ABSTRACTDavid Livingstone travelled in central Africa from the early 1850s until his death in 1873. His call for others to continue his work has inspired missionaries since then. Our paper explores this aspect of Livingstone's legacy through interviews with Church of Scotland missionaries who lived and worked in Northern Rhodesia/Zambia from the 1950s to the 1970s. The interviews reveal that Livingstone was remembered in both overt and subtle ways. We argue that his career provided both temporal and geographical markers from which our interviewees assessed their own work and experiences a century later. Recalling Livingstone's life provided historical and geographical meaning for our interviewees as they worked in those same spaces that Livingstone did. The paper also discusses the changes to missionary life in the 1960s, when Zambia achieved independence.

David Livingstone's Manyema Diary suffered nearly as much as the Doctor himself during years of trekking across Africa. Today the diary is in a perilous state and remains inaccessible to the public...

Widening awareness of geodiversity involves widening access to data on the topic, presented in formats usable by non-specialists. Although there has been a trend for governmental agencies, research organizations and other institutions to make their data freely available, the interfaces for working with these data are usually geared to the specialist user, creating a digital divide. We present the use of geobrowsers (simple, usually free, Geographical Information Systems applications) as a means of delivering spatially-attributed data relating to geodiversity in a familiar interface, while retaining the links to the original specialist databases.

In the last decade or so, the concept of ‘geodiversity’ has provided a focus for activity linking the physical environment, people and their cultures (Gray 2004, 2008). While there has been a stron...

Raised in Scotland, married and divorced in the English south, an adopted Slovene, Fanny Copeland (1872–1970) occupied the intersection of a number of complex spatial and temporal conjunctures. A Slavophile, she played a part in the formation of what subsequently became the Kingdom of Yugoslavia that emerged from the First World War. Living in Ljubljana, she facilitated the first ‘foreign visit’ (in 1932) of the newly formed Le Play Society (precursor of the Institute of British Geographers) and guided its studies of Solčava (a then ‘remote’ Alpine valley system) which, led by Dudley Stamp and commended by Halford Mackinder, were subsequently hailed as a model for regional studies elsewhere. Arrested by the Gestapo and interned in Italy during the Second World War, she eventually returned to a socialist Yugoslavia, a celebrated figure. An accomplished musician, linguist, and mountaineer, she became an authority on (and populist for) the Julian Alps and was instrumental in the establishment of the Triglav National Park. Copeland's role as participant observer (and protagonist) enriches our understanding of the particularities of her time and place and illuminates some inter-war relationships within Geography, inside and outside the academy, suggesting their relative autonomy in the production of geographical knowledge.

Archaeologists have long been fascinated by the artificial islands, often known as crannogs, in Scotland's lochs. The tendency has been to regard them as a discrete phenomenon and to focus on their role as prehistoric and early historic settlements. However, chorographic material, much of it closely linked to Timothy Pont's survey of Scotland, shows they were still in relatively widespread use, and performing a variety of functions, during the late 16th century. It also raises questions – certainly for the late medieval and early modern periods – about whether they should be seen as part of a broader phenomenon of loch settlements on artificial, modified and natural islands.
