Mindfulness and teachers’ diversity awareness: indirect effect of mindful teaching in a sample of in-service teachers
Abstract The question of addressing the diversity of students is one of the most pressing challenges for teachers. Practicing mindfulness can serve as a valuable support mechanism for teachers navigating situations that challenge diversity awareness. In this study, we test the indirect effect of mindfulness in teaching on the relationship between mindfulness and diversity awareness. We operationalise mindfulness in teaching through its interpersonal and intrapersonal dimension and diversity awareness through teachers’ self-efficacy in teaching in diverse settings, their cultural beliefs, and their’ flexibility/openness. We use data from a Slovene sample form the HAND IN HAND: Empowering Teachers Across Europe to Deal with Social, Emotional and Diversity Related Career Challenges (HAND:ET) project ( N = 207; 94.2% females). The path analyses showed: (i) direct paths between mindfulness and all indicators of diversity awareness; (ii) direct paths between mindfulness and the intrapersonal dimension of mindfulness in teaching (but not the interpersonal dimension); (iii) direct paths from dimensions of mindfulness in teaching to indicators of diversity awareness; and (iv) significant indirect paths leading from mindfulness thorough the intrapersonal dimension of mindfulness in teaching to indicators of diversity awareness. Implications for research and practice in regard to teachers’ professional development are discussed.
Read moreThe Role of Test Anxiety in Virtual School Performance: Impacts of Testing Context and Implications for Equity
ABSTRACT Test anxiety is a well-documented factor that negatively influencing academic performance, yet its impact in virtual school environments remains underexplored. This quantitative study of 1,788 virtual school students in grades 6–8 across 16 schools investigated the relationship between test anxiety and standardized test performance, comparing outcomes across testing contexts – home-based versus facility-based. Quantitative results revealed higher levels of anxiety, particularly cognitive interference and physiological indicators, in facility-based testing environments. These findings align with prior research on virtual schools, which have consistently reported lower student achievement compared to in-person schools. Results underscore the importance of addressing test anxiety to support equitable educational outcomes in virtual schools.

Introduction: The aim of the article was to refer to the current psychological knowledge on the functioning of the family system, considered in the context of difficulties resulting from sleep disorders and circadian rhythm in children and adolescents. The considerations were based on the assumptions of the systemic theory of families and the theory of psychosocial development. Due to the increasingly common problems with maintaining the natural rhythm of life, division into day and night, special attention was paid to the importance of preventive measures, covering both the entire family system and the school environment and work of its members. Method: The method of content analysis of publications presenting the results of quantitative psychological studies on the functioning of family systems in a situation of psychological crisis, sleep disorders and circadian rhythm in children and adolescents and their relationship with the health behaviors of parents, as well as the effects that these disorders cause in children and adolescents was used in the review. Scientific databases such as PubMed, EBSCO, PsychArticle were used. Results: The presented results of the literature review allow for a greater understanding of the connections between family values, parents' health behaviors, parenting patterns, conditions stemming from the school environment and sleep and circadian rhythm disorders in children and adolescents. Conclusions: It was found that the family environment can both prevent the occurrence of numerous difficulties in the functioning of children and adolescents, as well as be their source or even contribute to their intensification. Awareness that sleep and circadian rhythm disorders occurring in children and adolescents disrupt their social and cognitive development, contribute to the deterioration of their health and significantly limit the implementation of compulsory schooling and learning, it seems necessary to take decisive preventive and therapeutic actions. Further exploration of the undertaken issue through conducting scientific research becomes a significant challenge, the results of which can contribute to the creation of effective psychological intervention programs supporting families in coping with crisis situations related to sleep and circadian rhythm disorders occurring in children and adolescents.

Reactive Transport Models (RTMs) are essential for understanding and predicting intertwined ecohydrological and biogeochemical processes on land and in rivers. While traditional RTMs have focused primarily on subsurface processes, recent RTMs integrate hydrological and biogeochemical interactions between land surface and subsurface. These emergent, watershed-scale RTMs are often spatially explicit and require large amount of data and extensive computational expertise. There is however a pressing need to create parsimonious models that require less data and are accessible to scientists with less computational background. Here we introduce BioRT-HBV 1.0 (hereafter BioRT), a watershed-scale, hydro-biogeochemical model that builds upon the widely used, bucket-type HBV model (Hydrologiska Bryåns Vattenavdelning), known for its simplicity and minimal data requirements. BioRT uses the conceptual structure and hydrology output of HBV to simulate processes including solute transport and biogeochemical reactions driven by reaction thermodynamics and kinetics. These reactions include, for example, chemical weathering, soil respiration, and nutrient transformation. This paper presents the model structure and governing equations, demonstrates its utility with examples simulating carbon and nitrogen processes in a headwater catchment. As shown in the examples, when constrained by data, BioRT can be used to illuminate the dynamics of biogeochemical reactions in the invisible, arduous-to-measure subsurface, and their connections to observed solute export in streams and rivers. We posit that such parsimonious models increase model accessibility to users without in-depth computational training. It also can serve as an educational tool that promote pollination of ideas across different fields and foster a more diverse, equal, and inclusive user community.

This study explores how prosocial engagement may enable young people to become committed to environmental protection. Using serial mediation analysis, we examine the data from 530 undergraduate business students in Southeast Europe to depict the psychological pathways connecting prosocial attitudes and behaviors with a propensity for environmental engagement. Statistical analysis is performed using the PROCESS macro Model 6. Although limited by similar socio-economic circumstances across the analyzed region and the cross-sectional research design, our findings suggest that the mediated indirect relationships help to develop attitudes and behaviors responsible toward the environment. Implications of the study include the broader possibilities for education and public policy-making: prosocial engagement could serve as a promising instrument to motivate young adults to accept the concept of sustainable development. In this way, synergies between prosocial engagement and environmental awareness might be used to develop a more sustainable, ecologically aware society. Key words prosociality; environmental engagement; attitudes; behaviors; young adults
