The business environment is surrounded by economic uncertainties, which shows the need to develop methodological practices that make it competitive, sustainable and innovative. The purpose of this paper is of analysing the relationships between the project management practices, the product and process innovation, and the sustainable competitive advantage in enterprises in Southern Brazil. This research has a quantitative and descriptive character, in which the data were collected through a survey in 226 enterprises in the Activity Sectors of Industrial Manufacturing, Commerce and Services. Data analysis done through the Structural Equation Modelling, we used the following techniques and methods: Exploratory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, and Hypotheses tests. The research showed that enterprises use project management practices and have product innovation and process innovation, which are essential for sustainable competitive advantage. However, the enterprises are moving towards proactive behaviours, since they present innovative actions for their market permanence and competitiveness, once the organisations face constant legal and political enforcement, due to the globalised market. The research shows evidence which may help the enterprises’ managers and decision-makers to improve or influence their enterprises’ competitive and sustainable performance. In this sense, the practical implications of the research are presented to add value to project managers and researchers.

This study builds a moderated mediation model to empirically investigate the impacts of product modularity and supply chain integration (i.e. supplier, customer, and internal integration) on the flexibility and moderating effects of the product life cycle (i.e. growth and maturity stages) on the relationships using data collected from 204 Chinese manufacturers. The findings reveal that both supplier integration and internal integration mediate the relationship between product modularity and flexibility. Moreover, the indirect effect of product modularity on flexibility through supplier integration is stronger during the growth stage than during the maturity stage. There is no difference in the indirect effect of product modularity on flexibility through internal integration, which is significant in both the growth and maturity stages. In addition, the impact of product modularity on customer integration is significantly stronger, whereas that of customer integration on flexibility is significantly weaker during the growth stage than during the maturity stage.

Medium enterprises (MEs) form a majority of enterprises in several regions, yet they are underrepresented in the literature. The digital transformation known as Industry 4.0 (I4.0) brings new data streams into enterprises. MEs and large enterprises will both leverage business intelligence and analytics (BI&A) to improve their business performance, so the study of the conditions favouring value creation of BI&A is of interest. However, there are few studies focusing on the impact of business intelligence and analytics (BI&A) on value creation in I4.0 and none focusing on MEs. Using a multiple case-study design, this paper explores factors linked to BI&A business value creation in manufacturing MEs that are undergoing an I4.0 transformation. Findings suggest enterprises resources and capabilities are not sufficient to predict business value: organizational learning and organizational culture have a non-negligible influence for MEs.

Currently, industrial companies are increasingly introducing services to extend their tangible products. Remote monitoring solutions are one of the most implemented services by machine builders to manage their relationship with customers and also improve their business performance in the digital manufacturing era. However, the conventional method of remote monitoring cannot fulfill distributed business environments. Therefore, new solutions are needed to enable remote connection in manufacturing. By reviewing recent literature and proposing new features for software which can be used for remote service and operations, this research paper introduces a remote monitoring system connecting into a central cloud-based system with edge computing network architecture, namely Cloud-based Remote Monitoring (CloudRM). This proposed CloudRM also has been implemented in two different case companies for analysis and evaluation from a value proposition and technical implementation point of view. It shows significant improvement in production management and measurement by using CloudRM.

Sterilization plants process all reusable materials used in hospitals during different stages of healthcare provision. Most items sterilized come from the surgical theater in the form of individual instruments, linen and surgical trays. Reducing the number of instruments in trays impacts on the performance of the sterilization process. Here, we propose a three-phase method, based on lean healthcare principles, cluster analysis and kaizen groups of experts to rationalize surgical trays, reducing sterilization processing costs. We innovate by proposing a strategy to approach tray rationalization prioritizing surgical specialties that are both complex and frequent, and by using group technology to cluster surgical trays expediting expert analyses carried out by kaizen groups. Our propositions were tested in a high complexity, tertiary care hospital, covering 12 surgical specialties, reducing the number of instruments by average 9.75%, and the time-to-assemble trays by average 9.68%, obtaining annual savings of US$285.756,00 in sterilization processing costs.

Collaboration with suppliers in New Product Development (NPD) is essential for business competitiveness. However, the management of such collaborative project needs to focus on interactions between team members from different companies since they performed inter-organizational activities. While the impact of collaboration with suppliers on NPD project performance has been widely studied, the investigation of practices to support daily collaborative activities between both teams has received limited attention. This paper aims at developing a framework of operational practices for successful inter-organizational collaboration in NPD. The practices enacted by both project teams in six case studies were examined according to the stages of the collaboration and a knowing perspective. The results revealed some peculiarities linked to the inter-organizational context. Practices interact with each other across stages with a specific dynamic. More particularly, early in the project, practices to justify the collaboration with the suppliers are determinant for practices related to the creation of social interactions between project members and project commitment. The results also show that boundary objects are useful formal socialization mechanisms for supporting the undertaking of collaborative work.

Intellectual capital and collaboration with universities are vital knowledge management practices for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to innovate and improve the effectiveness of their operations. This study investigates empirically the impacts of intellectual capital and university knowledge on indigenous innovation and how business and institutional environments affect the relationships. The research model is tested using moderated regression analysis and data collected from 150 SMEs in India. The results show that intellectual capital and university knowledge improve indigenous innovation, both individually and interactively. The effect of intellectual capital in indigenous innovation is amplified by dysfunctional competition whereas the effect of university knowledge in indigenous innovation is attenuated by environmental uncertainty. In addition, we find that indigenous innovation is positively associated with business performance. The impact of indigenous innovation on business performance is enhanced by dysfunctional competition but reduced by environmental uncertainty.

Inter-firm learning though partnering with suppliers is often considered as a relatively cheap way to develop the knowledge necessary for innovating operations procedures. SMEs may benefit, especially from the inflow of information, as they face multiple restrictions on innovating manufacturing or delivery processes due to their small size and limited resources. Based on the two studies – a logistic regression analysis and a configuration analysis – evidence was found that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME) need to integrate knowledge sources in distinct knowledge configurations. In particular, it is shown that an operation process innovation (OPI) strategy for SME is incomplete if it does not find a way to combine internal and external knowledge to innovate operation procedures. The main contribution of this paper is to uncover the precise composition of effective knowledge configurations, which leads to innovation.

Despite the considerable number of papers addressing knowledge management (KM) aspects in supply chains, many research issues in the area are still neglected. One of the main research gaps in this field concerns the maturity level of KM practices adoption by small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This paper addresses this research gap by developing a framework to support the analysis of the maturity level of KM adoption in an SME context. The framework is applied in a multiple case study developed to investigate the extent to which SMEs operating in the food sector are deploying KM practices to support more sustainable initiatives. By relating KM maturity levels, perspectives and processes to sustainable practices concerning food waste and by-product synergies, the paper makes an original contribution to advance theory and practice in the area. The paper also points out potential barriers that companies face to implement sustainability-related KM practices.

The increasing popularity of lean thinking has made the analysis of value-adding (VA) and non-value adding (NVA) a popular activity to eliminate waste and improve productivity. Despite the great success of the Taiichi Ohno’s waste taxonomy and its adaptation and diffusion into the maintenance sector, a systematic classification of VA and NVA remains as a significant challenge for lean practitioners. The aim of this research is to develop a system to classify VA and NVA activities for lean applications in turnaround maintenance (TAM) projects. First, a comprehensive literature review was conducted on existing methods of defining and classifying value and waste. As a result of this review, an initial system to classify VA and NVA in TAM was proposed, which was then refined in three focus group studies conducted with a group of TAM participants. The improved classification system was evaluated by applying value stream mapping (VSM) in terms of the ontology effectiveness and efficiency using a sample case. The classification system contributes to an accurate classification of value, and waste and the relevant root causes in the TAM processes. The classification system provides an insight on a consolidated understanding and classification of VA and NVA in TAM projects.
