Background:Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous multisystem disease of uncertain aetiology. The disease has major inflammatory and immune components; however, the immunopathogenesis is not well understood. Micro ribonucleic acids (microRNAs or miRNAs) are classes of miniature, single-stranded, non-coding RNAs. Their key recognised role includes mediating the silencing of target genes post-transcriptionally. Recently, the role of miRNAs has gained interest in numerous disorders, suggested as being involved in the pathogenesis of those diseases and acting as disease markers. Very little is known about the role of miRNAs in sarcoidosis, with nothing known regarding miRNAs in South African patients, this needs evaluation. The main objective of this research, therefore, was to investigate the serum expression of approximately 800 miRNAs in patients with sarcoidosis compared with race-, age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Methods:A total of six patients and six matched controls participated in this study. Whole blood samples were collected in EDTA tubes, processed and the plasma retained. RNA was extracted from the stored plasma samples using the QIAGEN miRNeasy Mini Kit® and concentrated using a salt-ethanol precipitation. The extracted miRNA was profiled using an nCounter® miRNA human v3 expression assay and data analysed using the nSolver™ Analysis Software. Results:After excluding one sample/control pair because of cellular RNA contamination, the remaining five patient and five matched control samples were analysed, and 145 miRNAs were found to be potentially differentially expressed. On applying a Bonferroni correction, the only miRNA that was significantly different was miRNA let-7a-5p, which was significantly overexpressed (141-fold change; p<0.0003) in patients compared with controls. Conclusion:This is the first miRNA report of differentially expressed miRNAs in the serum of patients with sarcoidosis and matched healthy controls in South Africa. The results obtained suggest that miRNAs may play a role in sarcoidosis pathogenesis. Whether these molecules have diagnostic or prognostic implications, needs the performance of these tests in future studies recruiting larger patient cohorts.

BackgroundEconomic burden estimates are essential to guide policy‐making for influenza vaccination, especially in resource‐limited settings.MethodsWe estimated the cost, absenteeism, and years of life lost (YLL) of medically and non‐medically attended influenza‐associated mild and severe respiratory, circulatory and non‐respiratory/non‐circulatory illness in South Africa during 2013‐2015 using a modified version of the World Health Organization (WHO) worksheet based tool for estimating the economic burden of seasonal influenza. Additionally, we restricted the analysis to influenza‐associated severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) and influenza‐like illness (ILI; subsets of all‐respiratory illnesses) as suggested in the WHO manual.ResultsThe estimated mean annual cost of influenza‐associated illness was $270.5 million, of which $111.3 million (41%) were government‐incurred costs, 40.7 million (15%) were out‐of‐pocket expenses, and $118.4 million (44%) were indirect costs. The cost of influenza‐associated medically attended mild illness ($107.9 million) was 2.3 times higher than that of severe illness ($47.1 million). Influenza‐associated respiratory illness costs ($251.4 million) accounted for 93% of the total cost. Estimated absenteeism and YLL were 13.2 million days and 304 867 years, respectively. Among patients with influenza‐associated WHO‐defined ILI or SARI, the costs ($95.3 million), absenteeism (4.5 million days), and YLL (65 697) were 35%, 34%, and 21% of the total economic and health burden of influenza.ConclusionThe economic burden of influenza‐associated illness was substantial from both a government and a societal perspective. Models that limit estimates to those obtained from patients with WHO‐defined ILI or SARI substantially underestimated the total economic and health burden of influenza‐associated illness.

Quality of the components in the mechanical engineering is of the utmost importance. Most of quality control procedures can be provided by advanced quality assurance methods that enable visualization of inner structure of a component within all of the occurring defects. This paper suggests an innovative post-processing technique for Full-Matrix ultrasonic imaging with Matrix phased arrays in the case of immersion testing. Evaluation of the reliability was performed by simulation via CIVA software as well as by experimental testing of a real component with given defects. The obtained results of the research demonstrated high sensitivity and accuracy of the suggested technique.

The rhob-velocity-effective stress (Rho-V-e) method produces a model-driven, stand-alone set of “virtual” rock properties, which at intermediate positions are consistent with Bowers (2001) method default values for the Gulf of Mexico. The RhoVe method uses a single transform to convert both compressional sonic and bulk density to common estimates of effective stress and pore pressure where convergence of the two transformed properties offers a robust solution. Velocity-density conversion functions are mathematically linked to a continuous series of velocity-depth normal compaction trend functions. The calculations are limited by bounding end-member curves that provide a basis for intermediate (fractional) solutions of velocity-effective stress and density-effective stress relationships that are applied to a well of interest. By using the comparative velocity-density functions that match the offset well data in cross-plot, normal effective stress for each end-member and intermediate solutions can be calculated by integrating the discrete velocity-depth profile - now converted to density-depth. The method produces robust solutions as tested on multiple deep water Gulf of Mexico wells, and extends the predictability of high-velocity, low-effective stress rock types such as those found in the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico Wilcox-equivalent Paleogene and older section.

A lot has changed since I published my last comment on the American Chemical Society’s Science & Human Rights program (C&EN, Oct. 13, 2014, page 30). The global political landscape has been unsettled by attempted coups and recent elections, and security is understandably on the minds of many world leaders. These issues, coupled with misinformation shared through social media, contribute to growing threats to scientific mobility and have an impact on rights, discovery, and the practice of chemistry. Therefore, upholding human rights is more important than ever. Learned societies such as ACS are uniquely positioned to help assure chemists, chemical engineers, and other professionals that their rights are maintained. As a science-driven organization, ACS is able to bea leader in matters of transnational importance, such as health care, higher education, and the environment. The ACS Science & Human Rights program, with its long-standing reputation, is well suited to address these

This study aims at securing technology to develop a multisensor and complex position-tracking Zigbee node module for USN (ubiquitous sensor network). In a concrete way, it aims at developing military (invader detection module and system) and industrial (transformer-tracking and thermo-measurement module and system) Zigbee telecommunication node module, and developing wireless monitoring and tracking technology based on such modules. In addition, it aims at building up the foundation of interface test for various sensors (thermo sensors, pressure sensors, vibration sensors and vision sensors) and the foundation of a comprehensive interlocking device to which GIS (Geographic Information System) and GPS (Global Positioning System) were applied, for industrial devices are mostly installed in mountains. Moreover, it aims at developing a roaming-type variable Zigbee node module to the end that it stands against unfavorable conditions (extreme temperatures, dust, winds, electromagnetism, noise, etc.). In case such aims are achieved, Zigbee communications will not be limited to normal and stable conditions (home networks, building automation, etc.) but will be applied to the industrial field under noises and unfavorable conditions. In such a case, the application of Zigbee node modules is expected to be unlimited.
