God's Businessmen: Entrepreneurial Evangelicals in Depression and War
While historians have treated American evangelicals and business in other eras, God's Businessmen covers the largely untold story of evangelical entrepreneurs in the 1930s and during World War II. During those times these individuals funded and managed religious organizations and causes, believing that God had charged them with preserving Christian America. Spiritual opportunities and greater profits could prevail. Influential managers included the heavy-equipment manufacturer R. G. LeTourneau, the Club Aluminum Products Company executive Herbert J. Taylor, the realtor turned preacher J. Elwin Wright, the Sun Oil Company president J. Howard Pew, and the shoe store owner C. B. Hedstrom. Their organizations were varied: Christian Business Men's Committee International, Chaplain Counselors for Industry, the Association of Business Men's Evangelistic Clubs, Christian Workers Foundation, the Gideons, LeTourneau Evangelistic Foundation, Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship, National Association of Evangelicals, and Youth for Christ. Taylor's aluminum company provides one illustration of evangelical and corporate unity. Taylor in 1932 had composed the Rotary Club's “four-way test,” a code of business ethics that would appeal to evangelicals, yet was, in a nod to religious pluralism, nonsectarian and important in the workplace. During World War II he became treasurer of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), the most important layman among clerics, and there he shaped its appeal, broader than the separatist fundamentalists. In 1944 he sponsored a radio program, Club Time, to promote the gospel and Christian democracy. Psalms and hymns—sung by George Beverly Shea—alternated with advertisements for Taylor's company. Sales, ratings, and numbers of conversions were impressive.

In Carter v. Canada (Attorney General), the Supreme Court of Canada legalized physicianassisted dying. Responding to this decision, Parliament passed Bill C-14, which provides that adults who suffer intolerably from a terminal medical condition may seek assistance to end their lives. Notably, the legislation does not grant access to mature minors. This article considers whether access should be granted, examining the Canadian assisted dying framework, situations of minors who might seek assisted dying, the law concerning mature minor consent to medical treatment, and other jurisdictions that grant access to mature minors. It argues that the ethical principles of autonomy and beneficence that underlie the Carter decision should be used to determine whether mature minors should have access to physician-assisted dying.

Neuro/Trauma Intensive Care Unit Nurses’ Perception of the Use of the Full Outline of Unresponsiveness Score Versus the Glasgow Coma Scale When Assessing the Neurological Status of Intensive Care Unit Patients
: This study compares the Full Outline of Unresponsiveness (FOUR) Score scale with the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) when evaluating a patient's level of responsiveness in the neuro/trauma intensive care unit of a large medical center. This new scoring tool evaluates 4 functional categories: eye response, motor response, brainstem reflexes, and respiratory pattern. : A total of 57 patients 18 years or older were randomly selected as a convenience sample of those admitted to the neuro/trauma intensive care unit and were assessed using both the standard GCS and the FOUR Score scale. The raters then completed a short survey (43 completed) to compare the 2 tools. : Rater agreement was very good with the FOUR Score scale and for the GCS; however, nurses favored the use of the FOUR Score scale (81.4%) over the GCS (0.00%) to assess the neurological responsiveness of their patients as the generally accepted assessment tool. : The FOUR Score scale provides a reliable neurological assessment of intubated patients where the GCS does not differentiate patient status once intubated.
Read moreBiobjective optimization for analytical target cascading: optimality vs. achievability
Analytical target cascading (ATC), a hierarchical, multilevel multidisciplinary methodology, has proved to be an effective solution strategy for complex design problems. ATC decomposition and coordination incorporates compromise between the performance of the system and the demands of the subproblems reflected in their feasibility constraints. Optimal system performance regardless of subproblem feasibility may yield targets that are not achievable by the subproblems. Compromise is needed to accept deterioration of the optimal system performance and to increase the achievability of the targets. Biobjective optimization is used to reconcile system optimality and subproblem achievability of targets while solving the ATC-decomposed problem and generating an overall optimal solution. Three algorithms are proposed for two-level ATC-decomposed problems. The effectiveness of the algorithms is evaluated on mathematical and engineering examples. For a class of ATC problems, the performance of the proposed algorithms is superior to the performance of the ATC methods currently considered to be state of the art.

TYC 3034-0299-1 (CVn) is a magnetically active, contact binary, ROTSE variable. UBVRcIc light curves are presented along with a period study and a simultaneous UBVRI light curve solution. Our light curves show eclipse amplitudes of 0.72 and 0.62 mags (V) in the primary and secondary eclipses. Modeled results include a dark spot region, found at longitude 51°, a 24% Roche lobe fill-out, and a mass ratio of 0.48. A total eclipse is found to occur in the secondary eclipse making TYC 3034-0299-1 a W-type (less massive star is hotter) W UMa variable.

We present precision CCD light curves, a period study, photometrically derived standard magnitudes, and a five-color simultaneous Wilson code solution of the totally eclipsing, yet shallow amplitude (Av ~ 0.4 mag) eclipsing, binary V1853 Orionis. It is determined to be an extreme mass ratio, q = 0.20, W-type W UMa overcontact binary. From our standard star observations, we find that the variable is a late-type F spectral-type dwarf, with a secondary component of about 0.24 solar masses (stellar type M5V). Its long eclipse duration (41 minutes) as compared to its period, 0.383 days, attests to the small relative size of the secondary. Furthermore, it has reached a Roche lobe fill-out of ~50% of its outer critical lobe as it approaches its final stages of binary star evolution, that of a fast spinning single star. Finally, a summary of about 25 extreme mass ratio solar-type binaries is given.

Abstract During the past decade, the number known shallow-amplitude, yet totally eclipsing, extreme-mass-ratio binaries has increased from one (AW UMa, which is now in doubt) to about a dozen. Statistics are accumulating that will tell us the nature of these once rare systems. These individual interacting field binaries are believed to be the progenitors of FK Comae-type fast-rotating subgiants, which are similar to the cluster stars called ‘variable blue stragglers.’ We review our recent observations and new analyses of the individual systems, V409 Hya, GSC 1283 0053 Ori, GSC 2537 520 CVn, using the 2007 Wilson Code and summarize results from our previous observations (V802 Aql, V902 Sgr) and those from the literature (e.g., CK Boo, GR Vir, HV Aqr, UY UMa, EM Pis, CU Tau, TV Mus) to disclose a preliminary picture of the character of this interesting class of binary stars.
