Great technical advances have been achieved since the first atom-trap trace analysis (ATTA) -based radiokrypton application in Egypt, where 1 Myr old groundwater was discovered. Beyond advances in ATTA measurement capabilities, including reduction in sample size, analysis duration, and analytical uncertainty, major progress has been achieved over the past two decades in the sample collection and preparation techniques. These advances paved the expansion of ATTA-based noble gas applications to many other aquifers worldwide, illuminating the nature and flow pattern of deep groundwater systems. While the potential of this new analytical technique for old groundwater dating is well recognized, another important aspect yet to be examined is the reproducibility of radiokrypton in aquifers over time, i.e., how representative is a discrete groundwater sample, collected at a specific time and location, for the natural groundwater system? The likelihood of a negative answer is increased by flow-field disturbance in aquifers following massive groundwater abstraction. Here, we present repeated 81Kr sampling and measurements in twenty-one sites over Israel, mostly of deep (up to 1 km) wells tapping confined aquifers in the arid to hyperarid Negev desert. The results demonstrate that radiokrypton measurements are indeed reproducible, even in cases where samples were collected as long as nine years apart and from highly productive (∼1 Mm3/yr order) pumping wells. Furthermore, many of the repeated measurements in this study (17 out of the 21 sites) were conducted with different ATTA Instruments in two different laboratories using slightly different sampling, preparation, and analysis techniques, yet with an overall good agreement. The consistency in the ATTA-based 81Kr-dating results over time highlights the robustness of this state-of-the-art technique as a tool to unravel groundwater flow patterns and encourages further applications to many other yet-to-be-explored deep aquifers.

The InChI (International Chemical Identifier) standard stands as a cornerstone in chemical informatics, facilitating the structure-based identification and exchange chemical information about compounds across various platforms and databases. The InChI as a unique canonical line notation has made chemical structures searchable on the internet at a broad scale. The largest repositories working with InChIs contain more than 1 billion structures. Central to the functionality of the InChI is its codebase, which orchestrates a series of intricate steps to generate unique identifiers for chemical compounds. Up to now, these steps have been sparsely documented and the InChI algorithm had to be seen as a black box. For the new v1.07 release, the code has been analyzed and the major steps documented, more than 3000 bugs and security issues, as well as nearly 60 Google OSS-Fuzz issues have been fixed. New test systems have been implemented that allow users to directly test the code developments. The move to GitHub has not only made the development more transparent but will also enable external contributors to join the further development of the InChI code. Motivation for this modernisation was the urgency to treat molecular inorganic compounds by the InChI in a meaningful way. Until now, no classic string representation fulfills this need of molecular inorganic chemistry. Currently bonds to metal centers are by definition disconnected which makes most inorganic InChIs meaningless at the moment. Herein, we propose new routines to remedy this problem in the representation of molecular inorganic compounds by the InChI.

Stability operations, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, are key functions of U.S. Military medicine and the Military Medical Humanitarian Assistance Course (MMHAC) is a 2-day course widely used to prepare military medical personnel for such missions. It focuses on caring for those most vulnerable in the wake of disasters, particularly children. The large-scale humanitarian deployment of military medical providers in support of Operation Allies Welcome/Operation Allies Refuge (OAW/OAR) presents an opportunity to evaluate the preparedness of these providers to care for the needs of the Afghan travelers, so we explored the experiences of military medical providers deployed in support of OAW/OAR to inform improvements in the MMHAC. We conducted a qualitative study of military medical providers who were deployed in support of OAW/OAR using a series of three virtual focus groups. Focus group questions were structured around the main topics covered in the MMHAC (patient care, ethical considerations, logistical concerns, and preventive and public health) and explicitly asked about adaptive leadership challenges faced and strategies used to overcome them. We analyzed transcripts using inductive thematic analysis within a constructivist paradigm, with adaptive leadership as a sensitizing concept. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Uniformed Services University. We constructed 4 themes from participant responses, each addressing challenges that medical providers faced during their mission: (1) Medical providers navigated tension between medical and public health priorities and military mission priorities; (2) Chronic and complex care needs posed unique challenges for medical personnel; (3) Challenges in patient care were compounded by logistical and system-based barriers; and (4) Cultural barriers led to ethical dilemmas that physicians felt inadequately prepared to handle, most notably with respect to gender-related concerns. Within each theme, participants described which aspects of MMHAC training were most helpful and which areas were inadequate. Physicians found the OAR/OAW mission meaningful but also identified challenges related to medical care provision, public health, logistics, and ethical dilemmas that hindered their ability to carry out their medical mission. Lessons learned from OAW/OAR highlight several areas in which the MMHAC training could be augmented and improved to further mitigate these challenges.
