A novel technology, Optophoresis™, uses near-IR lasers to provide quantitative analysis of cells in their native state without labeling or cell processing. Experimental results demonstrate sensitivity and selectivity suitable for pharmaceutical and clinical applications

We have used short optical pulses to clock digital logic on CMOS chips, without using clock receivers. We present the benefits of this approach compared to conventional electrical clock distribution by evaluating the timing and power savings of this approach in a fan-out-of-four clock tree modeled after modern microprocessors.

A free space optical board-to-board interconnect is presented, utilizing a parabolic mirror to achieve high angular tolerance. A relation between the input and output angle of the system is calculated and simulation results are given.

This paper describes the design and implementation of monolithic silicon photonic devices for use in applications such as beamforming and adaptive nulling in phased array antenna systems. Low-loss fixed delay structures and slow-wave variable time delay structures are described.

Multi-channel optical interconnects were built using ultra-thin silicon CMOS driven vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser array and photodetector array. Optical data and image communication and signal processing by diffractive optical elements (DOE) were demonstrated from the optical interconnects.

We are investigating novel methods for harnessing ultrashort femtosecond pulses to increase the speed, provide privacy and reliability in transmission, distribution and storage of information in optical communication networks applications. To implement these features, realtime all-optical processing techniques for achieving information conversion between slower opto-electronic devices and the ultrafast pulse phenomena need to be constructed. This processing is performed in the temporal frequency domain by spatially dispersing the frequency components in a spectral processing device (SPD) and performing operations on the spectrally decomposed wave (SDW) [1] using its unique time-domain properties. These techniques enable femtosecond rate space-to-time conversion for multiplexing parallel data streams onto an ultrahigh bandwidth serial temporal channel, and, conversely, time-to-space conversion for demultiplexing an ultrahigh bandwidth serial temporal channel onto slower parallel channels.

We describe programmable interface hardware for a 160Gbps Free-Space Optical Interconnection (FSOI) demonstration system. Our board design uses eight (8) Xilinx Virtex-II Pro FPGAs to realize 64-channel, 2.5Gbps full-duplex links into the FSOI demonstrator system.

We present experimental results obtained from an optoelectronic implementation of a sonar adaptive array. The spatio-temporal correlation between the input signal and a reference signal results in a spatial pattern which reveals the position of the signal source.

Adding a dynamic hologram can allow a conventional volume holographic storage system to implement phase-conjugate readout without sacrificing hologram multiplexing. The materials requirements and systems impact of this dynamic “buffer” hologram are discussed.

Sources of possible optical crosstalk in parallel datalinks comprised of VCSEL-arrays and imaging fiber guides have been characterized using L-I-V, near field, far field measurements and simulations using beam propagation method. Input coupling, propagation through the fiber-guide and output spreading are evaluated quantitatively for their contribution to the degradation of link properties for high-density, massively parallel 2-D optical link systems.
