Read morePopulation, abortion, contraception, and the relation between biopolitics, bioethics, and biolaw in Iran.
The Islamic government of Iran recently passed and announced a new law titled "Rejuvenation of the Population and Protection of the Family." This legislation is a noteworthy example of biopolitics-influenced biolaw. In terms of abortion, contraception, prenatal screening, and population control, this law clearly contrasts with women's fundamental rights and freedoms and has significant health-related consequences for different sectors of the population. A historical review of the population policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran shows the occurrence of multiple abrupt and radical changes in such policies over the past four decades. This new law, promoted by religious biopolitics, is the most recent example, and places stringent limits on abortion. According to it, all decisions concerning abortion must be made in courts rather than in health clinics. Such courts are typically presided over by male religious scholars. This law also limits prenatal screening to the degree that will increase the rate of genetic defects, especially in the population's lower socioeconomic strata. By strictly limiting access to contraception, this law will increase the rate of unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. This paper argues that such an influence of biopolitics on biolaw contrasts with the principles of bioethics. Still, Iran's current institution of bioethics cannot address it effectively. Therefore, a new model of interaction between bioethics, biopolitics, and biolaw is needed to prevent the detrimental consequences of such pieces of legislation. Such a paradigm shift is demanded by the current "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement of the Iranian people.

Abstract This article reviews the preparation strategies of dielectric polymers with high permittivity and low energy loss, as well as their applications in the field of energy storage and intelligent sensors. We discuss the dependence of dielectric properties of polymer composites on different types of dielectric polarizations, including interfacial polarization, orientational polarization, ionic polarization, and electronic polarization, as well as the improvement of dielectric properties by synergetic effects of multiple polarizations. Due to the difficulties of achieving both high dielectric polarization (hence high permittivity) and low dielectric loss, we focus on the energy loss mechanism of different polarization types and issues in the preparation process. We also discuss current applications and future prospects of dielectric polymers in the field.
Read moreUsing feminist theory as a research method in the examination of trauma-informed care in a non-profit organisation
The purpose of this qualitative study was to gather information about the experiences of staff at a non-profit agency in the United States as the organisation transitioned towards the implementation of trauma-informed care (TIC). In non-profit organisations, TIC (that is, safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration and empowerment) enhances the wellbeing of employees and clients by acknowledging the impact of trauma and reducing the risk of retraumatisation. Feminist theory was utilised to inform this study to empower participants to voice their experiences and to analyse the organisation’s commitment to the principles of TIC. Four focus groups were conducted (N = 17 participants in total) and all participants reported that the organisational culture was moving in a positive direction. Even in the early stages of the implementation of TIC, management reported feeling empowered and supported by the organisation; however, many participants noted that significant work will need to continue to enhance the emotional safety and empowerment of direct-line workers.

The Grand Challenges for Social Work developed by the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare (AAS-WSW) offer opportunities for the profession to confront pervasive societal issues. Although these challenges outline varying large-scale aims for social work, each also advocates for innovative strategies that can be readily implemented throughout areas of practice. The challenge to “promote smart decarceration” is no exception with the overarching goal of reimagining the current criminal justice system through progressive evidence-based approaches that transcend discipline and professional divisions (AASWSW, 2017). The need is clear as the United States has the largest incarcerated population in the world by both number and ratio incapacitated. It is not surprising that these substantial figures are accompanied by immense social and economic costs. Direct cost estimations indicate that our country pays “nearly $300 billion annually to police communities and incarcerate 2.2 million people,” amounting to approximately $134,400 per imprisoned person (O’Neill Hayes, 2020, para. 1; also see Hyland, 2019). Social costs are more often indirect, accruing and conflating over time, and rippling out into families and communities. Although more difficult to calculate with accuracy, when the cost of lost wages, poor health, and long-term negative outcomes for families of those incarcerated are monetized, the sum expense of our criminal justice system rises to $1.2 trillion, which increases this burden threefold (O’Neill Hayes, 2020). Current direct and indirect costs reflect a significant economic and social problem that largely overlooks moral considerations for the worth of human life and ability to change (AASWSW, 2017; Pettus-Davis & Epperson, 2015).

Ubuntu ethics and moral problems in traditional bone-healing
Traditional bone-healing (TBH) remains a widespread practice for various orthopaedics anomalies in many African countries. Despite the patronage frequency of TBH by patients with orthopaedic crises, the ethical issues involved in TBH are yet to gain scholarly attention. In this article, the moral issues in TBH are exposed with critical inquisition on what an Ubuntu ethic would prescribe for addressing some of the moral problems in alternative orthopaedic practices. To the extent that parts of TBH might be a useful first aid practice in lieu of orthodox orthopaedic infrastructure, this article finds as morally questionable, delayed referrals by traditional bone-healers resulting in late diagnosis of osteosarcoma and preventable loss of limbs, and sometimes death. Also identified are the pseudoscientific aspects of TBH and a disregard for conflict of interests in the supernatural-profane bone-healing process. This article appeals to Ubuntu relational ethic in prescribing solutions to some moral problems involved in TBH. The article concludes that the value for communal relationship in Ubuntu ethic is an attractive framework that can ground orthopaedic care that is respectful of conflicts of interests, and individual’s personhood without an attenuation of the common public orthopaedic health good in Africa and beyond.
