Item Response Theory (IRT) describes a set of statistical models describing how individual items in a test or questionnaire relate to the underlying characteristic or trait that the test claims to measure. Until now IRT models have not been applied to the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) in forensic and general psychiatric samples to establish its psychometric properties and explore the link between psychotic symptom severity and violent behavior in schizophrenia. This study investigated patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and a history of violence from forensic institutions and non-violent patients from general psychiatric settings in five European countries. A total of 398 participants were assessed using the PANSS. IRT analysis revealed a poor model fit for the Partial Credit Model (PCM) with considerably disordered thresholds for most items. Differential item functioning (DIF) revealed significant differences between the two groups, notably for items hypothetically linked to violence risk, such as delusions and hostility. These findings reveal potential limitations when trying to compare PANSS scores across these two clinical populations.

Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) are emerging as a novel antibacterial strategy to combat the alarming increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR). RONS can inhibit bacterial growth through reactions with cellular molecules, compromising vital biological functions and leading to cell death. While their mechanisms of action have been studied, many remain unclear, especially in biologically relevant environments. In this study, we exposed Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria to varying RONS ratios, mimicking what microbes may naturally encounter. A ratio in favour of RNS induced membrane depolarization and pore formation, resulting in an irreversible bactericidal effect. By contrast, ROS predominance caused membrane permeabilization and necrotic-like responses, leading tobiofilm formation. Furthermore, bacterial cells exposed to more RNS than ROS activated metabolic processes associated with anaerobic respiration, DNA & cell wall/membrane repair, and cell signalling. Our findings suggest that the combination of ROS and RNS can be an effective alternative to inhibit bacteria, but only under higher RNS levels, as ROS dominancemight foster bacterial tolerance, which in the context of AMR could have devastating consequences.

Animal migration is a major driver of infectious agent dispersal. Duck and seabird migrations, for instance, play a key role in the spatial transmission dynamics and gene flow of avian influenza viruses (AIV), worldwide. On tropical islands, brown and lesser noddies (Anous stolidus and Anous tenuirostris) may be important AIV hosts, but the lack of knowledge on their migratory behaviour limits our understanding of virus circulation in island networks. Here we show that high connectivity between islands generated by non-breeding dispersive behaviours may be a major driver in the spread and the maintenance of AIV among tropical islands of the western Indian Ocean. Tracking data highlight two types of dispersive behaviours during the non-breeding season: birds either staying in the vicinity of their breeding ground (on Bird Island, Seychelles), or moving to and roosting on other islands in the western Indian Ocean. Migrant birds used a wide range of roosting places from the Tanzanian coasts to the Maldives archipelago and Tromelin Island. Epidemiological data confirm that brown and lesser noddies are major hosts for AIV, although significant variations of seroprevalence between species suggest that other biological and ecological drivers could be involved in virus infection and transmission dynamics.

Global warming has brought huge changes to marine life. This essay analyses the direct and indirect factors that lead to changes in the number of jellyfish, and the impact of the increase in the number of jellyfish on humans. The direct cause of the impact on the jellyfish population is due to global warming, and human overfishing is an indirect factor leading to the increase in the jellyfish population. However, as a result of the development of coastal cities by humans, the living environment of some giant jellyfish has been destroyed which resulting in a decline in the number of giant jellyfish. The growth in the number of jellyfish has caused a huge expense on the human economy in beach recreation, fishing and aquaculture. Therefore, the government needs to take some targeted measures to prevent the increase in the number of jellyfish and planning to prevent ecosystem changes due to continued global warming. Global warming and human overfishing lead to imbalances in marine ecosystems. This essay hopes to find more solutions that to prevent jellyfish populations from continuing to increase which can protect marine ecosystems and sustain the human economy.

The implementation of the PV system and its integration into the grid has been increased. In this process some power quality issues arise i.e. harmonics, voltage sags / surges, interruptions, flickers, transients, and this is due to non-linear loads, arc furnaces, frequent starting / stopping of electric motors, oscillating loads and interactions of different semiconductor devices. Within these interharmonics is one of the emerging power quality issues in grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. Based on previous case studies and field measurements, evidence of interharmonic emission from maximum power point tracking is one of the leading causes of interharmonics in PV inverters. In this regard, MPPT parameters such as sampling rate and perturbation step size have a strong impact on the interharmonic characteristic of PV system, and to overcome these problems, a mitigating solution has been previously proposed , namely modifications of the MPPT algorithm so as to randomly select the sampling rate between the fast value and the slow value. By implementing this technique with an artificial neural network controller for the control of the inverter. With the proposed method, the voltage perturbations of the DC-link voltage as well as the harmonics of the grid currents are reduced and the performance of the MPPT and PV system has been increased. The performances of the proposed system has been validated on a MATLAB / SIMULINK software environment.

Portugal is home to a rich but understudied bee fauna that was recently comprehensively documented for the first time. As part of ongoing work to improve the knowledge of Portuguese bees, efforts have been made to survey poorly recorded parts of the country and to continue to review existing material in museum collections. These efforts have resulted in 28 species newly discovered in Portugal, as well as eight species added from the literature and two taxa recently raised to full species status. Three additional species, Andrena (Lepidandrena) baetica spec. nov., Andrena (Micrandrena) omnilaevis spec. nov., and Andrena (Notandrena) foeniculae spec. nov. are described from material collected in southern Iberia, north-western Iberia, and southern Iberia, respectively. Andrena omnilaevis spec. nov. is the new name for north-western Iberian material previously identified as Andrena (Micrandrena) semilaevis Pérez. The male of Stelis hispanica Dusmet, previously only known from the holotype female, was also found and is described here. The taxon Andrena (Melandrena) limata mixtura Warncke has been various treated as a subspecies of A. limata Smith or A. nitida Müller. Examination of the holotype from Portugal shows that it actually belongs in its original combination Andrena limata comb. nov., and that true A. nitida is not present in Portugal. Seven additional species have been removed from the total due to misidentification or uncertainty. We also present discussion on the status of species complexes present in Portugal, and review species doubtfully recorded from the country. Altogether, this work increases the number of bee species recorded from mainland Portugal from 680 to 712, and to 722 for the country as a whole when including the faunas of the Madeira and Azores archipelagos.
