ABSTRACT In this article, a ten-year-old girl with Angelman syndrome is described while she is participating in a classroom-based sensory theatre performance called ‘Under the Stars’. We specifically illustrate how high-quality art experiences can be made emotionally accessible and engaging to individuals with severe disabilities through active sensory exploration, appropriate storyline and theatrical frames, including preparation, repetition and use of certain theatre spectra dimensions. It is proposed that these key elements support participation and exploration of emotional situations in a safe, theatrical context.
