Archéologie des Amériques

ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of the first archaeological investigation at Andhūr (DMa0610), an inland site in the Wādī Andhūr oasis, Dhofar, southern Oman. Excavations revealed a multi‐phase occupation dated to the second part of the first century BCE , centred on a two‐storey building constructed with the ‘sandwich’ masonry technique known from Sumhuram. Architectural and environmental evidence suggest that Andhūr served as a small Hadrami outpost strategically placed near permanent water sources and frankincense‐producing areas on the Nejd plateau. The recovery of edible marine shells points to regular contacts between the coast and the interior. Four inscriptions link Andhūr to wider South Arabian networks and reflect forms of exchange, of people and goods, extending beyond maritime trade. The site offers new insight into Hadrami inland strategies and their engagement with Dhofari populations, helping to define more clearly the complex system of cultural interactions that characterised Dhofar during the Late Iron Age.

ABSTRACT This article presents the results of an isotopic study of the lead used in the fountains of the gardens at the palaces of Versailles and Vaux‐le‐Vicomte—two iconic examples of French formal gardens designed by André Le Nôtre. The construction of these monumental gardens in the 17th century required considerable quantities of lead, a material not found in the subsoil of the Paris region and therefore necessarily imported. Lead Isotope analysis of 16 samples (including pipes, solder joints and basin plates) reveals a homogeneous signature, indicating a shared supply source for both sites. Comparing these results with those from different European mining districts revealed a clear correspondence with the deposits in the Harz Mountains in Germany, which were active and important in the 17th century. However, a few samples associated with later construction phases suggest that additional supplies came from other deposits, probably located in France. These results highlight not only the importance of European trade networks in the supply of construction materials but also the geopolitical dimension of these choices, as Louis XIV's France sought to produce lead in order to substitute it for that obtained through costly imports.

Abstract The world at 18,000 BP , published by Gamble and Soffer (The world at 18,000 BP. Vol. 2: low latitude, Unwin Hyman, 1990), represents the first, and so far the only, attempt at characterising and discussing the impact of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) on human societies on a global scale. At the time, they highlighted that research and data on the LGM in southern latitudes and the tropics in particular were scant. Since 1990, however, many sites dated to the LGM and located in tropical latitudes have been published. Many paradigms have changed regarding the peopling of the Americas, which allows the archaeology of this continent to be integrated into global scale studies of the LGM. The development of Pleistocene archaeology in tropical contexts, in parallel with methodological advances in cultural, geosciences and palaeoenvironmental studies have strongly reshaped what we know of the antiquity of human occupation in tropical regions and specific human–environment interactions. This article provides for the first time a pan-tropical perspective on the impact of the LGM on human groups living within the tropical latitudes, drawing from case studies in Southeast Asia, Africa and South America, specifically regions which have up until now never been discussed together. To this end, we focus on six different tropical regions between 30 and 10 ka. We present the archaeological and paleoenvironmental data available in these areas, along with proposed relationships for variations in these two records. Finally, we discuss at the regional scale the presence or absence of human changes (site density and techno-cultural change or continuity) before, during and immediately after the LGM.

• Combining analysis of charcoals and seeds provides a better understanding of the fuels used in potter’s kilns. • Seed analysis identifying woody taxa. • Environments around a potter workshop in the southern Narbonensis Gaul. • Management of woodlands. Roman-era pottery workshops have been central to numerous research inquiries for several decades. The increasing exploration of rural contexts in Narbonensis Gaul in recent years has progressively led to the implementation of archaeobotanical studies, especially anthracological analyses. However, until now, fruit and seed studies have largely been neglected in this type of context. A new excavation project began in 2019 at the site of Mas des Tourelles (Beaucaire, France), a pottery workshop associated with a wine-producing villa dating from the Late Republican period to the Late Roman Empire, and allowed the combination of these two approaches. In this study, 55 samples were analyzed for carpological remains and 11 samples for charcoal remains. On the one hand, archaeobotanical data indicate the use of small-caliber wood and faggots as fuel, demonstrating the management of a Mediterranean mixed oak forest and the predominant exploitation of holm oak/kermes oak, rockrose, and heather. On the other hand, the question arises whether non-woody fuels, undetectable through charcoal analysis, were also used for firing the kilns: although the carpological results did not reveal the presence of non-woody fuel, seed analysis provided further information to the anthracological results by identifying additional woody taxa.
