Abstract Paper aims This paper presents teachers and students perspectives of integration Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses contents into the first year of Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) program through Project-Based Learning (PBL). Originality These perspectives provide strategies that IEM teachers could use to challenge students to apply STEM contents to design a product and its production system by developing a semester interdisciplinary project. Research method Grounded on project deliveries and an on-line questionnaire, the teachers and students’ work and perceptions were analysed in order to understand and to evaluate the effectiveness of such strategies. Main findings Results pointed out a general satisfaction of the teachers with the way teams integrate the STEM contents to design the production system and the product and students proud of their projects. Implications for theory and practice PBL is recognized as an active learning methodology that engages students in their own learning process and allows them to realize the relevance of all courses and the role of each to design a product/production system. Nevertheless, is fundamental a good knowledge of the PBL process to achieve this.

Abstract Paper aims To analyze and characterize a supplier network under the analytical perspective of structural, relational and cognitive embeddedness. Originality Analysis of a network of suppliers in a soft drink industry using Social Network Analysis (SNA) techniques. Research method The case study was used as a research strategy. The analysis of structural perspectives, relational and cognitive embeddedness and their respective variables were considered, as well as measures of centrality and density of the network of suppliers. Main findings The analysis allowed to establish the characteristics of the network of suppliers regarding structural, relational and cognitive embeddedness and their respective variables. However, it should be noted that the manuscript addresses a single case study, and it is not possible to generalize the results obtained. Implications for theory and practice The findings of this paper can be used as a basis to understand how to use the main metrics of social network analysis to investigate the structural, relational and cognitive characteristics of a company and your network.

scientific publications on distribution network design have presented the following aims: (1) cost minimization; (2) profit maximization; and (3) service level. To achieve these aims, the logistic network design must make decisions on: (a) facilities; (b) transportation; and (c) inventory allocation (Kadziski et al., 2017). However, Mohammed & Wang (2017) and Fahimnia et al. (2016) explain that the difficulty in making decisions to adopt the most effective logistics strategy lies in the difficulty of analyzing trade-offs among variables that compose the network design. In 2010, during the COP 16 (Conference of the Parties) of UNFCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), the international community undertook to maintain the global average temperature increase at 2 C above pre-industrial levels for the first time, which is known as The Cancun Agreements (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, 2010). By 2015, during the COP 21, the Paris Agreement was signed, which contributes for countries to sign a more rigorous agreement, keeping the average global temperature

Paper aims This article aims at investigating the implementation level of Lean Supply Chain (LSC) practices in hotels’ supply chains. Originality The proposed method allows to characterize LSC implementation in such an unusual context, identifying improvement opportunities and checking for discrepancies in their implementation. Research method Six different supply chains of high-quality hotels were analyzed through semi-structured interviews. Interviewees played key roles in their purchasing departments and presented large experience in the hospitality sector. Main findings Results were consolidated and for each case attributes were assigned to measure the implementation level of ten practices. Implementation scores were compared to a perceived average importance degree in order to verify convergences and divergences between the desired and actual improvement initiatives. Implications for theory and practice The applicability of LSC practices in services still needs further exploration. In the hospitality sector, whose evidence is even scarcer, this study provides a more holistic approach enabling a deeper understanding of the necessary adaptation for a successful implementation.

Abstract Paper aims The demand for quality health services is increasing and the efficiency in hospitals is related to the continued improvement in their processes and services. Faced with this problem, this study aimed to perform a literature review of the application of lean health care to hospital services. Originality Link between theory and practice, helping health professionals in their routine. Research method The concepts of bibliometrics were used. The databases that make up the sample are ISI Web of Science, Scopus, Lilacs, PubMed, and Cinahl; all the articles were in the ISI Web of Science database. Main findings The analyses suggest that the continuous improvement in processes and in the quality of the services offered are factors that influence the development of teams concerned with patient safety. Implications for theory and practice Shows the results and difficulties encountered by hospitals with the implementation of lean methodologies.

Abstract In recent years, Flipped Classroom started to be used as an effective way of teaching Engineering among various strategies in higher education. However, enabling and using the flipped learning is a complicated task, not a straightforward goal that can be simply achieved through a combination of face-to-face and online activities. It requires a more sophisticated understanding of effective teaching methods to manage the shift from the traditional to the flipped learning and the optimum adaptation of technology as part of this change. Given this challenge, this research work provides a personalized model of the flipped classroom and investigates through a case study in an Engineering School how our approach can be used to improve teaching of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Engineering. It assesses by using empirically data related to the interaction of the various actors at different levels of abstraction, particularly from a gender perspective, the relevance and the impact of the flipped classroom on student learning and achievement in ICT Engineering Education.

"Important research efforts have been developed to account for power in the analysis of supply chains. This paper argues that further gains may arise by considering organizations as social constructions mediated not only by power relations, but also by cultural representations intrinsically intertwined to it. Its purpose is to discuss the dynamics of stability and change in supply chains based on the Strategic Action Fields (SAFs) approach. A theoretical essay was elaborated discussing some of the main implications of this perspective to the study of supply chains and presenting propositions to enable the construction of research objects and guide empirical studies in the area. Propositions emphasize how ongoing cultural-political relations circumscribed to different fields, including the organization, with its internal disputes."

Abstract This research aims to propose and try out a model to assess the Industrial Engineering students’ satisfaction, with a focus on private higher education institutions. The research tool used in this study was the Student Questionnaire 2011 National Exam for the Assessment of Student Performance (ENADE), made available by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC). The questions were designed to assess undergraduate students general satisfaction based on the following constructs: Teacher Involvement, Student Interest, Course Demands, Course Organization, and General Satisfaction. A new construct was added to this research: Infrastructure. The methods employed to analyze students’ responses concerning their satisfaction with the service provided by higher education institutions were: Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling, with the support of the software package SPSS® (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) and the AMOS® module. The hypotheses proposed in the model indicate that the construct Teacher Involvement is key to Student General Satisfaction.
