Observations on Indian Skimmer Rynchops albicollis Swainson, 1838 (Aves: Charadriiformes: Laridae) breeding colonies in Middle Ganges stretch, India
Indian Skimmer Rynchops albicollis Swainson, 1838 is a riverine habitat specialist bird and a species of significant conservation concern. In 2020 it was up-listed to the ‘Endangered’ category of the IUCN Red List. Breeding grounds of the species are known from the major rivers of India like Ganga, Chambal, Son, and Mahanadi. We monitored breeding colonies of the species in two breeding seasons (2017 and 2018) in the middle Ganges stretch. We identified nine nesting islands and monitored a total of 111 active nests during the study period. A total of 302 eggs were counted with clutch sizes ranging 1–5 and the mean clutch size of 2.7 (±1.18 SD). We observed a 10% & 7% of hatching and fledgling success rate in 2017 and 10% & 17% in 2018, respectively. Low breeding success was probably due to the severe anthropogenic factors such as egg collection, cattle trampling, and stochastic weather events such as flooding and sand inundation by sand storms in nests. We also recorded instances of nest abandoning because of unknown reasons. This article recommends more surveys to identify new breeding colonies of Indian Skimmer in the middle Ganges and subsequently provide adequate protection to the colonies. We also recommend sensitization programs for different stakeholders to create more awareness for the conservation of this threatened species in the middle Ganges stretch.

Firearmwound characteristics vary a lot depending upon type of firearmand firearm ammunition used, site of entry or exit, range and direction of firing, presence or absence of interposing wearing apparels etc. Depending upon the availability and accessibility of firearm, the pattern of firearm injuries and deaths vary from country to country, region to region and locality to locality. Lady Hardinge Medical College & Associated Hospitals, New Delhi primarily deals with medico-legal works pertaining to New Delhi District which is the most sensitive and VVIP zone of India. Hence, the crime rate is controlled in comparison to other parts of Delhi and NCR of Delhi. However, suicidal firearm fatalities by police personnel engaged insecurity, homicidal firearm fatalities and, firearm fatalities due to terrorist activities and counter-terrorism operations do happen occasionally. A 20-year retrospective study from the year 2007 to 2016 revealed that rifled firearms were commonly used. Pre-autopsy X-Ray examination was done only in few cases. Detailed description about wound characteristics, wearing apparels, recovered firearm projectiles were found missing on many autopsy reports.

The well-orchestrated process of wound healing may be negatively impacted from interrupted or incomplete tissue regenerative processes. The healing potential is further compromised in patients with diabetes mellitus, chronic venous insufficiency, critical limb ischemia, and immunocompromised conditions, with a high health care burden and expenditure. Stem cell-based therapy has shown promising results in clinical studies. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC Exos) may favorably impact intercellular signaling and immunomodulation, promoting neoangiogenesis, collagen synthesis, and neoepithelization. This article gives an outline of the biogenesis and mechanism of extracellular vesicles (EVs), particularly exosomes, in the process of tissue regeneration and discusses the use of preconditioned exosomes, platelet-rich plasma-derived exosomes, and engineered exosomes in three-dimensional bioscaffolds such as hydrogels (collagen and chitosan) to prolong the contact time of exosomes at the recipient site within the target tissue. An appropriate antibiotic therapy based on culture-specific guidance coupled with the knowledge of biopolymers helps to fabricate nanotherapeutic materials loaded with MSC Exos to effectively deliver drugs locally and promote novel approaches for the management of chronic wounds.

JUDICIAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE RIVER POLLUTION IN INDIA: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS
With the recent judgment of the Honourable Supreme Court declaring the right to clean and pollution-free water as a fundamental right and registering a Suo moto case âRemediation of polluted riversâ to look into the contamination of rivers has once again started a debate in the intelligentsia about the rejuvenation of rivers in India. The untreated discharge of sewage, silt, and garbage in the rivers and lakes has made around 80% of Indiaâs water severely polluted. According to a report published by the Central Pollution Control Board, Indian cities only have 38% of the required installed sewage treatment capacity which is the largest river pollutant in India. River pollution is one of the major concerns in not only India but around the whole world. This paper focuses on the pollution of rivers in India especially by the tanneries at Kanpur and how the Courts were able to prevent point-source pollution in the rivers in India especially in the river Ganga. The paper argues that the courts have played an important role in the mitigation of the pollution and broadening the horizon of the rights to a clean environment but at times they have also restrained themselves from passing any order for the protection of the environment. The paper also proposes suggestions to mitigate the pollution and contamination in the Indian rivers and the legal emendations that can be taken to rejuvenate the same.
Read moreIs Culture Expansion Necessary in Autologous Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Therapy to Obtain Superior Results in the Management of Knee Osteoarthritis?-Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
Study Design: Meta-analysis. Objectives: We aimed to analyze the impact of cultured expansion of autologous mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in the management of osteoarthritis of the knee from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) available in the literature. Materials and Methods: We conducted independent and duplicate electronic database searches including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library until August 2021 for RCTs analyzing the efficacy and safety of culture-expanded compared to non-cultured autologous MSCs in the management of knee osteoarthritis. The Visual Analog Score (VAS) for pain, Western Ontario McMaster University’s Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Lysholm score, Knee Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), and adverse events were the analyzed outcomes. Analysis was performed in R-platform using OpenMeta [Analyst] software. Results: Overall, 17 studies involving 767 patients were included for analysis. None of the studies made a direct comparison of the culture expanded and non-cultured MSCs, hence we pooled the results of all the included studies of non-cultured and cultured types of MSC sources and made a comparative analysis of the outcomes. At six months, culture expanded MSCs showed significantly better improvement (p < 0.001) in VAS outcome. Uncultured MSCs, on the other hand, demonstrated significant VAS improvement in the long term (12 months) in VAS (p < 0.001), WOMAC (p = 0.025), KOOS score (p = 0.016) where cultured-expanded MSCs failed to demonstrate a significant change. Culturing of MSCs did not significantly increase the complications noted (p = 0.485). On sub-group analysis, adipose-derived uncultured MSCs outperformed culture-expanded MSCs at both short term (six months) and long term (12 months) in functional outcome parameters such as WOMAC (p < 0.001, p = 0.025), Lysholm (p < 0.006), and KOOS (p < 0.003) scores, respectively, compared to their controls. Conclusions: We identified a void in literature evaluating the impact of culture expansion of MSCs for use in knee osteoarthritis. Our indirect analysis of literature showed that culture expansion of autologous MSCs is not a necessary factor to obtain superior results in the management of knee osteoarthritis. Moreover, while using uncultured autologous MSCs, we recommend MSCs of adipose origin to obtain superior functional outcomes. However, we urge future trials of sufficient quality to validate our findings to arrive at a consensus on the need for culture expansion of MSCs for use in cellular therapy of knee osteoarthritis.
