During this time of immense suffering in Israel and Palestine, how do we hold the opposites—compassion for all of those involved? Archeological findings challenge our core assumptions about the region—that there has always been conflict between the two peoples. Instead, the most recent discoveries suggest that Israelis and Palestinians both arise from the same people, who for thousands of years worshipped the Sacred Feminine. The loss of the Feminine aspect of the sacred—and the need for Her redemption—lies at the core of Jewish mystical cosmology. Through active imagination and Biblical analysis, the article explores how disconnection from feminine consciousness leads to a loss of relatedness, compassion, and recognition of shared origins. The article explores the Biblical story of Moses’ anger in striking the rock and being denied the right to enter the Promised Land. The Queen of Sheba, an embodiment of Wisdom, is venerated in Islamic, Christian, and Jewish mysticism, as well as in alchemy. The coniunctio between King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba serves as an archetypal image of cross-cultural reconciliation, uniting masculine and feminine aspects of consciousness. Synthesizing Jungian theory, Jewish mysticism, archaeomythology, and matriarchal studies, this work proposes that recovering awareness of shared Great Mother Goddesses may help dissolve projections and recognize common ground. Collective healing requires what individuals undergo in analysis: dissolving egoic narratives to open to the Self’s larger story, reintegrating the exiled feminine, and moving toward wholeness symbolized by alchemical coniunctio.

This article describes the author’s journey into a deeper relationship with trees after two key dreams, which came to her following her certification as a Jungian analyst. She delves into the mystery of the opposites around trees—good mother/bad mother, masculine and feminine, death and renewal through fire—and the alchemy in nature, particularly as seen in the life of the giant sequoia trees that grace certain areas in the Sierra Nevada mountains. She immerses herself into the literal and symbolic life of trees and the many ways they can touch the soul, as expressed in numerous world traditions. Her reflections end with a journey to a redwood tree, Luna, in which a tree activist sat for over two years to preserve these unique trees and the forests that sustain them. The narration ends with her visit to the tree with members of the group who care for it after it survived an attempt to cut into its trunk and cause its demise. Through scientific understanding, our world has become dehumanized. Man feels himself isolated in the cosmos. He is no longer involved in nature and has lost his emotional participation in natural events, which hitherto had a symbolic meaning for him. Thunder is no longer the voice of a god, nor is lightning his avenging missile. No river contains a spirit, no tree means a man’s life, no snake is the embodiment of wisdom, and no mountain still harbors a great demon. Neither do things speak to him nor can he speak to things, like stones, springs, plants, and animals. He no longer has a bush-soul identifying him with a wild animal. His immediate communication with nature is gone for ever, and the emotional energy it generated has sunk into the unconscious. (Jung, 1976 , para. 585)

The purpose of this article is to explore the symbolic significance of the butterfly and phoenix as archetypal images of transformation and rebirth within the framework of C.G. Jung’s analytical psychology. Drawing on the concepts of individuation and the Self contained within Jungian theory and the symbolism of resurrection and transformation, the essay examines how the two mythological symbols of the butterfly and phoenix reflect key stages of psychological development. The butterfly is interpreted as a symbol of human transformation, psychopompism, and human resurrection, while the phoenix, with its dramatic cycle of destruction and renewal, is associated with a symbol of divinity and divine resurrection. Through comparative mythological analysis and symbolic amplification, this paper argues that the Christian symbol of the phoenix is a rebis, incorporating elements characteristic of the butterfly symbol, replacing the traditional image of the phoenix. This symbol illustrates the process of individuation, depicted as a process of emergence of the Self. Placing these symbols within the context of Jungian theory allows us to better understand how symbols of transformation and rebirth play a role in the development of human personality.

The myth of Persephone’s abduction by Hades and her cyclical journey between the Underworld and the living world embodies key psychological themes, including psychosis, trauma, and posttraumatic growth. This essay explores the myth’s inherent ambivalence, highlighting tensions between coercion and autonomy, transformation and regression, and suffering and renewal. These dynamics parallel cognitive disorganization, dissociation, and conflicting attachments observed in psychotic disorders. Persephone’s fate serves as a metaphor for disorganized attachment and trauma cycles, drawing on psychodynamic and attachment theories. Her oscillation between two realms mirrors the instability of psychosis, where individuals navigate fragmented reality and structured cognition. Furthermore, her descent aligns with Jung’s concept of the “night sea journey” [Nachtmeerfahrt], symbolizing psychological rebirth. From a clinical perspective, trauma is reframed as a transformative rather than destructive experience, offering insights that enhance therapeutic interventions, foster resilience, and promote posttraumatic growth. More broadly, this analysis underscores the relevance of ancient narratives in a holistic understanding of psychopathology. Ultimately, Persephone’s story exemplifies the human capacity to endure darkness and emerge with insight and strength.

This article weaves a common thread through Persian carpets and dreaming by describing how both manage to tell a story through their unique patterns; have a sense of numinosity; link the personal with the collective and our ancestors; bring us back in contact with nature; and help us get closer to the Other. Through this rapprochement, I bring into focus my own specific neo-Jungian form of active imagination practiced in groups, which is called the “Dream-Weaving” (DW) method. Moreover, through a vignette from a Dream-Weaving session with a group of students in training, this article demonstrates the valuable insights the students gained about their relational patterns and perceptions about the experience of teaching they were immersed in.

This article investigates self-objectification in the context of the maiden and seductress archetypes and finds that, in response to a patriarchal culture, girls sacrifice their authentic agency and desires to attain power and desirability through the male gaze, leading them to embody the seductress’s shadow side, which seeks power rather than union. Explored through my journey as a sex worker and my efforts to better understand my experience, I share with readers a story of loss and reclamation. Through the examination of my personal experience, I relate trends in my own life to those of adolescent females’ developing sense of self and the influence of American culture on the female psyche. One such influence is self-objectification, which this article explores through the lens of Jungian psychology, focusing on cultural context and archetypal influences.

This paper explores the experience of receiving a fatal medical diagnosis. It is meant to shed light on a phenomenon that, for obvious reasons, rarely gets reported on. The narrative takes one through the business of navigating a flawed medical system in search of an accurate diagnosis—and finally accepting that one’s condition is dire and untreatable. It is about bumping up against this wall of our own mortality and the emotions that are aroused. It is also about a novel psychic space that perhaps may open up for some who are dying—one that transcends the ego’s necessarily narrow perspective and evokes wider feeling of awe and grandeur.
