ABSTRACT Objectives In recreational fisheries, the choices individual anglers make have the potential to influence the success of management strategies, emphasizing the need to understand factors that drive angler behavior. Striped Bass Morone saxatilis are one of the most popular recreationally targeted fish species on the Atlantic coast of North America, particularly in the Northeast, making understanding angler practices and perceptions of the fishery essential for effective management. Methods Using an online nonprobabilistic survey, we surveyed Striped Bass saltwater anglers, investigating perceptions regarding catch-and-release best practices, angling quality, threats to the stocks, the need for management actions, and angler support for contemporary regulations. Results Anglers reported high voluntary release rates in the fishery, a general understanding of the potential effects angler behaviors can have on the fate of released fish, and awareness of strategies to mitigate negative effects. Perceptions of fishing quality mirrored population assessment data on Striped Bass stocks. Respondents highlighted pressures from the commercial fishery and the loss of juvenile habitats as perceived threats to the population. They expressed strong support for management regulations and various conservation strategies, including adoption of best practices for catch and release and increased scientific research. Despite broad consensus among respondents, attitudes varied with gear preference, with fly anglers demonstrating stronger conservation-oriented views than anglers using conventional tackle. Conclusions Insights gained from this survey reveal some gaps between angler perceptions and scientific evidence but also alignment between management goals and angler beliefs. Collectively, the insights can help shape education and outreach programs, as well as act as important reference points for Striped Bass management and conservation.

The youth mental health crisis is reaching epidemic proportions, stemming from both single and complex traumatic experiences. Because children and adolescents spend a considerable amount of time in schools, educational settings present both opportunities for and threats to youth mental health. This article outlines how the principles of equity-centered trauma-informed education can be applied in educational environments to enhance the mental health of students. The authors discuss policy recommendations aimed at prioritizing predictability, flexibility, empowerment, connection, and unconditional positive regard. Effectively implementing these policies can help protect young people from structural sources of trauma in the educational system and ensure that schools do not become additional sources of trauma for youths in the United States.

Clemmys guttata (Spotted Turtle) is a widespread species of regional conservation concern throughout the eastern United States and Canada, relying upon mosaics of upland and wetland habitats. Spotted Turtles exhibit late maturity and low annual reproductive potential; as a result, many populations are vulnerable to decline and reduced connectivity due to elevated rates of anthropogenic disturbance and mortality. We assessed 3 Spotted Turtle populations that were initially studied between 1989 and 1995 on patchworks of private and public (watershed and state forest) land using mark–recapture methods and a combination of open- and closed-population models. During the initial studies, the 3 populations were estimated to support 98, 18, and 43 turtles, respectively. Our population models for the same sites during 2018 or 2019 provided estimates of 92.3, 25.8, and 36.6 turtles, respectively, suggesting limited evidence of growth or decline over more than 25 years at all 3 sites, though fluctuations were observed. We attribute the lack of significant change in population size at these sites to their landscape context: all 3 are situated within areas >600 ha with no public road access, allowing turtles to shift habitat in response to vegetation succession, hydrological shifts, or other changes and buffering them against roadkill or other anthropogenic threats. We also documented variation in population parameters across both space and time; for example, annual survival estimates varied from 0.924 to 0.986 at the sites, emphasizing the need for locally specific information and long-term studies to inform conservation decisions at both the site and species level.

Road mortality often presents a serious conservation challenge for freshwater turtles. Population-level effects may be skewed toward either sex depending on habitat context and configuration, species, and season, and may be temporally variable. We opportunistically collected occurrence data for all turtle species encountered on roadways in the context of a 2-year radio-telemetry study. We primarily collected field data between March and August 2016 and 2017. We summarized the demographic and species composition of turtles encountered and conducted a logistic regression analysis to evaluate the influence of landscape variables associated with areas of high-density road crossings by Terrapene carolina major (Gulf Coast Box Turtle). In total, we observed 6 species of freshwater turtle on paved and unpaved roads, with 92% of records representing Gulf Coast Box Turtles. Of the roadway observations used to evaluate landscape variables, 91% of the records were Gulf Coast Box Turtles, 80% of which were females. Road crossings were associated with higher percentage of coniferous plantation and greater distance to floodplain swamp. Additionally, for all paved roads evaluated, the percent of individuals found alive varied from 58% to 89%. Our results were expected based on the radio-telemetry data collected on local populations; male box turtles in this area appeared to rely more heavily on floodplain swamps than confierous plantations. We recommend that researchers opportunistically collect road-occurrence data as feasible and coordinate with local partners to develop robust datasets that can be utilized to develop strategic mitigation measures.

Bisexual and pansexual (bi+) individuals remain understudied subpopulations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGTBQ+) community, despite experiencing complex stressors and stigma by both LGBTQ + and heterosexual communities. In this study, we used correlation analyses, hierarchical linear regression and moderation analyses to explore the relationships between societal stressors (concern about COVID and discrimination) and a protective factor (social support) in a sample bi + undergraduate and graduate students. The correlation results revealed positive, bivariate relationship between worry about COVID and psychological distress, along with everyday discrimination and psychological distress. The correlation results also revealed a negative bivariate correlation between social support and psychological distress for bi + participants. Hierarchical linear modeling revealed that worry about COVID, everyday discrimination and social support were significant predictors of psychological distress for bi + individuals. Finally, moderation analyses revealed that social support moderated the relationship between everyday discrimination and psychological distress but not the relationship between COVID-Worry and Psychological Distress for bi + individuals. Findings from the present study will help inform clinicians of specific risks to bi + individual’s mental health when working with this population, specifically regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Embodied experiential learning is central to dance/movement therapy (DMT) education. During the pandemic, DMT educators pivoted to hybrid-online educational delivery and attended to multiple dimensions of student learning and societal crises while attempting to maintain educational quality. Building on the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework and embodied aesthetic theories of care, the authors explored how educators and supervisors accounted for embodied learning in DMT education and training in an online setting. Data were generated and analysed reflexively from a preliminary conference workshop survey and workshop interactions. An aesthetic, relational experience of caring may be incorporated into an online learning space through developing intra and interpersonal oscillation, which can validate embodied experiences and aid in developing bodily agency. The authors elaborate on emerging promising practices and considerations for future research.
