Efficacy of therapeutic ultrasound as an adjunct to periodontal therapy in cats with early-stage periodontal disease.
One health survey of Enterocytozoon bieneusi in rural Adana (Türkiye) reveals zoonotic genotypes and two novel ITS genotypes in livestock.
Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the most frequently detected microsporidian in humans and infects a wide range of animals. Data integrating human, animal, and environmental compartments under a One Health framework remains scarce. We conducted a molecular survey in a rural area of Adana Province, south-central Türkiye (October–November 2023). A total of 394 samples were screened, including stool from apparently healthy individuals (n = 124) from 64 households and livestock such as cattle (n = 75), sheep (n = 95), goats (n = 60) and environmental samples (lake water, n = 24; mud, n = 16). Detection and genotyping targeted the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region by nested PCR and Sanger sequencing. No human or environmental samples were positive, this result may be influenced by sampling limitations, seasonality, and methodological sensitivity rather than reflecting true absence. Overall E. bieneusi prevalence in livestock was 5.2% (12/230; 95% CI, 2.6–8.6). By host, prevalence was 8.4% in sheep (8/95; 95% CI, 3.7–15.9), 3.3% in goats (2/60; 95% CI, 0.4–11.5), and 2.7% in cattle (2/75; 95% CI, 0.3–9.3); differences were not statistically significant. Sequence analysis identified three known genotypes: BEB6 (6/12), J (1/12), and Type IV (1/12), and two novel genotypes (ShTrEb1, ShTrEb2; 2/12 each). J and Type IV were restricted to cattle; BEB6 and ShTrEb1 occurred in sheep and goats; ShTrEb2 was detected only in sheep. Phylogenetic analysis placed Type IV in Group 1 and BEB6, J, ShTrEb1, and ShTrEb2 in Group 2. Although humans and environmental matrices tested negative in this study, the detection of genotypes in livestock should be interpreted carefully and highlights the need for further studies to clarify potential transmission pathways. Larger, seasonally stratified surveys with standardized environmental methods are warranted to better understand regional transmission dynamics.
Read moreEffects of Dexmedetomidine Alone and Combined with Tramadol on Intraocular Pressure, Pupil Size, and Tear Production in Cats: A Randomized Controlled Study
This present study was designed to evaluate the impact of intramuscular dexmedetomidine, alone or combined with subcutaneous tramadol, on intraocular pressure (IOP), pupil size (PS), and tear secretion (TS) in healthy cats. Thirty healthy cats (n=30) were randomly assigned to two groups (n=15/group). Cats received either dexmedetomidine alone (Dex; 25 µg/kg IM) or dexmedetomidine plus tramadol (Dex-Tra; tramadol 2 mg/kg SC + dexmedetomidine 25 µg/kg IM). IOP, PS, and TS were recorded at baseline (T0) and 5, 15, and 30 minutes post-administration (T5, T15, T30). Within the Dex group, IOP decreased significantly from T0 to T30, and PS increased from T5 to T15, returning to baseline by T30 (p0.05). Both protocols reduced TS over time. Dexmedetomidine alone produced ocular hypotension and a transient increase in PS; co-administration with tramadol attenuated these effects. As both regimens decreased tear secretion, clinicians should consider potential impacts on tonometry, ocular surface integrity, and perioperative ophthalmic management when selecting sedation protocols.
Read moreA Bibliometric Analysis and Visualization of Literature on the Relationship Between Sustainable Food and Climate Change Over the Last Quarter Century
ABSTRACT As a result of the increase in the world's population, natural resources have faced the danger of depletion and therefore issues such as environmental degradation and climate change have started to be addressed within the framework of “sustainability”. The aim of this study is to use bibliometrics and content analysis to visualize hotspots and emerging trends in studies examining the relationship between sustainable food and climate change. An initial search of the Web of Science Core Collection yielded 1166 records. After applying filters for document type (articles, reviews, and proceedings), publication year (2000–2025), and language (English), a final dataset of 1080 publications was obtained. Bibliometric analyzes were performed using the Biblioshiny package and VOSviewer to examine author productivity, country‐level contributions, thematic clusters, and citation networks. VOSviewer was employed for the visualization and mapping of bibliometric networks, while Biblioshiny was used to generate descriptive statistics. In addition, content analysis of the 20 most‐cited articles was conducted to synthesize their objectives, key findings, and recommendations for future research. Publication output increased sharply after 2015, indicating a growing academic interest in climate change and sustainable food. The volume of global production, led by countries such as the United States, China and the United Kingdom, and key terms in keyword clusters such as “food security”, “climate change” and “sustainable agriculture” collectively indicate that this field has become both a political and scientific priority. The most cited papers emphasized the need for interdisciplinary approaches that integrate technology (e.g., artificial intelligence, nanotechnology), land management and sustainable dietary changes. In conclusion, this study shows how sustainable food systems and climate‐related academic efforts are evolving globally. Future research should consider the multitude of variables that influence this link and develop research accordingly.
Read moreComparative Performance Evaluation of Ten Intraocular Lens Power Calculation Formulas Based on Two Different Optimization Methods
Abstract Purpose Comparison of the accuracy of 10 different intraocular lens power calculation formulas with two different optimization methods. Methods Data from 213 patients with normal axial length who underwent cataract surgery were retrospectively reviewed. SRK/T, Barrett Universal II (BUII), Hill-RBF 3.0, Hoffer Q, Haigis, Kane, EVO 2.0, PEARL-DGS, T2, and K6 formulas were used to calculate the mean prediction error (PE), mean absolute error (MAE), and median absolute error (MedAE) based on A-constants calculated according to the User Group for Laser Interference Biometry (Group 1) and three variable optimization (TVO) (Group 2). Additionally, the percentage of PE within ± 0.25 D, ± 0.50 D, ± 0.75 D, and ± 1.00 D was calculated. Results For all formulas, the mean PE in Group 2 was significantly lower than in Group 1. The lowest MAE and MedAE were calculated using the BUII formula in both groups. The MAE was found to be lower in both groups in BUII formula compared to Haigis formula (p = 0.001, p = 0.03). In group 1 the MedAE, in BUII formula was lower than the Haigis, Kane, and K6 formulas (p < 0.05 for all). In group 2 the MedAE was higher in Haigis formula compared to the BUII and Hill-RBF 3.0 formulas (p < 0.05 for both). In Group 2, the percentage of eyes with PE within ± 0.50 D using EVO 2.0 formula and the percentage of eyes with PE within ± 1.00 D using the Haigis formula were significantly higher compared to Group 1. Conclusions The TVO method yields successful results, and its ease of use is its most important advantage.
Read moreInteraction effects of eucalyptus biochar and chlorantraniliprole on soil carbon mineralization under different soil moistures
Biochar can provide beneficial organic matter and habitat for microorganisms in soils polluted with insecticides, potentially mitigating some of the adverse effects on microbial activity. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of eucalyptus feedstock biochar in remediation of a clayey soil polluted with chlorantraniliprole (CAP) under laboratory conditions through the determination of microorganism activity. The CAP as commercial formulation at recommended dose and tenfold dose (C1 and C10), eucalyptus biochar (produced at 550 C) at 0.5% and 1% (B05 and B1) and their combinations (B05+C1, B05+C10, B1+C1 and B1+C10) were applied on a clayey soil while control treatment has neither biochar nor insecticide application.Soil C mineralization (Cm) was monitored for 46 d at a constant temperature (28 C) under two soil moisture conditions: 50% (50FC) and 80% (80FC) field capacity.Treatments B05, B1, C1, and C10 decreased Cm by for 3.5%, 5.5%, 8.4%, and 14.1% under 50FC and for 3.2%, 6.0%, 7.9%, and 14.6% under 80FC compared to control without biochar and insecticide (P < 0.05).However, co-application of eucalyptus biochar mitigated the negative effects of CAP for more than 4% on Cm.B05+C10 significantly decreased C mineralization compared to B05 and B05+C1 while B1+C10 was significantly lower than B1 but higher than C10 (P < 0.05).Treatments CAP and biochar alone and their combinations significantly decreased Cm compared to control in this study but it is suggested that eucalyptus biochar might have mitigated the negative effects of CAP on Cm by forming complexes with labile organic matter.
Read moreCorporate Tax and Economic Growth: A Fourier-Based Analysis in the Context of Türkiye
Theoretically, the detrimental effect of corporate tax on economic growth is often emphasized. However, recent studies emphasize that reductions in corporate tax rates do not always increase economic growth rates. In this regard, there is insufficient evidence regarding the impact of corporate tax on economic growth in Türkiye. Within this scope, this study analyzes the relationship between corporate tax and economic growth in Türkiye for the period 1965-2024 using Fourier-based econometric techniques. According to the analysis results, corporate tax and economic growth series move together under structural breaks in the long term. Long-term estimation tests indicate that corporate tax has a negative and statistically significant effect on economic growth. According to the average of three estimators with different structural properties, a 1% increase in corporate tax under structural breaks has a negative effect on economic growth of 0.084%.

The increasing integration of smartphones into daily life has given rise to partner phubbing – being ignored in favor of a partner phone use – which may impact mental health and family dynamics. Although phubbing has been explored in various relational contexts, empirical evidence on its association with depression and family functioning in primary care populations remains limited. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 222 married individuals aged 18 and above who visited a university-affiliated Family Health Center in Turkey between July and September 2024. Participants completed validated measures including the Phubbing Exposure Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-2 and -9 (PHQ-2 and PHQ-9), and the Family Adaptability, Partnership, Growth, Affection, Resolve Scale. Statistical analyses included Mann–Whitney U, Kruskal–Wallis, chi-square, and correlation tests, with significance set at P < .05. Phubbing exposure was significantly higher among participants with positive PHQ-2 screenings for depressive symptoms (P < .01) and those with a history of psychiatric medication use (P < .01). Although PHQ-9 scores were not significantly associated with phubbing, early depressive symptoms measured by PHQ-2 were. Women reported higher phubbing exposure than men, and younger participants had higher perceived phubbing levels. Interestingly, individuals with low family functioning reported lower Phubbing Exposure Scale scores compared to those with moderate or high family functioning (P < .01), suggesting possible perceptual or relational dynamics in digitally neglected households. Partner phubbing appears to be linked with early depressive symptoms and various psychosocial characteristics, including gender, age, and psychiatric history. These findings highlight the relevance of digital neglect in clinical assessments and underscore the importance of integrating phubbing awareness into mental health and family care practices. Future research should explore longitudinal effects and develop interventions targeting smartphone-related disruptions in couple dynamics.
Read moreMarine Bioactive Compounds from Functional Seafoods: Pharmacological Mechanisms and Health Applications.
Functional seafoods derived from marine organisms, including fish, shellfish and algae, are gaining increasing attention due to their high content of bioactive compounds, such as omega-3 fatty acids, peptides, polysaccharides and antioxidants, which provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition. These marine-derived compounds exhibit a wide range of biological activities and have been investigated for their potential roles in the prevention and management of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, cancer and gastrointestinal disorders. Their effects are largely mediated through anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immunomodulatory mechanisms. Advances in biotechnology, including genetic engineering and improved extraction of bioactive compounds, have enhanced the nutritional quality and pharmacological relevance of functional seafoods. At the same time, sustainable aquaculture practices are being developed to reduce environmental impacts. Nevertheless, challenges such as regulatory inconsistencies, scalability issues and limited understanding of bioavailability and long-term effects still persist. These constraints should be considered when interpreting mechanistic and efficacy findings presented across different study designs and exposure conditions. Future perspectives highlight innovations in precision aquaculture, waste valorisation and traceability as key strategies to improve sustainability and strengthen consumer trust. This review summarizes current knowledge on functional seafoods, with emphasis on pharmacological mechanisms, clinical applications and the need for interdisciplinary research to optimize their health benefits and commercial potential.
