Abstract This study investigated the wellbeing of UK police officers transitioning out of service, examining retirees, early leavers, and those within 12 months of retirement (N = 370). Using the Job Demands–Resources model, the research identifies a ‘wellbeing paradox’: leavers demonstrate high resilience and subjective wellbeing alongside significantly elevated psychological distress compared to general population norms. Findings reveal that recently retired (≤5 years) and soon-to-retire groups are particularly vulnerable, reporting lower quality of life and higher distress than long-term retirees. Perceived organisational support and resilience emerged as critical buffers against the psychological burden of a policing career. However, participants identified significant unmet needs for career, financial, and mental health guidance during the transition. The study highlights that the anticipatory retirement period is an acute window of vulnerability, suggesting that proactive, targeted organisational interventions are essential to mitigate the lasting psychological burden of policing and ensure successful civilian transitions.

In battlefield environments, enhancing situational awareness requires particular attention to two critical factors: coverage and detection. This study aims to optimize the coverage of a designated region and the detection of multiple targets using a limited set of available sensors. A Genetic Algorithm (GA)–based approach is employed to determine the optimal sensor deployment, maximizing both area coverage and target detection while minimizing the number of sensors used and ensuring a uniform spatial distribution. Uniformity is achieved by minimizing the repulsive forces between sensors, where these forces are modeled as functions of sensor strength and inter sensor distance. From this perspective, the fitness function consists of multiple objectives that are combined into a single scalar value by applying appropriate weighting factors. A compact chromosome structure is developed to support this multi-objective formulation. Each gene block encodes both the deployment coordinates and the type of sensor to be placed. Binary gene encoding is used to represent a wide range of continuous position values as well as sensor types. Targets are randomly distributed within a specified region, and it is assumed that they move collectively within a localized neighborhood. During the GA selection phase, the best chromosome is preserved in the chromosome pool. If the best solution remains unchanged for a predefined number of iterations, the algorithm terminates and the corresponding chromosome is taken as the optimal sensor deployment configuration.

High-risk incidents require responders to rapidly detect, sample, and interpret critical visual information. To understand how experience shapes these abilities, we used mobile eye-tracking to examine expertise-related differences in gaze behaviour of Authorised Firearms Officers during simulated tactical scenarios. Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed that the number, duration, and horizontal spread of fixations moderately discriminated between expert and novice officers, with experts tending to perform more, but shorter fixations that were distributed more broadly. Experts also exhibited greater consistency in gaze location even when suspects were hidden from sight, suggesting they shared expectations about where threats may emerge. In the moments leading up to operational responses, experts increased their fixation durations, indicating more deliberate visual preparation. We also evaluated which visual features best explained fixation locations. A model combining low-level saliency with a focus on suspects’ waistlines provided the most accurate account of officers’ gaze patterns.

The rapidly growing literature on informality has demonstrated its effects on various aspects of countries' economies. This paper aims to build upon the existing literature on banknote denominations and informality by examining the relation between the value of the largest banknote denominations in countries to their GDP per capita, inflation rate, percentage of people using credit cards, and central bank independence-extended index using cross-country data from 104 countries. This paper uses different methodologies to find correlations between the variables. The results indicate a negative correlation between informal sector size and the value of the largest banknote denomination, suggesting that countries with larger informal sectors tend to have lower-value banknotes. In conclusion, this paper suggests that the informal sector is one of the underlying factors that explain why governments are opposed to new larger banknote denominations and how this is related to the correlation between the informal sector percentage and the value of the largest banknote denomination in USD.Adding onto this, the paper also compares and contrasts the results of the observations obtained with the current literature on informality and banknote denominations.

BackgroundYoung adults who commit low-level offences commonly have a range of health and social needs and are significantly over-represented in the criminal justice system. These young adults may need to attend court and potentially receive penalties including imprisonment. Alternative routes exist, which can help address the underlying causes of offending. Some feel more should be done to help young adults entering the criminal justice system. The Gateway programme was a type of out-of-court disposal developed by Hampshire Constabulary, which aimed to address the complex needs of young adults who commit low-level crimes. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the Gateway programme, issued as a conditional caution, compared with usual process.MethodsThe Gateway study was a pragmatic, parallel-group, superiority randomised controlled trial that recruited young adults who had committed a low-level offence from four sites covering Hampshire and Isle of Wight. The primary outcome was mental health and well-being measured using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale. Secondary outcomes were quality of life, alcohol and drug use, and recidivism. Outcomes were measured at 4, 16 and 52 weeks postrandomisation.ResultsDue to issues with retention of participants and low data collection rates, recruitment ended early, with 191 eligible participants randomised (Gateway 109; usual process 82). The primary outcome was obtained for 93 (48.7%) participants at 4 weeks, 93 (48.7%) at 16 weeks and 43 (22.5%) at 1 year. The high attrition rates meant that effectiveness could not be assessed as planned.ConclusionsGateway is the first trial in a UK police setting to have a health-related primary outcome requiring individual data collection, rather than focusing solely on recidivism. We demonstrated that it is possible to recruit and randomise from the study population, however follow-up rates were low. Further work is needed to identify ways to facilitate engagement between researchers and vulnerable populations to collect data.Trial registration numberISRCTN11888938.
