Purpose This study aims to analyse the concept of agentic artificial intelligence (AI) and the relevance of information professional competencies to it. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on literature and a small-scale testing of the deep research services from Gemini and ChatGPT. Findings The eight promises that are made in the discourse around agents are elaborated, with the questions an information professional would ask. The main features of deep research agents are analysed. Information professionals are likely to be concerned about the sources of information in use and the reliability of outputs, and the wider societal impacts such as on the environment. Research limitations/implications The author questions how far the promises of the discourse around agents can be really delivered. Practical implications Information professionals should be involved in configuration of agents and training of users. Originality/value The paper is an early review of the trending agent/agentic AI concept.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to highlight the immense potential of holographic reference services (HRS), its impact, efficacy and quality of service delivery for Caribbean libraries. Design/methodology/approach A non-empirical, exploratory approach, which involved a critical review of existing literature on emerging global practices using holographic technology within libraries and academic institutions, was used. Findings The research highlighted the untapped potential of holographic technology on reference services and by extension Caribbean libraries. Research limitations/implications This research focused primarily on HRS and the impact that they will have on Caribbean libraries. It also highlighted the potential for greater inclusion of a more diverse user base, allowing seamless access for users who are differently abled. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is first of its kind in the Caribbean and is poised to revolutionize reference service and how it is offered to users. It also boasts the potential for greater efficacy due to its ability to be directly connected to the respective electronic library catalogues, databases and other online platforms.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the potential use of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) to enhance digital communication in libraries, with a particular emphasis on social media content creation. It seeks to identify emerging opportunities, explore key challenges and address ethical and institutional considerations related to the adoption of Gen AI in outward-facing communication practices. Design/methodology/approach The study draws on a combination of literature review and practitioner insights from a 2025 workshop hosted by the Librarian Empowerment Division of the Jakarta Public Library. It highlights how librarians are using Gen AI tools to generate posts, captions and visuals for social media, and presents selected examples and reflections from their experiences. Findings Gen AI tools enable libraries to produce social media content more efficiently, particularly in contexts with limited human or technical resources. However, their adoption also reveals challenges such as graphic inconsistencies, copyright ambiguity and ethical concerns. A key issue identified is the absence of clear institutional policies to guide responsible use. In addition, uneven levels of digital competence among staff may hinder experimentation and broader implementation. Originality/value This study contributes to the evolving discourse on AI adoption in libraries by focusing specifically on the underexplored area of Gen AI use in social media communication. It provides a contextualized account of how Indonesian libraries are beginning to apply Gen AI tools for creating public-facing content on social media platforms. By documenting early practices and institutional responses, the paper highlights both the creative possibilities and operational challenges of using AI in library outreach strategies.

Purpose Library and information science professionals play a crucial role in the stewardship of information resources and in amplifying an institution’s visibility. Nevertheless, a significant number of these professionals do not possess comprehensive digital profiles, which may lead to an underestimation of their professional influence. This paper aims to investigate tools and platforms designed to enhance visibility, enabling a clearer demonstration of impact and fostering greater engagement with institutional stakeholders. Design/methodology/approach This paper provides a synopsis of three broad classifications of tools and platforms that can be used in the construction and upkeep of digital identities. Findings This paper delineates a series of practical approaches, organized into three general categories, for constructing a digital identity: establishing a professional profile, monitoring scholarly impact and using Altmetrics to gauge broader influence. Originality/value This paper raises awareness on the range and efficacy of tools and platforms available for constructing and augmenting digital identities. Consequently, it contributes to equipping library and information science professionals with practical methodologies to harness these resources, thereby ensuring their sustained professional relevance and facilitating career advancement.

Purpose Critical evaluation of in-text citations is a substitute qualitative measurement method to determine the quality of scientific publications. Unfortunately, the development of tools to facilitate the measurement process has not received attention from academics. This study aims to develop a system to analyze the qualitative quality of publications in Indonesian-language or Indonesian written works. Design/methodology/approach The prototyping approach is used to develop applications with requirements gathered from previous research analysis and focus group discussions. Findings This research outcome, a Web-based system contains five methods for measuring publications based on in-text citations, namely, the location of citations (introduction, literature review, methods, result, results and discussion, discussion); frequency of citations, sentiment (positive, negative and neutral); function (utilization, introduction, comparison, explanation and links); and role of sources (data, supplements, methods and results). Research limitations/implications This tool has limitations that have the potential to be developed in further research. The notes given for each publication are made manually. In the future, this annotation process needs to be developed automatically and proposed to apply the Natural Language Processing methods. Thus, the analysis results will be faster and more accurate. Originality/value This paper contributes to the development of a system to analyze the citation quality of an Indonesian scientific paper. The system can be developed in the future to automatically detect the required attributes.

It surveyed various library websites and analysed literature dealing with varying forms of beyond reality technology to gain an idea of how libraries perceive the relevance of this emerging technology for incorporation in its workflow.FindingsThe study presented some use case studies to give an overview of the adoption of this technology in libraries. The study also outlines the scope of future possibilities for the expansion of applications.Originality/valueThe practical examples will help improve the understanding of practicing librarians who are contemplating implementation or preparing to cover more areas under this technology in libraries and encourage researchers to explore the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning with this technology in a cloud infrastructure to leverage maximum outcome in a broader perspective from this immersive technology.

PurposeThis column aims to explore how AI is being used to impact books and help them understand how it may develop in the near future. Exploring these possibilities will help information professionals better understand the ways in which this technology is already being developed to impact books, a technology near and dear to many libraries.Design/methodology/approachThis column discusses a series of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that are being used to change what books are. They include AI that adds context with the help of experts, AI that leverages the content of the book itself to create an interactive persona, and AI that makes books multi-modal either by adding narration and likely someday visuals inspired by the text.FindingsMany of these transformations do not require breakthroughs in AI technology. Rather, they only require the application of existing technologies, layering on new interfaces and frameworks.Originality/valueAs a book evolves, libraries, who know their patrons’ needs, have expertise and often operate within ethical frameworks, have an opportunity to participate in the process.
