ABSTRACT The tendency of Indigenous people to direct their frustration and anger, due to oppression, toward members of their own group is known as lateral violence. While settler-colonization is often attributed as the main cause of lateral violence, research has not examined what specific aspects lead to lateral violence in Aboriginal communities. In a qualitative study, using yarning and thematic analysis, 17 Aboriginal Australians (53% male, 47% female) ranging in age from 18 to over 60, discussed what they believed to be the causes of lateral violence. Knowledge holders identified historical and contemporary causes and perpetuating factors of lateral violence, all of which were related to settler-colonialism. These causes included living in a colonial society, native title, access and competition for limited resources, the process of obtaining confirmation of Aboriginality certificate, identity issues and internalized racism, past traumas, and returning back to traditional lands. Settler-colonialism is a structure through which lateral violence was, and is, allowed to flourish. Challenges to the settler-colonial system need to be made to effectively combat lateral violence.

In Decolonising Governance: Archipelagic Thinking, Paul Carter explores how to approach regional governance afresh. He does so on the understanding that well-intentioned methods to address certain matters that concern him perpetuate ‘neo-colonialist assumptions about authority, vesting them in the language of administrative prose and the cartography of territory’ (p 1).

ABSTRACT In this article, I look at how the modes of knowledge production in the digital age construct new colonial relations. I argue that these cybercolonial hierarchies are defined by a new elite: an artificial intelligentsia. In this regard, I discuss how the epistemic shifts in cybercolonialism redefine the role of postcolonial intellectuals in the digital age. In order to trace these shifts, I analyse the 2018 data scandal concerning Cambridge Analytica, a now defunct British political consulting firm allegedly involved in electioneering in 68 countries, to show that the power held by this artificial intelligentsia is encoded within a largely inaccessible field of computing, producing information that looks rhetorically neutral but is artificial in nature. My analysis demonstrates that this kind of knowledge production deepens the geopolitical hierarchies between the Global North and South as it bears new mechanisms of silencing. For the silenced subjects in cybercolonialism I coin the term cybaltern. The cybaltern refers to a group of people whose voices are muted and rendered unheard, paradoxically despite and because of the digital tools available to them. With this in mind, postcolonial intellectuals are given the task of decoding the discursive gaps and traps that (re)produce a condition of cybalternity.

ABSTRACT This article considers the world-famous rivalry between two Scottish based football clubs, Rangers and Celtic. It reflects on dominant representations of the origins, evolution and meaningfulness of this clash. A critical reading of these representations demonstrates they largely ignore or simplify the significance of history for this contest. This study contends that recognising the importance of aspects of Scottish/British imperialism especially contributes to a more informed understanding of these totemic clubs’ foundations, heritages and supporter enmities and throws light on contemporary postcolonial socio-cultural and political identities in Scotland generally. Scrutinising both football commentary and contemporary artistic representations of past imperialist endeavours – in particular, the Great Tapestry of Scotland and Black Watch – contributes to a better understanding not only of this sporting rivalry but also to how Scotland’s role as junior partner with England in the British Empire project, particularly in relation to Ireland, is remembered, contested, overlooked or celebrated in contemporary Scottish society.

ABSTRACT The literature on ‘worlding IR’ that aims to recognize the possibility of the subject position of the non-West is growing. Offering a textual analysis, this article aims to contribute to critical IR debates by applying cinematographic apparatus theory to identify how the dominant subject position in IR is still reserved for the Western author and how the Western subject remains intact in worlding IR theorizing. The article treats worlding IR theorizing as if it functions as a camera connected to the ‘Western eye’, which turns the postcolonial usage of ‘worlding’ into an illusion that is reified and alienated. The peril of the IR adaptation of ‘worlding’ is the positioning of the West as a signifier that allows the theorist to forget that the non-West is a construct that gains meaning only in the terms of the prevailing colonial semiotics of the IR discipline. Worlding IR practices maintain the monocular Western perspective that they are trying to dis- or re-place. Therefore, this article concludes that ‘seeing IR in a new light’ is hardly possible as long as the theorist is positioned like an eye-camera, an ideological apparatus, seeing the world from a particular perspective centred by Western epistemology, projecting the world as imagined by the Western eye.

ABSTRACT This essay investigates German Jews’ conceptualization of colonialism, and its consequent meanings regarding their identity formation in the years between 1884 and 1919. The discussion tackles the intersections and disjunctions of identities among German Jews of various orientations, as inspired by the colonial venture and within globalization process. The analysis reveals the interplay between the endorsement of colonialism by Jews as part of their German national identification, and the impact of growing antisemitism and racial attitudes nourished by the encounter with other ‘inferior races’ in the colonies. It explores the ideological parallels that Jews perceived between German and European colonization, and the Zionist settlement in Palestine. The article also demonstrates how Jews’ increasing exposure – real or imagined – to different places and cultures as part of the colonial experience stirred ideas of Jewish racial superiority and distinctive nationalism, alongside transnational perspectives that encouraged a broader sense of Jewish solidarity.
