This article examines Mexican diplomacy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and argues that a transnational code of honor rooted in the practice of dueling governed diplomats’ behavior. It demonstrates that, in spite of domestic reforms that exalted the incorporation of the masses and the empowerment of women in revolutionary Mexico, diplomats continued to participate in the diplomatic culture of dueling—both actual and journalistic—that feminized the nation and perpetuated patriarchy within the diplomatic corps.

Legendary bandit Chucho el Roto was portrayed by renowned actor Manuel López Ochoa in a film series made and released in the wake of violent repression of Mexico’s student movement. The four films provide entertainment with their charismatic leading man, melodrama, romance and comedy. Yet, the series also allegorizes and critiques Dirty War tactics employed in Mexico by portraying how the powerful abuse their authority to criminalize, imprison, torture and murder young idealists with an alternative vision for society. The popular figure of the bandit thus constituted a timely vehicle for critical reflection about political violence within a repressive climate.

This essay takes as its focus the intense violence of the Decena Trágica (Tragic Ten Days), a short, brutal episode in the armed Revolution, where the coup to overthrow President Francisco I. Madero in February 1913 brought the chaos and destruction of war into the centre of Mexico City. The visual link between the Mexican Revolution and death will be explored, assessing whether such imagery could be seen to provide a counterpoint to the hegemonic ‘official' vision of the Mexican Revolution that was employed in the shaping of Mexican national identity in the period of national reconstruction that followed its military phase.

This essay investigates the extent to which continuity existed between Porfirian and post-revolutionary Mexico from the vantage point of economic ideology. During the late Porfirian era two distinct critiques emerged. Justo Sierra and other cientificos, regime insiders, in official and semi-official discourse, articulated one: a critique of Mexico9s legendary wealth. As a means to discredit the Diaz regime, liberal and conservative opponents of the government, especially social Catholic journalist Trinidad Sanchez Santos, articulated the other: a social critique of Porfirian material progress. During the Reconstruction period of the 1920s, post-revolutionary intellectual Daniel Cosio Villegas wove both these critiques together. Since he fused cientificos9 official critique of Mexico9s natural riches and opposition groups9 assault on the Diaz regime9s celebration of Porfirian progress, this essay reveals that Cosio Villegas9s post-revolutionary economic ideology was a hybrid that had continuities and discontinuities with the discourse of the Porfirian regime.

This essay explores the development of wireless communications from radiotelegraphy to broadcasting. An under analyzed and important topic, Porfirian and revolutionary wireless officials and policies laid the foundation for Mexico’s powerful broadcasting and telecommunications industries. From the beginning, communications specialists used radio for state and nation building, especially in the hinterlands. The Revolution briefly shifted the focus of wireless experts away from the frontiers and toward warfare; however, the upheaval actually expanded the number of wireless devices and technicians. These professionals subsequently became essential figures in communications projects carried out during the presidencies of Venustiano Carranza and Álvaro Obregón, as well as during the rise of broadcasting in the 1920s.
