Developments in Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in Higher Education (HE) have sparked debates regarding its potential to enhance teaching, learning, and administrative processes while raising concerns about ethical, pedagogical, and institutional implications. This qualitative case study explored faculty perceptions of GenAI through three focus groups with 17 multidisciplinary faculty members, representing non-users (NU), low-engagement users (LEU), and users (U) of GenAI. Conducted as part of a larger mixed-methods study on GenAI adoption in HE, the study employed visual metaphors and projective techniques to elicit deep-seated attitudes and beliefs that may not surface through traditional research methods. Findings revealed a spectrum of perceptions, ranging from optimism about GenAI’s potential to enhance productivity and creativity to concerns regarding autonomy, cognitive overload, dehumanisation, and ethical dilemmas. The study stresses the need for institutional policies that support faculty GenAI literacy, ethical frameworks, and discipline-specific guidance. By leveraging qualitative insights into educators’ engagement with GenAI, this research provides evidence-based recommendations for its responsible adoption into HE.

Background/Objectives: The rapid evolution of bacterial resistance and the high cost of drug development have attributed greatly to the dearth in drug design. Computational approaches and natural product exploitation offer potential solutions to accelerate drug discovery. Methods: In this research article, we aimed to identify novel antibacterial hits. For the in silico studies, molecular scaffolds from the in-house chemical library of the Department of Pharmacy of Athens (Pharmalab) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) were screened and selected for further experimental procedures. Compounds from both libraries that were not previously screened for their antimicrobial properties were tested in vitro against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. The microdilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). Results: In silico screening identified twenty promising molecules from the NCI and seven from the Pharmalab databases. The unexplored compounds for their antibacterial activity can be characterized as weak strain-specific antimicrobials. The NSC 610491 and NSC 610493 were active against Staphylococcus aureus (MIC: 25 and 12.5 µg/mL, respectively) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) (MIC: 50 and 12.5 µg/mL, respectively). Six out of seven hydroxytyrosol (HTy) compounds were moderately active (MIC: 25-50 µg/mL) against S. aureus, MRSA and Enterococcus faecalis. For the Gram-negative bacteria, no activity was detected (≥100 µg/mL). Conclusions: The tested scaffolds could be considered as promising candidates for novel antimicrobials with improvements. Further experimentation is required to assess mechanisms of action and evaluate the efficacy and safety.

Abstract Contemporary scholars working in virtue epistemology profess to take inspiration and build on the ancient Greek conception of intellectual virtues. In this paper, I show that, despite their claim, contemporary models of intellectual virtue differ in notable ways from the ancient Greek account of the concept. I pinpoint two major differences between the ancient Greek conception of intellectual virtues and the contemporary understandings of the term. These amount to (a) what the term of intellectual virtues includes and (b) the location of the value of intellectual virtues. I argue that re‐examining the philosophical history of the concept of intellectual virtue can have significant positive implications for contemporary virtue epistemology. Indicatively, I show that it could lead to the development of theories that maintain that intellectual excellences are conducive to leading a good life because their activity is constitutive of the human good—instead of locating their value, as contemporary virtue epistemologists currently do, in the epistemic goods that they enable the agent to acquire and/or in the agent's epistemic motivations.

PurposeIn this research, we designed and implemented a unique vignette experiment to study the effect of managers' perceptions of institutional distance on foreign location choice, as well as the moderating effect of managerial international experience and preferred entry mode on this relationship.Design/methodology/approachWe employ an experimental vignette methodology (EVM) approach applied in the context of Chinese managers to test the causal relationships depicted in our hypotheses. In this way, we measure the decision-makers' perceptions ex ante, i.e. in conjunction with and prior to a decision about a foreign location choice.FindingsOur findings show that managers' ex-ante perceptions of institutional distance negatively affect decisions on foreign location choice. Also, we find that managerial international experience and preference for high commitment entry modes mitigate the negative effect of managers' perceptions of institutional distance on foreign location choice.Originality/valueThis research study adds to our understanding of the effect of managers' perceptions of institutional distance and managerial contingencies on foreign location decisions. Further, it advances novel experimental design in international business research in general and on foreign location choice in particular.

This article analyses the impact of North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) new strategic concept on its involvement in the Eastern Mediterranean and its implications for Greek-Turkish relations. We analyse the application of NATO’s new strategic concept in the Eastern Mediterranean by focusing on the case study of Greek-Turkish tensions and NATO’s role in de-escalation efforts. The case study of Greek-Turkish relations is vital for two reasons. Firstly, because of NATO’s renewed interest in the Eastern Mediterranean region, and secondly, because the complicated relationship between the two countries has the potential to disrupt NATO’s unity. The findings of this article suggest that while NATO’s intention is to adapt to evolving security challenges, its new strategic concept has done little to de-escalate the tensions between Greece and Türkiye. Despite the Alliance’s commitment to collective defence and conflict resolution, the longstanding disputes in the Eastern Mediterranean have persisted, often with increased intensity. In conclusion, NATO’s new strategic concept acknowledges the burgeoning complexities in the Eastern Mediterranean, yet falls markedly short of introducing effective measures to de-escalate the longstanding tensions between Greece and Türkiye. While the document perceptively addresses the need for heightened engagement in the Eastern Mediterranean and highlights the myriad security challenges, including territorial disputes, migration issues, and the competition for energy resources, it lacks a clear actionable framework for mitigating the discord between these two member states.

The concept of a smart city is aimed at enhancing the quality of life for urban residents, and logistic services are a crucial component of this effort. Despite this, the logistics industry has encountered issues due to the exponential growth of logistics volumes, as well as the complexity of processes and lack of transparency. Consequently, it is necessary to develop an efficient management system that offers traceability and condition monitoring capabilities to ensure the safe and high-quality delivery of goods. Moreover, it is crucial to guarantee the accuracy and dependability of distribution data. In this context, this paper proposes a blockchain-enabled IoT logistics system for the efficient tracking and management of high-price shipments. A smart contract based on blockchain technology has been designed for automatic approval and payment, with the aim of distributing shipping information exclusively among legitimate logistics parties. To ensure authentication, a zero-knowledge proof is used to conceal the blockchain address. Moreover, an intelligent parcel (iParcel) containing piezoresistive sensors is developed to pack delivered goods during the shipping process for violation detection such as severe falls or theft. The iParcels are automatically tracked and traced, and if a violation occurs, the contract is cancelled, and payment is refunded. The transaction fee per party is reasonable, particularly for high-price products that guarantee successful shipment.

ABSTRACT This study investigates the principles and the factors influencing interaction for resource integration during service mega-disruptions (SMDs) in the tourism ecosystem. Utilizing qualitative data from semi-structured interviews conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, this article reveals that interaction principles of willingness to exchange, access to information, dialogue, transparency, coordination, adaptation, and informed risk assessment lead to value co-creation (VCC). Failure to follow these principles leads to value no-creation (VNC) or value co-destruction (VCD). During SMDs, the most critical factors influencing interaction for resource integration are traveller’s safety needs, initiation of travel cancellation, sympathy, proactivity, omnichannel communication, the effectiveness of technology and employees as well as the number of involved actors. Forced indifference in VNC is uncovered, where firms’ constraints hinder their engagement despite tourists’ desire for interaction. This study contributes to the understanding of value dynamics during SMDs and calls for further exploration of multiple stakeholders’ perspectives in such contexts.
