Enzymatic Activity and Organic Acid Profile of Phosphate-Solubilizing Bacterial Inoculants and Their Agronomic Effectiveness in Soybean
Low phosphorus (P) availability in tropical soils is one of the main constraints to agricultural productivity and the sustainability of cropping systems. In this study, we evaluated the functional potential of four bacterial strains, including those present in two commercial inoculants: Nodubiophos (Ag87-CCT 8090 and Ag94-CCT 8108), and Biomaphos (B119 and B2084), focusing on their production of phosphatase and phytase enzymes, organic acids, and their agronomic efficacy in soybean cultivation. In vitro assays showed that all strains exhibited phytase and both acid and alkaline phosphatase activities, with B2084 and Ag94 standing out in phytase-mediated mineralization. In contrast, B119 and B2084 showed the highest phosphatase activity. Organic acid production varied among strains and was influenced by the phosphate source, indicating a highly responsive metabolic regulation. Strains Ag87 and Ag94 were particularly effective in producing lactic, malic, and gluconic acids, displaying distinct profiles modulated by the available P source. In field trials, combined inoculation with Ag87 and Ag94 led to increased soybean yield, achieving performance comparable to conventional fertilization at 50% and 100% of the recommended P rate, despite applying only 30% of the total P. The results highlight complementary metabolic strategies among the evaluated strains, with the ability to solubilize and mineralize phosphorus through different mechanisms. They support their potential use as bioinoculants to enhance nutrient use efficiency and reduce fertilizer dependency in soybean cultivation.

Generator Initiated Power System Restoration: Risks and Mitigations
Experience using remote generation resources to energize transmission system elements has identified the possibility of elevated harmonics and severe overvoltage, causing difficulties in control, trips, and equipment damage. Transmission system resonance was found to be the primary contributor to the described risks, stemming from the physical characteristics and configuration of the power system components. Approaches in resonant peak shifting are presented. Electromagnetic modelling was completed in EMTP-RV, and scenarios were prepared for field testing. Simple but effective energization sequences were developed, implemented, field tested, and the data was collected for analysis. It is shown that the risks were mitigated using the recommended sequences. The primary takeaway from the work is that energization of high voltage equipment from atypical sources cannot be assumed to function as expected until it has been studied and/or demonstrated.
Read moreLong LV Circuits in Road Tunnels
This paper discusses the design criteria of low voltage circuits for road tunnels where they can reach considerable lengths. The "comb distribution" applicable in road tunnels is a special distribution compliant with the two criteria of their zoning and subdivision into modules that provide intrinsic resilience to fire exposure in the event of an accident. This distribution provides primary circuits to power the tunnel modules and the fans and to be installed in a protected manner at the bottom with reduced exposure to high temperatures. Each primary circuit in its module feeds a uniform configuration of terminal circuits. This paper highlights how for long circuits the minimum short circuit currents must not only be promptly interrupted by the coordinated protection devices, but cannot assume a value lower than a minimum value adequate to guarantee the admissible voltage drop. The maximum length of a circuit that guarantees a given voltage drop is generally less than and in any case different from the maximum protected length. For this purpose, a parameter is introduced that can be evaluated in a simple way, which is the characteristic current of the minimum prospected short circuit for a conductor of given length, section and cable ampacity. The ratio between the minimum characteristic current and the effective load current of the circuit is an index parameter which, if it remains below the minimum value required by the voltage drop, highlights the inadequacy of the circuit at a preliminary design level.

Read moreAnimal welfare during transport, evolution, and perspectives of European Union Legislation and Policy
In the one health approach, which summarizes the concept that human, animal, and plant health are interdependent and linked to the ecosystems in which they exist, animal welfare assumes an important role. In addition, the Farm to Fork Strategy of the European Union recognizes animal welfare as an essential component. Transport of animals involves a number of issues related to welfare. Animals are subjected to continuous stress, not only during transit on vehicles, vessels, trains, or airplanes, but also during loading and unloading operations. The handling and transport conditions have improved from basic and relatively rudimentary systems, with elements to attenuate the discomfort of animals having been gradually introduced, especially for long-distance transport. Despite several improvements in animal welfare standards during transportation there are still pressing issues in current EU legislation which deserve reviewing. Recently, several scientific opinions on animal welfare, including during transport, have been published by the European Food Safety Agency, following requests by the European Commission. In addition, the European Court of Auditors published its last report focused on animal welfare during transport. These reports underline the need to review current legislation governing the topic and highlight a number of outstanding issues in the European Union and in Third Countries. This article summarizes the history and current status of this complex issue.

Hypertension among Outpatients at a General Hospital in South Angola: Prevalence, Awareness, Treatment, and Control
OBJECTIVEThis study aimed to assess the prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension in patients attending an outpatient clinic at a general hospital in Huambo, South Angola.METHODSA total of 265 subjects aged 18 years and older were included. Evaluation included complete interview and blood pressure measurement using a validated automatic device.RESULTSThe prevalence rates of hypertension and prehypertension were 38.5% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 32.83%–44.90%) and 30.20% (95% CI: 24.52%–36.22%), respectively. Hypertension was associated with age (>35 years; odds ratio [OR] = 10.09, 95% CI: 5.46–18.66, P < 0.01) and female gender (OR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.08–3.05, P = 0.02). Among total hypertensive patients, 54.9% were aware of their diagnosis, 28.43% were in treatment, and 7.84% had controlled blood pressure. Lack of awareness was significantly higher in younger (age ≤ 37 years; OR = 3.28, 95% CI: 1.13–9.49, P = 0.02).CONCLUSIONThis study revealed a high prevalence of hypertension, with low awareness, treatment, and control rates. Greater efforts are necessary to overcome these challenges.

Ban predators from the scientific recordPredatory journals are threatening the credibility of science.By faking or neglecting peer review, they pollute the scholarly record with fringe or junk science and activist research.I suggest that every publishing stakeholder could contribute to reining in these journals.Universities and colleges should stop using the quantity of published articles as a measure of academic performance.Researchers and respectable journals should not cite articles from predatory journals, and academic library databases should exclude metadata for such publications.Companies that supply services to publishers, including those that license journal-management software or provide standard identifiers, should decline to work with predatory publishers.
