National Corpus. The investigation proposes the explications of the concept within the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) framework as it offers an effective tool to decompose and specify the linguistic features reflected in the selected languages. The results of the study reveal the main differences and similarities between the three languages and, in sum, prove the relevance of culture-specific semantic analysis of abstract concepts and the use of NSM as a useful tool in cross-cultural studies.
