Silicon Photomultipliers for Orbital Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Observation
Development of the Silicon photomultiplier Elementary Cell Add-on camera (SiECA) has provided extensive information regarding the use of SiPMs for future cosmic ray detection systems. We present the technical aspects of sensor readout development utilizing Citiroc ASIC chips from Weeroc controlled by a Xilinx FPGA to process and package events from four 64 channel Hamamatsu MPPC S13361 arrays generating 128 frame events with an integration time of 2.5 µs (parameters are based on JEM-EUSO geometry but can be easily adjusted). With single photon counting capability, SiECA proves SiPM are viable sensors to replace Multi-Anode PhotoMultiplier Tubes in future devices, especially when high luminosity exposure is possible potentially damaging MAPMT based systems. Complementary to the technical aspects, computational and analysis methods for sensor array characterization and in depth device flat-fielding are presented. Provided channel by channel biasing, in comparison to uniform biasing with MAPMTs, fine tuning of operating parameters with MPPC arrays allows for substantial improvements in detector and signal uniformity.
Read moreCommissioning for the European XFEL facility
The European XFEL is a 4th generation light source based on the Self Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) FreeElectron-Laser concept. It is currently being commissioned in North- Germany. The core installation is a 17.5 GeV superconducting accelerator driving 3 SASE lines with photon energies from 1 to beyond 20 keV range with a maximum of 27.000 pulses per second. The international facility is organized as a limited liability company with shareholders from the contributing countries. DESY has taken over the leadership of the accelerator construction consortium, and will be in charge of the operation of the accelerator complex. The facility was set up with contributions from the 11 shareholder countries, either being hardware systems and/or staff or cash contributions. The construction is almost complete, and the commissioning phase has started by the end of 2015. This contribution will report the status of the accelerator complex with emphasis on the commissioning of the accelerator and an outlook to the commissioning of the SASE 1 FEL line.

Hard x-ray scanning microscopy relies on small and intensive nanobeams. Refractive x-ray lenses are well suited to generate hard x-ray beams with lateral dimensions of 100 nm and below. The diffraction limited beam size of refractive x-ray lenses mainly depends on the focal length and the attenuation inside the lens material. The numerical aperture of refractive lenses scales with the inverse square root of the focal length until it reaches the critical angle of total reflection. We have used nanofocusing refractive x-ray lenses made of silicon to focus hard x-rays at 8 and 20 keV to (sub-)100 nm dimensions. Using ptychographic scanning coherent diffraction imaging we have characterized these nanobeams with high accuracy and sensitivity, measuring the full complex wave field in the focus. This gives access to the full caustic and aberrations of the x-ray optics.
Read moreTwo-component micro injection moulding for hearing aid applications
Two-component (2k) injection moulding is an important process technique at the present state of technology, and it is growing rapidly in the field of precision micro moulding. Besides combining different material properties in the same product, two-component moulding can eliminate many assembly steps in the manufacturing process chain. One of the biggest technical challenges associated with 2k moulding is the unavailability of suitable material combinations which can meet the diverse requirement from both product and process point of views. When it comes to the point of micro application, the precise dimensional requirement and tolerance make the 2k moulding a technically challenging process. This paper presents an industrial case study of 2k micro moulding covering all the important issues like product design, material selection, moulding and functionality testing of the micro moulded 2k parts. An intensive search for suitable 2k materials is made and few combinations of plastic materials are presented in the paper which can be used for highly demanding application areas like hearing aids. By using these material combinations, a demonstrator 2k micro part has been fabricated. The moulding machine was a state-of-the-art 2k micro machine from DESMA. The fabricated micro part was a socket house integrated with a sealing ring for the receiver-in-canal hearing instrument. The test performed on the demonstrator showed the potential of the 2k moulding technology to be able to solve some of the existing problems associated with hearing instruments.
Read moreLeptoquarks and contact interactions at HERA
Leptoquark and Contact Interaction searches have been performed in e±p collisions at HERA at a centre-of-mass energy of 300-320 GeV. The deep inelastic scattering data collected in the years 1994-2005 have been used for searches thus exploiting nearly whole available HERA statistics. No evidence for the leptoquarks was found. The limits from searches of leptoquarks coupling to first generation fermions (lepton flavour conserved) and searches of lepton flavour violation in ep collisions have been derived. The deep inelastic neutral current scattering at high negative four momentum transfer squared Q2 have been used to search for eq contact interactions associated to scales beyond HERA centre-of-mass energy. The neutral current cross section measurements are well described by the Standard Model and are used to set constraints on new phenomena.
