Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) play an important role in infection control, maintenance and organisation of the operating theatre. This chapter will discuss the factors influencing the development of infection, the operating theatre suite, hazards in the operating theatre, maintenance and cleaning of the operating theatre, the surgical patient, perioperative preparation of the patient, preparation of the surgical team, draping the patient, surgical assistant, instrumentation, care and maintenance of surgical instruments, surgical equipment, suture materials and suture patterns and sterilisation.

Ion velocity distribution functions in solar wind are often found to be non-Maxwellian. Streams of accelerated particles and temperature anisotropies are typical non-thermal features, whose origin is debated since the early years of in situ measurements. In order to disentangle the kinetic processes which may play a role in the generation of such distortions, particle double streams need to be identified and isolated. To this purpose, we have developed a numerical approach that leverages the clustering technique employed in machine learning. Here, we present the results obtained applying our technique to the ion distribution functions of a typical fast Alfvénic wind stream observed by Solar Orbiter-PAS in mid-September 2022, at a heliocentric distance of about 0.58 au. We could separate up to four ion families, namely proton core and beam and alpha core and beam. This allows us to characterize and compare their features, like the relative densities and temperatures. Differently from the better-known proton beam, alpha beam represents a relevant fraction of the alpha population, around 40%. Separating such a massive beam may shed new light on alpha kinetic features like the anomalous overheating mechanism. Moreover, the study of the velocity drift of the various ion populations indicates that both the alpha core and the alpha beam are sensitive to the Alfvénic fluctuations, and the surfing effect found in literature can be recovered only when considering the core and the beam as a single population. The similarities between proton and alpha beams would suggest a common generation mechanism, apparently due to local physical conditions in the plasma.    

The presence of grain boundaries in single crystal castings is intolerable owing to the detrimental impact on creep and fatigue behaviour. Whilst the origins of many defects such as freckles have been understood since the 1970s, other defects such as slivers, or indeed the small mosaicity observed in many castings have eluded comprehensive treatments. In the present work, in situ X-ray imaging has been used to examine the origin of misorientation defects that arise during solidification. Dendrite deformation was observed, which impacted growth characteristics and led to a permanent misoriention. Digital image correlation analysis showed the dendrites becoming increasingly bent as solidification progressed. In order to probe the deformation modes further, a method was devised to convert standard EBSD data into measurements of bending and torsion angle. It was demonstrated that such defects form as the result of bending moments arising from differential thermal contraction and gravity.

The plasma concentrations of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (1,25-(OH)2D3) (vitamin D3) were measured in blood samples taken from one wild rabbit and 13 pet rabbits at different times of the year. Some pet rabbits had low or undetectable plasma concentrations of 1,25-(OH)2D3 especially if they were kept in hutches. Rabbits with more access to sunlight had higher concentrations of 1,25-(OH)2D3.

We set out to fit the velocity profile of the solar wind during Giotto's approach to comet Halley with the mass loading produced by a simple model of the neutral particle distribution. The model assumes a constant gas production rate, Q, ionization rate, ν, and a radial expansion velocity, Ve, from the comet. It is used to calculate the implanted ion flux at Giotto for any given time and position along the spacecraft trajectory. Comparing the added flux with Giotto solar wind proton data from the inbound leg outside the bow shock, we compute the ratio of the total mass‐loaded ion flux to the solar wind flux at the spacecraft. Hence using equations given by Galeev et al. (1985) we infer values of the solar wind velocity, u∞, far upstream from the comet. Imposing the condition that u∞ should be as nearly as possible constant in time, we deduce values of Q and the ratio Ve/ν required to fit the model to our data. The values obtained are consistent with those derived by more direct methods. Finally, we use our Q, Ve and ν values to predict a possible innermost shock boundary.

The Soft X-ray Polychromator on the Solar Maximum Mission Satellite consists of two largely independent instruments: the Flat Crystal Spectrometer, a highly collimated scanning spectrometer mounted on a raster platform, and the Bent Crystal Spectrometer, a broadly collimated spectrometer providing high time-resolution (128 ms) spectra for the study of rapidly evolving phenomena. Each instrument is controlled by a microcomputer system built around an RCA 1802 microprocessor. This paper presents a discussion of the motivation for using a microprocessor in this application, and the design concepts that were implemented. The effectiveness of the approach as seen after several months of operation will also be discussed.
