Abstract A compendium of metrical information entitled Caesurae uersuum has come down to us in five codices. Since the text is attributed to Boniface in only one of the witnesses, previous scholarship has questioned his authorship. The present article offers new evidence supporting the authorship of Boniface for the Caesurae uersuum: an analysis of the contents and of the paleographical features of the codices that preserve the work shows that the Caesurae uersuum survives in Continental textbooks with an Insular connection. Given that Boniface was a teacher in England before beginning his missionary career in the Continent, this essay suggests that the Caesurae uersuum was composed by Boniface for his English students and later used as didactic material in Carolingian scriptoria under Anglo-Saxon influence.

Abstract Until now, the only known evidence of the twelfth-century prose translation of St Bernard’s Sermones super Cantica was the manuscript Nantes, Musée Dobrée, 5. This collection contains the text of sermons 1 to 44, which might suggest that the translation was incomplete. The sale of two fragments containing parts of sermon 77 has changed our knowledge of this text and its circulation. This article examines these brief fragments, in an attempt to demonstrate that the translation of the Bernard’s text was originally complete.

The text of Ratherius of Verona’s main work, the Praeloquia, is based on a single manuscript, Valenciennes, Bibliothèque Municipale, 843, copied at Lobbes shortly after the author’s death. Today, the discovery of a florilegium from Rheinau (ms. Zürich, Zentralbibliothek, Rh. 121), entirely derived from the reading of the complex Ratherian work, allows a thorough re-examination of the text as well as a rethinking of the reception and transmission of the work. In particular, the new witness is not a descriptus of the only preserved manuscript; it documents a recension of the Ratherian text that is different in some points and probably older than the one we know. Moreover, in the witness that arrived in Rheinau, the Praeloquia were most likely accompanied by the Ratherian letter ad Petrum Veneticum, whose authorship is no longer disputable. Finally, the general character of the florilegium and the addition of a short section taken from a commentary on Sallust after the Ratherian text lead to the hypothesis that the Praeloquia may have been used in Rheinau for teaching.

Abstract John Zonaras’ Epitome historiarum is an important historiographical work from the early twelfth century: the part treating Roman history covers nearly 2000 years, from the arrival of Aeneas in Italy to the reign of the Komnenos dynasty. Often used as a witness for the editions of Plutarch or Cassius Dio, which it abridges, the Epitome is beginning to be considered as a work in itself, but there is no complete modern edition. Based on previous scholarly work and on the collation of 25 manuscripts (12th-16th century), this article focuses on books VII-IX of the Epitome in order to propose a classification and to establish a complete stemma in preparation for a more precise edition.

The article treats the alleged Commendatio operis ad Vrbanum papam II, with which Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury († 1109), dedicated one of his treatises to the pope. Whereas the Commendatio is incontestably a preamble, it identifies its parent text only as “subditum opusculum”. The question that the article seeks to answer is what was the “appended work”. According to the current vulgate, the Commendatio belongs to the Cur Deus homo, the longest treatise by Anselm. A reevaluation of the proofs, permitted by the emergence of several new witnesses, suggests that the Commendatio was related rather to the Epistola de incarnatione Verbi, such as it is presented in the Patrologia Latina and in early editions. In other words, Anselm never dedicated his Cur Deus homo to the pope. It is proposed that Anselm wrote the Commendatio when preparing for the Council of Bari in October 1098. The article includes a new critical edition established on the twenty-three known witnesses, of which some had formerly been overlooked.

The article offers the first critical edition of an epitome of the treatise Περὶ πνευμάτων by Trypho of Alexandria, grammarian living in the second half of the first century BCE. The importance of this epitome (already mentioned by P. Egenolff, Die orthoepischen Stücke der byzantinischen Litteratur, Leipzig, 1887, p. 26-27) can now be reconsidered in light of a new Parisinus manuscript witness that transmits the epitome in a more authentic version than the one known hitherto (and which is the fruit of an interpolation). The text contains interesting novelties concerning the doctrine of breathing developed by Trypho, and also yields two unpublished fragments of ancient authors, one of which is probably by Alexander Aetolus, and the other by the grammarian Tyrannion. The Appendix gives the edition of another unknown Περὶ πνευμάτων containing a new fragment by the grammarian Aristocles.

During his stay in Crete, Michael Apostoles composed a massive collection of roughly 1800 proverbs gleaned from previous collections, excerpta from various authors, and proverbs invented by himself. This work, known by the name Ionia, and is preserved in eleven manuscripts copied in Crete, three by Apostoles himself and eight by his collaborators. Each autograph manuscript has a different dedicatee and a different number of proverbs, which led von Leutsch and Di Lello-Finuoli - the only scholars who studied the manuscript tradition - to assume the existence of two or three different versions of the text. However, their reconstruction is unsatisfactory and relies on a partial study of the manuscript tradition. The aim of this article is to fill this gap. In the first part each witness is described, with a particular focus on the palaeographical, codicological and historical data that links it to Michael Apostoles and Crete. The second part presents the results of our collation of the manuscripts in order to reconstruct the evolution of the text. Five redactional stages are identified, among which the earliest is unveiled for the first time, because it is preserved in four manuscripts that were never previously collated (Ambr. D 19 sup., Ambr. L 43 sup., Berg. MA 339 and Scorial. Χ.IV.10).

This article examines for the first time a pamphlet by Giorgio Valla transmitted by the manuscript BNF, Paris. lat. 7552 (Georgii Vallae Placentini De syllabarum dignoscenda quantitate libellus), which has been neglected by scholars until now. The study demonstrates that the manuscript belonged to a Genoese student of Valla’s, the future bishop and apostolic governor, Lorenzo Fieschi. This school book had been written by Giorgio Valla when he held the chair of rhetoric in Pavia (1466-1476) and was used as a preparatory text for teaching his disciplines. This same work would be reused almost literally some twenty years later in the section of the De poetica entitled De expetendis et fugiendis rebus concerning syllabic quantity (book XXXVIII, chapters ix-xxxviii). This reuse of material that had already been published is a practice generally adopted by Giorgio Valla in compiling his monumental encyclopedia.
