Gerda Henkel Foundation

This is a well-articulated article that sums up the last 120 years of conflict and settler colonialism in Palestine.

Joel Jacoby, a literary author, Jewish convert to Catholicism, and informant for the Prussian secret service, fijiled a detailed report of his life at the local authorities in Breslau (Silesia).Presenting a scholarly edition of this unique archival source, this article analyses the machinations among secret agents in the 1830s with special emphasis on the tense relationship between Jacoby and Gustav Adolf von Tzschoppe, who acted as the driving force behind the persecution of so-called demagogues in Prussia. The pervasive atmosphere of distrust generated by the Prussian intelligence system had far-reaching psychological consequences for the agents involved: Both Jacoby and Tzschoppe showed signs of paranoia.

Abstract In the nineteenth century, when Italy was undergoing significant institutional and socio-economic changes, the bourgeoisie affirmed its principles of ‘respectability’. In this context, the spread of prostitution among the poorest and most disadvantaged classes of the South became a real obsession for bourgeois society. Through the study of primary sources relating to various health institutions, this paper aims to assess the role of the Opere Pie in the control and management of prostitution. It furthermore highlights the hybrid function of the re-education, assistance and segregation of those women who represented a danger to bourgeois morality and order. Finally, it sheds light on the living conditions and social environment of young prostitutes.

Going beyond traditional theories on political violence, borders, and oppression, this chapter questions the epistemological foundations of such theories concerning the Global South. I argue that the normalization of political violence has led to a post-capitalist structure of borders where freedom of movement is sold by states, authoritarian regimes, and their militaries. I take the case of Gaza as an example as it is a unique situation where political, societal, and economic issues have pushed thousands of Gazans into self-exile. My experience of returning to the Gaza Strip after sixteen years in exile has helped me reflect on how normalizing state violence can commercialize freedom of movement. In this chapter, I move beyond the political meaning of self-exile to inquire into the new reality of Gaza.

ABSTRACT How was missionary knowledge received and interpreted by scholars and church historians in Europe and Russia? Many late nineteenth and early twentieth-century academics utilised knowledge production from Christian missions, notably by way of scholarly Orientalism. However, the history of this knowledge is also a history of representations: while missionary knowledge helped showcase the cultural and religious traditions of Eastern Christianity, what were the underlying motives and especially the consequences? This article examines the formulation and circulation of Eastern Christian knowledge on either side of the Mediterranean, especially on the basis of Catholic missionary archives and academic productions, the study of which is sometimes rooted in non-Anglophone academic traditions. The aim is to shed light on how knowledge relating to Eastern Christianity was assimilated in Europe, as well as the role missions played in this process, especially from the last third of the nineteenth century, when the institutions and instruments for the circulation of knowledge emerged. Another objective is to address the circulations and transformations of this knowledge on either side of the Mediterranean: collected and developed in major European libraries and universities, it was integrated by the governance structures of churches, but quite often also returned to the space it originated from, where it was reappropriated and gave rise to patrimonial processes, notably alongside the sometimes tragic experiences of certain communities during the end of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of new states. Christian missions, at the intersection of East and West, were at the heart of this dynamic .
