We demonstrate dual junction (Al)GaInP/GaAs solar cells that are designed to operate at 400°C and 1000X concentration in a hybrid photovoltaic-solar thermal concentrator system. The cells have a front metallization and anti-reflection coating that are stable under 400°C operation. We show how the cell performance degrades with increasing aluminum compositions in the top cell. Our best cell is a GaInP/GaAs tandem that demonstrated 15±1% efficiency at 400°C over a concentration range of 300-1000 suns, with several pathways to improved performance.

Almost all enterprise class 1U servers utilize active air cooling to maintain component temperatures. Despite a trend toward more efficient server components, the use of active cooling is still prevalent. Since the fans are a significant contributor to the power draw as well as the heat load, it is important to be able to optimize in situ fan performance. Typically, an enterprise class 1U enclosure will be cooled by a number of fans arranged in parallel. In such installations, the use of fan curves from flow bench tests and 1-D flow impedance models are typically not sufficient to accurately predict the fan power draw, local flow distribution or even the net air flow through the enclosure. This is primarily due to installation-driven fan performance degradation. In this paper, installation effects in a typical 1U enclosure are experimentally investigated and quantified. In addition, mitigation strategies for reducing the impact of installation effects within the original fan tray space claim are presented. Employing these strategies, an optimized fan installation that measurably reduces server power requirements is demonstrated.

In multiple object tracking, accurate detection for each of objects that appear sequentially and effective tracking in complicated cases that they are overlapped with each other are very important. In this paper, we propose a multiple object tracking system that has a concrete detection and tracking characteristics by using multi-lateral histogram and SIFT feature extraction algorithm. Especially, by limiting the matching area to object's inside and by utilizing the location informations in the keypoint matching process of SIFT algorithm, we advanced the tracking performance for multiple objects. Based on the experimental results, we found that the proposed tracking system has a robust tracking operation in the complicated environments that multiple objects are frequently overlapped in various of directions.

In the present work surface thermometry using a method based on the spectroscopy of inorganic luminescent material has been applied in a full-size aircraft jet engine. The technique utilizes laser-induced emission from thermographic phosphors for, non-intrusive, remote temperature diagnostics in combustion applications with high sensitivity and accuracy. In the present application the laser-induced phosphorescence technique has proven its applicability even in the extremely harsh environment prevailing next to a jet engine operating at full load. The measurement object, Volvo RM12, is based on the General Electric F404 engine, from which it has been developed to meet single-engine operating criteria and achieve higher performance. A phosphor material having suitable temperature sensitivity in the expected temperature range was applied to the surface of interest on the flameholder of the engine afterburner. Phosphorescence radiation was generated using the forth harmonic (266 nm) from a pulsed Nd:YAG laser as an excitation source. The resulting signal was detected with a photo multiple tube (PMT). Phosphorescence lifetime decay curves were recorded at various load of the engine, including use of the afterburner. By analyzing the lifetime decay, the temperature data was acquired through implementation of a regression equation extracted from well-defined calibration measurements on the phosphor used.

Results of computing the aerodynamic stability limit for basic modes on supersonic turbines for LOX and LH2 turbo pumps in open cycles are presented and discussed. It is shown that it will be virtually impossible to design blades for supersonic turbines that satisfy the criterion that all modes be aerodynamically stable. An engineering approach based on total damping is subsequently suggested using a characteristic aerodynamic damping that can be used for modes that are aerodynamically unstable. <div class="htmlview paragraph">Renewed interest in a gas turbine as an alternative driveline for heavy trucks within Volvo, driven by the demands for lower emissions, resulted in a pre-study during 1990-1992 and the development and testing of a demonstrator engine between 1993 and 2000. To achieve the demanding goals for efficiency and emissions, the engine was designed as a recuperated and intercooled two shaft powerplant with a low-emission combustor.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">Following a comprehensive aerodynamic and concept study, engine components were rig tested and the engine mechanical design was finalized. Two engines were built and tested in a rig and in a truck. Very low exhaust emissions were demonstrated during rig testing, with NOx as low as 0,22 g/kWh in a 13-mode test. The efficiency goal of 42 % was not reached, but given more development time the measured efficiency of 38,6 % can most certainly be improved. Still, it will be the fuel consumption that is the major disadvantage compared to a diesel engine.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">The engine was also installed in a Volvo FH12 truck and tested for a limited time.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">The pros and cons of the gas turbines for trucks are discussed with some emphasis on emissions and fuel availability. Some areas where efforts must be made to improve the gas turbine are described and some suggestions of how to do it are given.</div>

*† ‡ § The laser welded channel wall technology is the outcome of a project with the objective to develop a cooled wall structure that meets commercial requirements 1,2,3,6 . The technology defined encompasses short development and production lead time and low production cost, which is achieved by using robust standard processes and commercially available raw material. The core process development, T-joint & seam tracker, has been performed in close collaboration with FORCE Technology, a Danish company with a high profile on welding, sensors and Non-Destructive-Testing (NDT). During the process development phase the tooling such as weld head, seam-tracker etc has been built in a modular fashion to allow for changes in the set-up as the development progresses. With the experience gained, both in manufacturing and testing, a new program has been formulated in order to further industrialize the processes, i.e. to comply with the quality assurance of a serial production. This also implies a strong development on NDT procedures to allow for automated inspection and digital storage of the results for traceability. There will also be additional process development, in line with the industrialization of the Sandwich Nozzle Technology.

The long lifetime requirements of interplanetary exploration missions is driving the need to develop long-life components for the electric propulsion thrusters that are being targeted for these missions. One of the primary life-limiting components of ion thrusters are the optics, which are continuously eroded during the operation of the thruster. Pyrolytic graphite optics are being considered for the High Power Electric Propulsion (HiPEP) ion thruster because of their very high resistance to erosion. This paper describes the structural analysis of the HiPEP pyrolytic graphite. A description of the development of the grid model, as well as the development of the effective properties and stress concentrations in the apertured area of the grids is included. An evaluation of the use of curved grids shows that the increased stiffness (compared to flat grids) prevents intergrid impact during launch, however, the residual stresses introduced by curving the grids pushes the resulting peak stresses beyond the critical stress. As a result, flat grids are recommended as the design solution. Thermally induced grid displacements during normal thruster operation are also presented.
