Glucose transporter type 1 deficiency syndrome (GLUT1) is a genetic condition, most often of autosomal dominant inheritance, and corresponds to a broad spectrum of signs and symptoms due to hypoglycorrhachia, which include seizures, delay in neuropsychomotor development, intellectual disability, movement disorders, dysarthria and postnatal microcephaly. The severity of symptoms are variable. Symptomatic treatment consists of the ketogenic diet, which allows energy supply to the brain through sustained and continuous ketosis. In this study, we report a novel heterozygous frameshift variant (c.855_856insTT; p.Gly286Leufs*55) in the SLC2A1 gene in a preschool Brazilian child with atypical phenotype of GLUT1 deficiency syndrome, characterized by ataxia and mild speech delay. Our study enriches the SLC2A1 gene mutation spectrum and emphasizes the importance of molecular genetic studies for screening patients with neuropsychomotor developmental delay.Sentence take-home message (synopsis) of the article: The study enriches the SLC2A1 gene mutation spectrum and emphasizes the importance of molecular genetic studies for screening patients with neuropsychomotor developmental delay.
Read moreAstronomical outreach and education in marginalised and indigenous communities: astronomy as a tool for social development
Abstract The way we look at the sky is connected to the cosmological paradigm embraced by the society we live in. On the other hand, several astronomical concepts reinforce the idea of a common humanity. Yet, scientific outreach is frequenty reaching out only to a specific part of the world population, often excluding people living in extreme social vulnerability, victims of violence and prejudice, fighting for their lives and for the right of living according to their traditions. We present two outreach projects, developed in Brazil, funded by the Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), i.e. “Under Other Skies” & “OruMbya”, which tackle the importance of ethno-astronomy, and the collaboration with leaders and cultural agents of marginalised communities. We also describe an educational project born in the favela of Cantagalo Pavão Pavãozinho (PPG), in Rio de Janeiro, during the COVID19 pandemic, which started a collaboration with local educators and artists to offer classes of astronomy and English language to children in the favela.

ABSTRACT Introduction: While substantial shifts in political and social values typically evolve over generational timescales, exceptional disruptive events can occasionally prompt swift changes in societal attitudes. This article investigates the extent to which the Covid-19 pandemic has influenced the level of democratic support among Brazilian citizens. Materials and methods: Our research employed a three-wave online longitudinal panel study (N = 1,301) to assess the attitudes of Brazilian citizens towards democracy at three distinct intervals throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Our research tool gauged various dimensions of democratic attitudes and inquired about the respondents' experiences with Covid-19 as well as of their close social circles. Utilizing a combination of propensity score matching and a difference-in-differences design, we estimated the causal effect of the Covid-19 experience on both “diffuse” and “specific” support for democracy. Findings: Our analysis revealed that exposure to the virus had limited overall impact on our measures of democratic support. However, we did identify some evidence indicating that severe exposure to Covid-19 had a negative effect on one dimension of democratic support, specifically, diffuse support. Discussion: Our findings underscore the resilience of deeply ingrained ideological beliefs and values. Despite being one of the most disruptive global events in recent history, the Covid-19 pandemic displayed only a modest influence on the foundations of democratic culture. While this suggests that concerns about the pandemic's impact on democratic attitudes may have been overstated, it remains crucial for social and political leaders to remain mindful of actively reinforcing and upholding democratic governance during the post-pandemic recovery phase.

Rehabilitation is the process related to the recovery, maintenance or improvement of physical mental and / or cognitive skills necessary to carry out daily activities. Virtual reality therapy, virtual reality (VR) immersion therapy, simulation therapy or virtual reality exposure therapy is an intervention method of using virtual reality technology for psychological or occupational therapy. The possibility of simulating situations necessary for the treatment, controlling variables and reducing the patient’s exposure to risks are popular factors for this tool. Many studies indicate that therapy with the aid of virtual reality brings great benefits to the patient. In this article, we present, through a review of 117 articles, the feasibility of applying VR in treatments with clinical trial methodology, identifying through the "Patient, Intervention, Comparison and Outcomes" the characteristics, population, treatment time, forms of comparison and if the results obtained are effective. The characteristics identified during the process show that virtual reality applied to therapies can be used without negative interference in the treatment. In addition, the results show that VR in rehabilitation treatments are motivating and show better results than traditional treatments.
Read morePreliminary study for the suitability of eucalyptus chips and coal for combustion in a fluidized bed reactor
The combustion with fluidized bed reactors has as main advantages the best energy utilization of combustible materials and a lower generation of pollutants. The fluidization success depends on the characteristics of the particles that compose the bed. This research aimed to perform a preliminary evaluation and characterization of the energy potential and the fluidization curves in fluidized beds formed by binary mixtures of eucalyptus chips + sand and mineral coal + sand. We tested: 1) physical characterization of solid fuels; 2) chemical characterization of combustible materials; 3) thermogravimetric analysis of fuels; 4) determination of the fluidization curves and minimum fluidization velocity for a polydisperse bed. We observed 19.15 MJ kg-1 of lower calorific value for eucalyptus chips and 10.1 MJ kg-1 for coal. The increase in biomass percentage in mixture caused a pressure drop in bed, indicating the formation of preferred paths and a necessity to increase fluid velocity. The fluidization of coal and Eucalyptus chips can be viable in a bubbling fluid bed process, motivating future theoretical and experimental studies involving the application of this methodology in the development of clean and sustainable technologies.
