In real-world industries, production line assets may be affected by several factors, both known and unknown, which dynamically and unpredictably evolve so that past data are of little value for present ones. In addition, data is collected without assigned labels. How can someone use run-to-failure data to develop a suitable solution toward achieving predictive maintenance (PdM) in this case? These issues arise in our case, which refers to a cold-forming press. Such a setting calls for an unsupervised solution that can predict upcoming failures investigating a wide spectrum of approaches, namely similarity-based, forecasting-based and deep-learning ones. But before we decide on the best solution, we first need to understand which key performance indicators are appropriate to evaluate the impact of each such solution. A comprehensive study of available evaluation methods is presented, highlighting misconceptions and limitations of broadly used evaluation metrics concerning run-to-failure data, while proposing an extension of state-of-the-art range-based anomaly detection evaluation metrics to serve PdM purposes. Finally, an investigation of pre-processing, distance metrics, incorporation of domain expertise, and the role of deep learning shows how to engineer an unsupervised solution for predictive maintenance providing insightful answers to all these problems. Our experimental evaluation showed that judicious design choices can improve efficiency of solutions up to two times.

The paper presents the development of a Virtual Reality (VR) application to perform dives in the Christoforos Shipwreck. The huge wreck lies in the Panormos Bay of Skopelos island (Greece) at a depth of 45 meters. Based on a well-known methodology designed for ancient shipwrecks, the 3D reconstruction of the underwater site has been carried out by adjusting the workflow to survey modern shipwrecks. In particular, the methodology, based on photogrammetry, is capable to provide a highly detailed 3D reconstruction of the shipwreck in a few dives, considering issues like working depth, elevations, and thin elements modelling. Moreover, the paper describes the optimization of the 3D model and the software to be executed in low-performance Head Mounted Display (HMD) devices. The resulting VR application, realized for touristic purposes, recreates the exact ambient conditions inside and outside the water simulating the flora and fauna of the place, the coastline, allowing users to live a recreational and educational experience by virtual diving in the underwater site.

Abstract This chapter presents the advanced manufacturing processes and big data-driven algorithms and platforms leveraged by the Boost 4.0 big data lighthouse project that allows improved digital operations within increasingly automated and intelligent shopfloors. The chapter illustrates how three different companies have been able to implement three distinct, open, yet sovereign cross-factory data spaces under a unified framework: the Boost 4.0 big data reference architecture and Digital Factory Alliance (DFA) service development framework.

Structural Restoration of Masonry Monuments
Historic structures need to be restored in line with international guidance and charters developed by architects and archaeologists, but technical understanding of structural engineering and materials is crucial, particularly with respect to response to earthquake loading. This guide to structural assessment and restoration of masonry monuments and historical buildings outlines the techniques, materials and design procedures used. It begins with principles, theory and practice and then presents case studies. The assessment focusses on Building materials and construction techniques used in the past The mechanics of masonry The structural behaviour of masonry monuments and historical buildings In-situ investigation and laboratory tests for existing and restoration materials. The restoration elaborates on Techniques and materials available for structural restoration Structural analysis and design Deciding on the restoration scheme Emergency measures and protective measures.
Read moreA Usable and People-Friendly Cultural Heritage: MAGNA Project, on the Route from Greece to Magna Graecia
The Western civilization is deeply rooted in the Ancient Greece culture; political, scientific, technological and philosophic knowledge were born in this epoch. Their diffusion was improved upon by the Greek expansionist policy in colonies of Magna Graecia in Mediterranean Basin, leaving important archaeological traces for the community. In this context, the European project “MAGNA, on the route from Greece to Magna Graecia” seeks to develop a transnational thematic touristic route between Greece and the Ionian coast of Calabria (Southern Italy), an ancient Magna Graecia colony, on the basis of cultural and historical connections between these two Mediterranean areas. The project aims to promote the touristic development of the Greek and Calabrian archaeological sites through dissemination activities. These will concern scientific subjects regarding the conservation of cultural heritage, both in sub-aerial and underwater environments; and study of the sea floor, and pollution of seawater by microplastics. This touristic product consists of cruises on a ship equipped with scientific instruments that offer unique cultural experiences, accompanied by multimedia supports. Experts drive people in the proposed activities, creating more awareness of sustainable and responsible tourism.
