Abstract The book Atlas of Fourier Transforms caters to enthusiasts of all proficiency levels. Here, the reader embarks into the world of Fourier transforms through carefully curated images of over 650 Fourier pairs. As the atlas unfurls, it includes concepts of symmetry, rotation, translation, addition, multiplication, and interference. For those well-versed in the art of Fourier analysis, the Atlas of Fourier Transforms offers an unparalleled dictionary of structures and their corresponding Fourier counterparts.

Abstract Prehistoric and man-made ancient wooden artifacts are continually being uncovered from anoxic waterlogged burial environments where they are protected from highly destructive oxygen-dependent wood-degrading fungi. Microscopy has played a crucial role in understanding why such valuable buried objects remain well preserved for millennia. Suitable microscopy techniques have revealed that under anoxic burial conditions, wood is attacked mainly by erosion bacteria, which are well adapted to functioning in such environments, but the speed of wood degradation is extremely slow, in most cases resulting only in surface deterioration even after thousands of years of burial of wooden objects. The information emerging from microscopy studies is also proving crucial in more precise targeting of technology development to adequately conserve/restore the excavated precious wooden artifacts for human benefit.

Abstract The practice of combining imaging modalities emerged from the quest to discover novel insights into the structure and function of various samples. As these techniques merge, so do their names, creating a plethora of unique acronyms that can seem like an alphabet soup. Highlighted here are several notable combination techniques such as Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy (CLEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence (TIRF), Selective Plane Illumination Microscopy (SPIM), and Two-Photon Excited Fluorescence – Second Harmonic Generation (TPEF-SHG). Each of these methods extends beyond the capabilities of their individual components to significantly advance scientific research. This article, Part 3 of our “Alphabet Soup of Microscopy” series, seeks to distinguish these popular combination techniques from their standalone predecessors.

Abstract Use of lithium-ion batteries is extensive with many applications. One of the most common analyses performed in quality control for battery production is the characterization of porosity after calendaring. In this study we report the use of micro-CT to evaluate porosity at the micron scale to enable geometrical quantification of the copper anode current collector. Micro-CT resolution permitted analysis of particle disintegration and delamination from the current collector, which provided a starting point for porosity characterization. Segmentation analysis revealed an average porosity below 30% with a wide range of pore sizes from 1.2 µm to 9.6 µm. This information is critical for the optimization of electrical resistance and may improve the economy of production by reducing the time for battery cell soaking with electrolyte.
