Silicon Valley Clean Water (SVCW) provides wastewater treatment for over 220,000 users in the San Francisco mid-peninsula area. The treatment plant, established in the 1970s, faced significant challenges due to an aging piping system. Particularly, the plant’s sludge under their digester and secondary clarifier started showing signs of corrosion, exacerbated by their location near the saline San Francisco Bay. To address this issue, SVCW explored several rehabilitation options, ultimately identifying spray-in-place pipe (SIPP) lining and cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) as the most practical and cost-effective solutions. Despite severe corrosion, varying pipe diameters, difficult access, and tight schedules, the project team successfully implemented SIPP rehabilitation. This accomplishment highlights the importance of innovative thinking, skilled craftsmanship, and teamwork in resolving complex infrastructure challenges.

Finding employment is extremely challenging for returning citizens – formerly incarcerated individuals – as they face additional barriers due to their criminal records, gaps in employment, and limited experience with digital technology. Using design studio workshops and focus groups, we explored how returning citizens in the United States experience digital job search and how digital platforms and job search tools could be improved. We find that returning citizens are uncertain about when and how to disclose their felony status, and develop unique tactics in response. When faced with concerns about employment discrimination, especially racism, returning citizens maintained a practical outlook. And, participants expressed specific features they sought in technology platforms for job search: clear, simple job descriptions; auto-fill for commonly occurring input fields; and options for human assistance. Throughout, we pay special attention to Black/African American returning citizens, who have historically been discriminated by the criminal justice system in the United States.

While the numbers of oral maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) residents increased over time, women and residents from underrepresented minority backgrounds are still underrepresented. The objectives were to assess dental students' OMFS-related personal and educational experiences and attitudes and explore which factors correlate with their interest in future OMFS careers. Data were collected from 493 dental students in 1 dental school and 206 students from 15 other US and Canadian dental schools. The students in the national sample were more likely to have experienced an OMFS procedure themselves (64.6%vs. 50.7%; P=0.001), have shadowed an OMFS in an operating room (23.2%vs. 14.9%; P=0.009) prior to coming to dental school and to be much/very much interested in an OMFS career (36.4%vs. 12%; P<0.001) than the students at the home school. While the majority of both groups rated their experiences with rotations in the OMFS department in the dental school (68%vs. 62.5%) and in the hospital (80.3%vs. 85.7%) as very interesting, the students in the national sample were more likely to agree/strongly agree that they were satisfied with their OMFS experiences (68.1%vs. 36.3%; P<0.001) and had learned a lot from the OMFS faculty (57.9%vs. 30.8%) than the students in the home school. For both groups, the degree of interest in an OMFS career correlated with having had more personal OMFS experiences (home: r=0.28; P<0.001/other: r=0.39; P<0.001), more interesting OMFS experiences in the dental school (r=0.23; P<0.05/r=0.40; P<0.001) and the hospital (0.33; P<0.05/r=0.50; P<0.001) and more positive attitudes toward OMFS faculty (r=0.26; P<0.001/r=0.37; P<0.001). Positive personal and educational OMFS experiences and positive attitudes toward OMFS faculty were associated with an interest in OMFS careers. These findings provide a basis for developing educational interventions aimed at increasing the percentage of women and residents from URM backgrounds in OMFS programs.

Public policy is at the heart of US congressional investigations, where private corporations can confront a unique set of rules and mores—in a very public forum, often covered in the news and televised. This article traces the historical precedents to congressional inquiries, highlighting cases such as the ‘Teapot Dome’ scandal and the ensuing US Supreme Court case, McGrain v. Daugherty, confirming the Legislative Branch's independent investigative authority to compel a witness to testify and produce documents. The article explains the two types of congressional investigations, oversight and legislative, and how their differences could impact the corporations involved. It reviews recent examples of investigations, illuminating how a corporation's public relations and legal rights can both overlap and point to differing interests. Based upon first‐hand experience, the author provides a legal perspective in explaining the investigation procedures, the legal limits to congressional authority, and the steps taken to prepare a witness for testimony. Finally, the author explains how readiness for congressional inquiries is an integral aspect of prudent risk management for any major corporation. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Mentoring programs are enjoying a renewed interest as corporations grapple with how to collect and disseminate their collective knowledge across functions and regions in an effort to rapidly innovate and maintain competitive advantage. Global mentoring programs can help support training and development programs by matching mentors and protégés from different cultures, encouraging information exchange and connection with employees from other regions. Issues discussed here include time dimensions, languages, cultural biases, program perceptions, training costs and administration.

This study investigated the hypothesis that excessive physical comfort adversely affects mood states generally associated with superior mental performance. This hypothesis was explored in an experiment on office chairs. Eleven subjects evaluated three chair designs varying in comfort for eight hours on three separate days. The subjects performed a word processing task from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Comfort and discomfort were evaluated using the Shackel Scale and the Corlett Scale. Mood states were evaluated using a mood profile survey. The results suggested that the most comfortable chair induced mental mood states such as boredom, tiredness, sluggishness, (lack of) alertness and (less) energetic feeling which are generally associated with lower mental performance. It is suggested that for knowledge workers, comfort and performance may follow an inverted-U relationship. Too little or too much comfort may be detrimental to both physical and mental performance. This moderation on the view of comfort has considerable implications for the design of the modern workplace, particularly for office furniture. Its relevance to the sedentary work-styles prevalent in the United States is also discussed.

The cost-effective application of optical communications components requires that the product characterization measurements also predict the actual performance of the component in-situ, particularly for fundamental attributes such as attenuation. In this work, attenuation characteristics of individual components by several measurement methods were compared to the observed power reduction (loss) over a range of complexities of a practical LAN link topology for the ANSI X3T9.5 Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI). The results clearly indicate the need to use quasi-steady-state measurement methods for LAN components, even when the total link length is less than 100 meters.
