This study investigated the relationship between teaching practices and parental support and their combined influence on students’ interest in learning mathematics. Conducted among first-year college students enrolled in "Mathematics in the Modern World" at Monkayo College of Arts, Sciences, and Technology (MonCAST), the research employs a quantitative, non-experimental design using validated survey instruments. Results reveal that effective teaching practices, particularly those emphasizing facilitation and student autonomy, and strong parental involvement significantly enhance students’ emotional engagement, perceived value, and understanding of mathematics. The findings underscore the importance of collaborative efforts between educators and parents in fostering mathematical interest and academic success. Recommendations include teacher training programs focusing on adaptive instructional strategies and community initiatives promoting parental involvement in education.

This study examines the settlement experiences of immigrant women of African heritage and more specifically the challenges and stressors of parenting as a single mother. The work and home dynamic expose issues of parental stress, economic instability, increased effects on mental health, and a strained parent-child relationship. To examine this research problem further, I conducted 3 semi-structured interviews with immigrant African women. This study was guided by three theoretical frameworks: transnational feminist theory, intersectionality, and family stress theory. The results of this study highlight the impact of intersectionality on one’s experience of parenting and integration. Additionally, this study brings attention to the lack of focus on single African immigrant women in immigration discourse. The potential benefits of this research include increased visibility of this unseen population, policy implications aimed at improving childcare accessibility, culturally relevant mental health support and reduce the funnelling of racialized immigrant women in precarious work.

This paper examines the relationship between immigration, the state, national identity and security in a post 9/11 setting. Using the speech act as understood by the Copenhagen School’s theory of securitization, this paper explores how governments’ portrayal of immigrants as security risks within the literature is presented in a practical sense in the U.S. Looking to see how physical, economic and societal security in relation to migration is articulated by governments, a small selection of speeches by U.S. President Donald Trump is discussed. Providing an overview of the current literature within the securitization- migration discourse, this paper focuses on three major themes: the securitization of migration, controlling migration and the emerging theme of societal security—which focuses on the influence national identity has over restrictive migration. This theme is introduced with the hope that further research will be done on the impacts of national identity and social cohesion on restrictive migration. Key Words: Immigration, Copenhagen School’s Theory of Securitization, United States, Societal Security, Post 9/11 Context

This qualitative and exploratory research project focuses on the Designated Country of Origin policy in the upcoming legislation, Bill C-31: the Protecting Canada’s Immigration System Act and its relationship to Legal Aid Ontario. Through interviews with refugee lawyers and refugee settlement workers as well as analysis of policy and Legal Aid documents, research findings provide insight into the effect the Designated Country of Origin list will potentially have on access to Legal Aid Ontario services for refugee claimants from designated countries. Research recommendations point to the importance of reconsidering the manner in which Legal Aid funding is disbursed, as well as policy implications including adjusting the timelines outlined in the upcoming legislation, implementing more stringent designation policies and access to appeal processes.

This paper reviews literature about the Canadian justice system’s responses to woman abuse in general, with a particular focus on abused refugee women. Due to the complexity of the issue of woman abuse, this topic is examined using the following theoretical frameworks: Systemic Racism Theory, Cultural Racism Theory, Social Ecological model and the hindrance put forward by the Neo Liberalism ideology. A general overview of the Canadian immigration and refugee system is necessary, in order to systematically contextualize current and former policies and practices. The impact such policies have on refugee women when accessing the justice system can be severe, firstly due to current justice systems’ intersectionalities, secondly due to the lack of coordination between the criminal, family and immigration justice systems, and thirdly due to barriers in services. Furthermore, alarming recent changes in Canadian immigration legislation, will create further difficulties in access to justice by refugee women experiencing violence.

Although documentary films offer viewers the chance to learn about the realities and experiences of others cultures, it is also possible for filmmakers to stereotype the people they represent. In this paper, I examine Shelley Saywell’s documentary In the Name of the Family, a film about Muslim youth victims of “honour killings.” I suggest that by framing domestic violence as “honour killings” this film stereotypes and misrepresents Muslim immigrant families. Through an analysis of promotional material and scenes from the film, I argue that the film’s use of Orientalist narratives of difference between Muslim immigrants and mainstream Canadian society contributes to the impression that “honour killings” are cultural and specific to Muslim communities. I further argue that Saywell’s use of the “imperilled Muslim woman” narrative to elicit empathy and compassion from viewers perpetuates the notion that Muslim immigrant families are traditional, oppressive and unwilling to adapt to North American society.

Through a review of theoretical literature on the topics of space, power, and identity as well as literature on the Palestinian refugee situation in Lebanon, this research paper uses a critical approach to space in order to examine how Palestinian identity is formed within the specific context of refugee camps in Lebanon. The refugee camp has been used by the Lebanese state as a disciplinary tool to contain identities, but it has also served as a site for the displaced Palestinians to construct meaningful lives and create new places and identities. This paper will specifically examine the way in which a marginalized collective identity as well as an identity of resistance has been formed and renegotiated using culture, memory, and militancy by displaced Palestinian refugees living within the boundaries of camps in Lebanon.

This paper examines the installation of photography exhibitions within the unconventional gallery spaces that have been produced as a part of the relatively recent wave of “iconic” museum architecture. As a medium that has primarily been displayed within the modernist “white cube,” photography presents issues adapting to this new type of gallery interior. This thesis takes, as its case study, the Roloff Beny Gallery, managed by the Institute for Contemporary Culture (ICC) as located in Daniel Libeskind’s Michael Lee-Chin Crystal – a controversial addition to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), Toronto, Ontario. It examines how photographic exhibitions have addressed design and installation issues in this iconic space through three photographic exhibitions

Historic and contemporary perceptions of immigrants who came to Canada as live-in caregivers have changed little over time. Gendered, racialized and classed assumptions continue to demarcate belonging and impose obstacles to their uccessful settlement and integration into Canadian society. However, the notion of success can be interpreted in different and conflicting ways. This paper analyzes the interpretations of settlement for 7 Filipina former caregivers in Toronto, who entered under the Foreign Domestic Movement and the Live-in Caregiver Program, according to their valorization and investment of their different forms of capital, such as educational qualifications or social networks. Focusing on the subjective and diverse perceptions of these women is integral to reaching a more nuanced understanding of the priorities and values that drive the settlement and integration outcomes of this ethno-cultural group while simultaneously avoiding essentialist practices that normalize their presence as domestic workers.

This research project examines the working experiences of Filipino women who moved to Winnipeg in the 1960s and 1970s to become garment workers. Findings are drawn from oral history interviews with Filipina garment workers who arrived between 1968 and 1974. The participants, who have become pioneers in Winnipeg’s Filipino community, will be a part of Canadian history that has, so far, been poorly documented. This paper will also examine the garment industry in Winnipeg prior to the arrival of the first Filipina garment workers, as well as the push and pull factors which led to their migration from the Philippines.
