Research Article10.22364/mhd.54.1-2.18Influence of the particle shape on the equilibrium morphologies of supracolloidal magnetic filamentsJun 01, 2018MagnetohydrodynamicsElena S Pyanzina + 4 more +4We investigate equilibrium morphologies of linear and ring-shaped magnetic filaments made from crosslinked ferromagnetic spherical or ellipsoidal colloidal particles. Using Langevin dynamics simulations, we calculate the radius of gyration and the total magnetic moment of a single filament at zero field and different temperatures, analyzing the influence of the particles shape, the strength of their magnetic moment and the filament length. Our results show that, among such parameters, the shape of the particles has the strongest qualitative impact on the equilibrium behavior of the filaments. © 2018, Institute of Physics, University of Latvia.Read moreCiteListenSave
Research Article510.22364/mhd.54.1-2.23Magnetic permeability of inverse ferrofluid emulsion: an influence of interdroplet interactionJun 01, 2018MagnetohydrodynamicsI M SubbotinA theoretical model has been developed to describe the weak-field growth of the magnetic susceptibility of inverse ferrofluid emulsion provided the interdroplet interaction is taken into account. The presented mean-field approach predicts a nonlinear dependence of the initial magnetic susceptibility on the droplet concentration and provides a good agreement with experimental data.Read moreCiteListenSave

Research Article1710.22364/mhd.53.2.19Transitions in a magnetized quasi-laminar spherical Couette flowJan 01, 2017MagnetohydrodynamicsC Kasprzyk + 3 more +3First results of a new spherical Couette experiment are presented. The liquid metal flow in a spherical shell is exposed to a homogeneous axial magnetic field. For a Reynolds number Re=1000, we study the effect of increasing Hartmann number Ha. The resulting flow structures are inspected by ultrasound Doppler velocimetry. With a weak applied magnetic field, we observe an equatorially anti-symmetric jet instability with azimuthal wave number m=3. As the magnetic field strength increases, this instability vanishes. When the field is increased further, an equatorially symmetric return flow instability arises. Our observations are shown to be in good agreement with linear stability analysis and non-linear flow simulations.Read moreCiteListenSave
