A Cooperative Multi-Agent Q-Learning Control Framework for Real-Time Energy Management in Energy Communities
Residential and commercial buildings are responsible for 35% of the EU energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Reducing their emissions is crucial for meeting the challenging EU objective of the agenda for becoming a net-zero continent by 2050. The diffusion and integration of distributed renewable energy sources (RESs) and energy storage systems (ESSs), as well as the creation of energy communities (ECs), have proven to be crucial aspects in reducing GHG emissions. In this context, this article proposes a multi-agent AI-based control framework to solve the EC’s energy management problem in the presence of distributed RESs and ESSs as well as considering a shared ESS. The objectives of the proposed control framework are to satisfy the EC members’ load demand to maximize self-consumption and to manage ESSs charging and discharging processes, to enforce cooperative behavior among the EC members by adopting fair and personalized strategies and to maximize EC members’ profits. The proposed control procedure is based on three sequential stages, each solved by a dedicated local RL agent exploiting the Q-Learning algorithm. To reduce the computational complexity of the proposed approach, specifically defined state aggregation criteria were defined to map the RL agents’ continuous state spaces into discrete state spaces of limited dimensions. During the training phase, the EC members’ profiles and the ESSs’ and RESs’ characteristics were randomly changed to allow the RL agents to learn the correct policy to follow in any given scenario. Simulations proved the effectiveness of the proposed approach for different costumers’ load demand profiles and different EC configurations. Indeed, the trained RL agents proved to be able to satisfy the EC members’ load demands to maximize self-consumption, to correctly use the distributed and shared ESSs, to charge them according to respective personalized criteria and to sell the energy surplus, prioritizing sales to the EC. The proposed control framework also proved to be a useful tool for understanding EC performance in different configurations and, thus, for properly dimensioning the EC elements.

Since pedestrians are impacted by solar radiation differently, urban designers must evaluate solar radiation exposure of pedestrian paths adopting an inclusive approach. This paper proposes a maximum threshold of direct solar radiation exposure for pedestrians based on activity, user profile and environmental conditions, defined as the difference between the energy consumption before feeling exhausted and the energy cost of walking. Two users of diverse walking abilities, a young adult and an elderly person with mobility impairment, were characterised by metabolic activity, walking speed and maximum energy capacity. Based on the theoretical framework, the energy budget of young adults to cope with thermal stress was set as three times higher than for the elderly. This framework was used to quantify the contribution of direct solar radiation to energy balance and then classify walkability during clear-sky summer hours; the term ‘walkable’ referred to environmental conditions allowing users to walk without feeling exhausted. The methodology was tested on an open area and an urban canyon in Milan; applicability by urban designers was key in developing a simplified way to evaluate shading needs. This approach could be applied to evaluate solar radiation exposure of pedestrian paths adopting diverse user experiences as an evaluation criterion.

This paper presents a model predictive approach to the energy-aware control of tasks’ execution in an assembly line. The proposed algorithm takes into account both the need for optimizing the assembly line operations (in terms of the minimization of the total cycle time) and that of optimizing the energy consumption deriving from the operations, by exploiting the flexibility added by the presence of a local source of renewable energy (a common scenario of industries that are often equipped, e.g., with photovoltaic plants) and, possibly, also exploiting an energy storage plant. The energy-related objectives we take into account refer to the minimization of the energy bill and the minimization of the peaks in the power injected and absorbed from the grid (which is desirable also from the perspective of the network operator). We propose a mixed-integer linear formulation of the optimization problem, through the use of H-infinite norms, instead of the quadratic ones. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in finding a trade-off that allows keeping at a minimum the cycle time, while saving on the energy bill and reducing peak powers.

Bushfires are becoming an increasing issue for the wine sector due to grape and vine losses and smoke taint in wine. Smoke affects vine physiology and the smoke's volatile phenols are absorbed by plants and berries, contaminating the wine. Our hypothesis was that, for the first time, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based visible images can be used to study the physiology of smoke-affected vines and to assess compromised vines. Procanico vines were exposed to two smoke treatments, a week apart. Gas exchanges and leaf biochemical traits were measured in the short term (30 min after smoke exposure) and in the long term (24 h after smoke exposure). Canopy damage was assessed with conventional vegetation indices (VIs) and by an innovative index derived by UAV-based visible images, the Canopy Area Health Index (CAHI). Gas exchange showed a reduction after the first smoke exposure, but the vines recovered within 24 h. The second smoke exposure led to an irreversible reduction in functional parameters. The VIs exhibited significant differences and CAHI presented a damage gradient related to bushfire nearby. The vineyard damage assessment by UAV-based visible images may represent a tool to study the physiological activity of smoke-affected vines and to quantify the loss of destroyed or damaged vines. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

One of the primary challenges associated with network functions virtualization (NFV) is the automated management of the service lifecycle. In this paper, we present a full software-based management and orchestration (MANO) stack which operates with OpenStack and OpenDaylight controllers and has the in-built functionality to automate the key phases of the NFV service lifecycle, namely resource discovery and matching, service mapping, service deployment, and monitoring. The MANO stack is being implemented by the EU FP7 project T-NOVA, with the components being released as open-source software. Service mapping and service deployment solutions developed in the scope of T-NOVA are presented in detail. As a proof-of-concept, we evaluate the performance of a virtualized traffic classifier network function, demonstrating the gains of virtualized hardware acceleration.

Scalable and energy-efficient packet switches based on multi-granular forwarding operations
Telecommunication networks are evolving due to rapid growth of internet traffic and the necessity to satisfy the new requirements of emerging packet services. Upgrading of network devices so as they can allow scalable and full line rate traffic aggregation and eliminate any internal performance bottlenecks is crucial. In packet switching devices, since data plane functionalities need to be executed for each incoming packet and power per given bandwidth is strongly related to the amount of processing on this data, packet processing at ultra-high rate is becoming the major challenge. The main trend to address such power consumption and scalability issues is to bypass packet switches by switching traffic at lower layers. This results in the packet optical transport network approach, where packet switching provides flexible end-to-end connectivity based on tunnel encapsulation while wavelength switching, exploiting optical bypass, allows reducing electrical switch size at transit nodes. There are also opportunities consisting in simplifying packet switch functionalities or designing completely different packet switch architectures. In this paper a new Ethernet aggregation and switching solution with potentialities to simplify and scale Ethernet switch forwarding functionality is proposed. This solution, based on a burst-basis transmission compliant with the Ethernet Standard, is able to maintain flexibility and any to any connectivity deriving from the connectionless nature of Ethernet. At the same time, it provides Ethernet technology with efficient aggregation capabilities allowing to reduce processing of transit traffic. This is allowed thanks to an Ethernet burst structure conceived as a variable number of consecutive frames of the same connection preceded by a proprietary burst control frame carrying information necessary for burst data frames classification. As a result, burst control frames experience the conventional Ethernet switch packet processing while data frames are mapped on the corresponding queue/output port according to the result of control frames classification. The proposed solution also provides the possibility to recognize data frames of the same burst through a proprietary inter-frame gap inserted among them; that allows to dynamically adapt burst size to the available bandwidth at transit nodes in order to limit frame delay and jitter and to support intermediate grooming. These features make it a very competitive approach in the context of packet optical transport being able to support dynamic multi-granular switching. The proposed solution has been validated by estimating its efficiency in terms of energy consumption with respect to a commercial packet switch. The impact of burst transmission on packet delay and jitter across ring and mesh networks has been also evaluated through different sets of simulations.

Abstract. We present a study on the characteristics of the sea breeze flow at a coastal site located in the centre of the Mediterranean basin at the southern tip of Italy. This study is finalized to add new data on breeze circulations over a narrow peninsula and present a unique experimental coastal site at about 600 m from the coastline in a flat open area at the foot of a mountain chain located in a region of complex orography. We study the seasonal behaviour of the sea-land breeze circulation by analysing two years of hourly data of wind speed and direction, temperature, radiation and relative humidity from a surface meteorological station, eighteen-months data from a wind profiler, and two-year data from the ECMWF analysis. Results show that breezes dominate the local circulation and play a major role for the local climate. They are modulated by the season, through the sea-land temperature difference and the large-scale flow. The large-scale forcing acts in phase with the diurnal breeze and opposes the nocturnal breeze. In summer, the daytime difference between the land surface temperature and the SST (Sea Surface Temperature) reaches its maximum, while the nigh-time difference has its minimum. This causes a strong, frequent and intense diurnal breeze and a weak nocturnal breeze. In winter and fall the nocturnal difference between the sea and land surface temperature reaches a maximum value, while the diurnal difference is at its minimum value. This causes a strong, frequent and intense nocturnal breeze despite of the large-scale forcing that is usually opposed to local-scale flow.

Forest fires can be the cause of serious environmental and economic damages. For this reason a considerable effort has been directed toward the forest protection and fire fighting. In the early forest fire detection, Lidar technique present considerable advantages compared to the passive detection methods based on infrared cameras currently in common use, due its higher sensitivity and ability to accurately locate the fire. The combustion phase of the vegetable matter causes a great amount of water vapour emission, thus the water molecule behaviour will be studied to obtain a fire detection system ready and efficient also before the flame propagation. A first evaluation of increment of the water vapour concentration compared to standard one will be estimated by a numerical simulation. These results will be compared with the experimental measurements carried out into a cell with a CO2 Dial system, burning different kinds of vegetable fuel. Our results and their comparison will be reported in this paper.
