Examining the post-COVID-19 tourism recovery and resilience in the context of the African Tourism Industry
The COVID-19 pandemic has deeply disrupted the global tourism and hospitality sectors, with African nations particularly affected due to their dependency on tourism as a critical economic driver. Despite the sector's importance, limited research exists on the recovery and resilience of African tourism during the pandemic. Understanding these dynamics is vital to addressing the challenges and capitalising on opportunities this crisis presents. This study critically examines the recovery and resilience strategies in the post-pandemic context of the African tourism industry. By integrating insights from literature and case studies, it identifies sectoral challenges, including economic vulnerabilities, policy gaps, and structural inefficiencies. It also explores adaptive, innovative, and sustainable approaches to recovery, underscoring the need for inclusive growth and resilience-focused planning. The findings offer actionable recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders, advocating multi-level strategies that prioritise sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation to guide Africa's tourism sector toward a robust recovery.

Identification of spoilage yeasts in cashew apple (Annacardium occidentale L.) using MALDI-TOF MS
Cashew (Annacardium occidentale L.) is a hardy and golden crop of arid regions, and the pseudo fruit, cashew apple is a vital source of sugars and vitamins that is discarded as a waste during cashew nut processing. Cashew apples start fermenting soon after the harvest, and due to the presence of a wide spectrum of polyphenols and tannins, the change of colour of cashew apples leads to an unappealing marketability and storage stability. The present study is aimed to rapid identification of different spoilage yeasts and to identify them using MALDI-TOF Mass Spectroscopy. Spoilage yeasts like Candida krusei, C. tropicalis, Pichia norvegensis, Brettannomyces bruxellensis were the spoilage yeasts found to have high confidence score values of 2.00 - 3.00 with high consistency.

Polyalthia longifolia (Sonn.) Thwaites is a traditional medicinal plant with diverse medicinal properties including kidney protection. The present investigation was aimed to assess the phytochemical content, antioxidant activity and evaluate nephroprotective activity of Polyalthia longifolia (PL) 70% ethanolic leaf extract against cisplatin and gentamicin-induced toxicity on HEK293 cell line. Phytochemical analysis confirmed the presence of flavonoids, reducing sugars, tannins, coumarin, saponins, alkaloids, and glycosides, as well as the abundant total phenolic and total flavonoid content in the PL leaf extract. The extract exhibited significant free radical scavenging activity (p<0.001) in ABTS (IC50 224 μg/mL), DPPH (IC50 150.1 μg/mL) and H2O2 (IC50 271.1 μg/mL) assays. In vitro MTT assay validated remarkable cytoprotective activity (p<0.001) of PL leaf extract at three concentrations (125 μg/mL, 250 μg/mL, 500 μg/mL) against cisplatin and gentamicin treated HEK293 cell line in dose dependent manner with 70% cell viability (IC50 312.6 µg/mL) and 72% cell viability (IC50 307.3 µg/mL), respectively, at PL dose 500 μg/mL. The cytotoxicity assay also confirmed no adverse effect of PL leaf extract on cell viability in the HEK293 and considered as nontoxic when compared with normal control group. The present study revealed that Polyalthia longifolia leaf extract has remarkable antioxidant activity and nephroprotective properties against cisplatin and gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity in in vitro model which might be due the presence of free radical scavenging phytochemicals.
Read moreUnexpected manifestation of cardiac amyloidosis
This report discusses an unusual case of cardiac amyloidosis. We report a patient who presented with unexplained ascites on a background of stable hypertension and mild left ventricular systolic dysfunction, cardiovascular complaints commonly associated with age. Due to the unspecific nature of his cardiovascular symptoms, it took 2 years of recurrent, unresolved ascites, numerous investigations, shifting differential diagnoses and significant cardiovascular deterioration before cardiac amyloidosis was recognised, by which the disease was at end stage. This case emphasises the need for more discriminating clinical features in the diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis and advocates unexplained, recurrent ascites as a possible candidate.

Investigation of metabonomics technique by analyze of NMR data, which method is better? Mean center or auto scale?
The factors such as disease can disrupt homeostasis, resulting in perturbations of endogenous biochemicals that are involved in key metabolic profiles. Metabonomics is useful technique to quantitative description of endogenous metabolites present in a biological sample such as urine, plasma and tissue. High resolution 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabonomics is a technique used to analyze and interpret multivariate metabolic data that correlate with changes of physiological conditions. Before any explanation for metabolite data, preprocessing the spectroscopic data is essential. In this paper, we show scaling effects in metabonomics investigation of patients diagnosed with Crohn's and Celiac disease. two techniques of scaling were applied as follows: mean centering and auto scaling. Results reveal that the mean centering is more useful to segregate patients from healthy subjects in the data set of Crohn's and Celiac disease.
