exceptional polynomials Research Articles (Page 1)

The paper presents the united analysis of the finite exceptional orthogonal polynomial (EOP) sequences composed of rational Darboux transforms of Romanovski-Jacobi polynomials. It is shown that there are four distinguished exceptional differential polynomial systems (X-Jacobi DPSs) of series J1, J2, J3, and W. The first three X-DPSs formed by pseudo-Wronskians of two Jacobi polynomials contain both exceptional orthogonal polynomial systems (X-Jacobi OPSs) on the interval (−1, +1) and the finite EOP sequences on the positive interval (1, ∞). On the contrary, the X-DPS of series W formed by Wronskians of two Jacobi polynomials contains only (infinitely many) finite EOP sequences on the interval (1, ∞). In addition, the paper rigorously examines the three isospectral families of the associated Liouville potentials (rationally extended hyperbolic Pöschl-Teller potentials of types a, b, and a′) exactly quantized by the EOPs in question.

This paper exploits two remarkable features of the translationally form-invariant (TFI) canonical Sturm–Liouville equation (CSLE) transfigured by Liouville transformation into the Schrödinger equation with the shape-invariant Gendenshtein (Scarf II) potential. First, the Darboux–Crum net of rationally extended Gendenshtein potentials can be specified by a single series of Maya diagrams. Second, the exponent differences for the poles of the CSLE in the finite plane are energy-independent. The cornerstone of the presented analysis is the reformulation of the conventional supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanics of exactly solvable rational potentials in terms of ‘generalized Darboux transformations’ of canonical Sturm–Liouville equations introduced by Rudyak and Zakhariev at the end of the last century. It has been proven by the author that the first feature assures that all the eigenfunctions of the TFI CSLE are expressible in terms of Wronskians of seed solutions of the same type, while the second feature makes it possible to represent each of the mentioned Wronskians as a weighted Wronskian of Routh polynomials. It is shown that the numerators of the polynomial fractions in question form the exceptional orthogonal polynomial (EOP) sequences composed of Wronskian transforms of the given finite set of Romanovski–Routh polynomials excluding their juxtaposed pairs, which have already been used as seed polynomials.

The supersymmetric WKB (SWKB) condition is supposed to be exact for all known exactly solvable quantum mechanical systems with the shape invariance. Recently, it was claimed that the SWKB condition was not exact for the extended radial oscillator, whose eigenfunctions consisted of the exceptional orthogonal polynomial, even the system possesses the shape invariance. In this paper, we examine the SWKB condition for the two novel classes of exactly solvable systems: one has the multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials as the main parts of the eigenfunctions, and the other has the Krein–Adler Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. For all of them, one can always remove the [Formula: see text]-dependency from the condition, and it is satisfied with a certain degree of accuracy.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to present the construction of exceptional Laguerre polynomials in a systematic way and to provide new asymptotic results on the location of the zeros. To describe the exceptional Laguerre polynomials, we associate them with two partitions. We find that the use of partitions is an elegant way to express these polynomials and we restate some of their known properties in terms of partitions. We discuss the asymptotic behavior of the regular zeros and the exceptional zeros of exceptional Laguerre polynomials as the degree tends to infinity.

We classify complete permutation monomials of degree qn−1q−1+1 over the finite field with qn elements in odd characteristic, for n+1 a prime and (n+1)4<q. As a corollary, a conjecture by Wu, Li, Helleseth, and Zhang is proven in odd characteristic. When n+1 is a power of the characteristic we provide some new examples. Indecomposable exceptional polynomials of degree 8 and 9 are also classified.

A classic result of Ritt describes polynomials invertible in radicals: they are compositions of power polynomials, Chebyshev polynomials and polynomials of degree at most 4. In this paper we prove that a polynomial invertible in radicals and solutions of equations of degree at most k is a composition of power polynomials, Chebyshev polynomials, polynomials of degree at most k and, if $$k\le 14$$ , certain polynomials with exceptional monodromy groups. A description of these exceptional polynomials is given. The proofs rely on classification of monodromy groups of primitive polynomials obtained by Müller based on group-theoretical results of Feit and on previous work on primitive polynomials with exceptional monodromy groups by many authors.

Many algebraic transformations of the hypergeometric equation σ(x)z"(x) + τ(x)z'(x) + lz(x) = 0, where σ, τ, l are polynomial functions of degrees 2 (at most), 1, 0, respectively, are well known. Some of them involve x = x(t), a polynomial of degree r, in order to recover the Heun equation, extension of the hypergeometric equation by one more singularity. The case r = 2 was investigated by K. Kuiken (see 1979 SIAM J. Math. Anal. 10 (3) 655-657) and extended to r = 3,4, 5 by R. S. Maier (see 2005 J. Differ. Equat. 213 171 - 203). The transformations engendered by the function y(x) = A(x)z(x), also very popular in mathematics and physics, are used to get from the hypergeometric equation, for instance, the Schroedinger equation with appropriate potentials, as well as Heun and confluent Heun equations. This work addresses a generalization of Kimura's approach proposed in 1971, based on differential transformations of the hypergeometric equations involving y(x) = A(x)z(x) + B(x)z'(x). Appropriate choices of A(x) and B(x) permit to retrieve the Heun equations as well as equations for some exceptional polynomials. New relations are obtained for Laguerre and Hermite polynomials.

We prove that every rational extension of the quantum harmonic oscillator that is exactly solvable by polynomials is monodromy free, and therefore can be obtained by applying a finite number of state-deleting Darboux transformations on the harmonic oscillator. Equivalently, every exceptional orthogonal polynomial system of Hermite type can be obtained by applying a Darboux–Crum transformation to the classical Hermite polynomials. Exceptional Hermite polynomial systems only exist for even codimension 2 m, and they are indexed by the partitions λ of m. We provide explicit expressions for their corresponding orthogonality weights and differential operators and a separate proof of their completeness. Exceptional Hermite polynomials satisfy a 2ℓ + 3 recurrence relation where ℓ is the length of the partition λ. Explicit expressions for such recurrence relations are given.

A simple derivation is presented of the four families of infinitely many shape-invariant Hamiltonians corresponding to the exceptional Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. The Darboux–Crum transformations are applied to connect the well-known shape-invariant Hamiltonians of the radial oscillator and the Darboux–Pöschl–Teller potential to the shape-invariant potentials of Odake–Sasaki. Dutta and Roy derived the two lowest members of the exceptional Laguerre polynomials by this method. The method is expanded to its full generality and many other ramifications, including the aspects of the generalized Bochner problem and the bispectral property of the exceptional orthogonal polynomials, are discussed.

A conjecture of Carlitz on permutation polynomials is as follow: Given an even positive integer n, there is a constant Cn, such that if Fq is a finite field of odd order q with q > Cn, then there are no permutation polynomials of degree n over Fq. The conjecture is a well-known problem in this area. It is easily proved if n is a power of 2. The only other cases in which solutions have been published are n = 6 (Dickson [5]) and n = 10 (Hayes [7]); see Lidl [11], Lausch and Nobauer [9], and Lidl and Niederreiter [10] for remarks on this problem. In this paper, we prove that the Carlitz conjecture is true if n = 12 or n = 14, and give an equivalent version of the conjecture in terms of exceptional polynomials.
