This chapter sums up the visualisations of quantum phenomena, made possible by the "droplet theory".

A heuristic derivation of Schroedinger's equation is given, which makes it plausible that the beat patterns of the droplet theory satisfy this equation.

It may well be that you feel a bit disappointed at this point. You probably had heard about the utter magic of quantum theory, where particles may be in different places at the same time, where cats (Schrodinger’s cat) may be dead and alive at the same time, and where particles have a telepathic knowledge of the fate of remote particles. This chapter tells more about this “big magic”.

The space station got off on a rocky first few years regarding international participation, with disagreement about which roles the hardware to be added should fulfil and access to the rest of the facility by the overseas partners.

ESA’s ATV programme was successfully concluded in 2014 with the fifth and final vehicle servicing the International Space Station. Originally intended as an additional freight capability for station resupply and complimenting Hermes’ cargo delivery capability, ATV was a survivor of the orbital infrastructure ESA was planning at one time, together with the heavily reduced-size COF. Notwithstanding the resounding success of ATV, the project contained a promise of much more along the way. Equipping ATV with a large cargo return capsule was considered and also, as an almost inevitable idea, a modification that would have allowed manned flight.

This Darwin year—celebrating the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth as well as the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species—comes at an especially opportune moment. Rarely have the reality and the significance of evolution been so often misconstrued and challenged. The popular literature abounds with ill-informed attacks which attempt to “prove” that evolution cannot explain biological complexity, let alone the origin of life itself. Darwin too was fascinated by the question of how the first common ancestor of all life on earth came into existence, but usually refrained from speculating on the subject. In an invited paper in this issue Juli Pereto, Jeffrey Bada and Antonio Lazcano explore the available evidence relating to Darwin’s thinking on the topic.
