From its start, the SKASE Journal of Translation and Interpretation has been a Diamond Open Access journal. This means that neither the readers nor the authors pay for its services. As a consequence, we cannot afford fees for reviewers or payments to the editors for the services to the journal. We are grateful to our universities for their support. The Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice hosts the journal website as well as the email address and offers technical support. The University of Innsbruck pays for a student assistant giving editorial support. In addition, the Slovak Association for the Study of English provides the funding for assigning a doi to each article published in our journal.

Ambiguity is one of the main characteristics of Shakespeare’s style, and his portrayal of the figure of the monarchs in his tetralogy is a prime example of such a feature. This article delves into the biblical imagery and rhetorical strategies employed by Henry Bolingbroke (later King Henry IV) in Richard II. It examines how Shakespeare’s portrayal of Bolingbroke’s rhetoric draws on scriptural notions of divine right, power and morality, particularly in the context of his ascent to the throne. Through a contrastive analysis of Bolingbroke’s speeches in Spanish translations, the article explores the translators’ treatment of his rhetorical manipulation of scriptural language, shedding light on the interplay between religious intertextuality and cultural adaptation.

This work discusses the translation solutions applied to the localization of video game titles in the Chinese market and how they are influenced by cultural, political, media, and consumer factors. It starts with an introductory contextualization of the unique features of the translation of video game titles in China through history, then examines the translation solutions adopted in the case of the most widely accepted versions of top-rated video games in the Chinese target market, revealing that literal, meaning-preserving approaches have become predominant over time, surpassing semantic-altering methods. Nevertheless, various types of modifications have been observed in the translation of video game titles due to linguistic and cultural differences. Even mistranslations are officially adopted as long as they have gained widespread recognition. In the future, video games imported into the Chinese market may receive a unified Chinese title for both distribution platforms and social media, prompting further research. This article investigates the translation of religious expressions in the context of everyday interactions in Jordanian Arabic (JA) where they remarkably serve as discourse markers. Expressions of this nature are required to be pragmatically translated, given the fact that their semantic content is largely peripheral to the meaning of the accompanying utterance. Using relevance theory, this article provides evidence that these expressions have procedural meanings, as their intended meanings are significantly derived from the context. In order to corroborate this finding, the current study involved the participation of fifty graduate students majoring in Applied English at the University of Jordan. A translation task of fifty utterances and exchanges was used to collect the data. Five of the most popular religious expressions in JA were employed. Each of these expressions was used eight times in context-rich exchanges representing four different pragmatic functions and twice in de-contextualized utterances. The findings demonstrate that when these expressions are taken out of context, translations are mostly literal or dependent on the translator’s arbitrary guesses of the intended meaning. On the other hand, when context was given, translators avoided literal translations and produced renditions that matched the pragmatic functions which these expressions convey in the various contexts.
