Utilization of Algal Biomass for Producing Biochar, Biofertilizers, and Valuable Metabolites
Algae are considered biofactories of valuable metabolites and products. They not only remove different contaminants by feeding on them but also produce distinct primary and secondary metabolites such as amino acids, carbohydrates, fatty acids, and pigments; thus, algal biomass is exploited in a bunch of fields, including pharmacology, cosmetic industry, bioenergy production, food industry, and its upstream requisites (agriculture, animal husbandry, and aquaculture). Likewise, the algal biomass waste after extraction of metabolites is still utilizable as biochar in different applications. Algae as our primary biological ancestors are one of the most promising options to resolve our world's most serious challenges, namely, food, water, and energy supply. This chapter aims to scrutinize algal biomass, its metabolites, and their applications. In addition, algal biochar as a useful waste and its benefits are elaborated. Here, we have presented the possible ways of utilization of algal biomass with the potential to integrate with wastewater treatment (WWT) processes for value addition.
