When it comes to having a traveling outreach activity for a museum, a craft can seem like the perfect solution. It can seemingly be all things at once—educational, quick and fun. But, if poorly constructed, crafts can also have serious fallbacks. Using the Chicago History Museum and the Millennium Park Family Fun Festival as a case study, this article discusses what goes into designing an effective craft, and how museums can make the most of crafting at an outreach event.

Virginia Claypool Meredith's role in directly managing the affairs of a large and prosperous farm in east-central Indiana opened doors that were often closed to women in late nineteenth century America. Her status allowed her to campaign for the education of women, in general, and rural women, in particular. While striving to change society's expectations for women, she also gave voice to the important role of women in the home. A lifetime of dedication made Virginia Meredith "the most remarkable woman in Indiana" and the "Queen of American Agriculture." Meredith was also an integral part of the history of Purdue University. She was the first woman appointed to serve on the university's board of trustees, had a residence hall named in her honor, and worked with her adopted daughter, Mary L. Matthews, in creating the School of Home Economics, the predecessor of today's College of Consumer and Family Sciences.

Standards have become increasingly important as use of complex technologies influences all phases of archival work. The Society of American Archivists Task Force on Archival Standards has identified more than 150 standards related in some way to archival preservation. The checklist presents the standards (together with information about availability and cost), describes the organizations that developed them, and calls for increased archival participation in the standards-development process.

Since the end of World War II, the exponential growth of scientific research and development in universities, industry, and government contract laboratories has had a tremendous impact on American life. Yet only a small fraction of the records of this activity has come under archival control.Contributing to the failure to adequately document a major phenomenon of our time has been a tendency of scientists to regard their correspondence files, laboratory notes, and manuscripts as personal property to be disposed of once its immediate purpose has been served.
