Women's biopsychosocial experiences following embryo transfer: A qualitative study.
Placement of Drains in the Desired Area Using the Liposuction Cannula without the Need for Additional Equipment at the Liposuction.
Drainage is used to prevent complications such as hematoma and seroma formation during liposuction. This study aims to place the drain into the desired area in patients undergoing liposuction with the liposuction canulae. This technique enables the procedure to be completed without the need for instruments or additional incisions. In this technique, we used a thick, long liposuction cannula with a wide hole at its tip. The cannula was advanced along the desired tract through the liposuction trocar incision. Once the cannula reached the most distal point where the drain was intended to be placed, a 2/0 Vicryl suture was sequentially passed through the skin, between the holes of the cannula, and then through the skin again, exiting externally. The end of the suture emerging from the trocar site was tied to the distal end of the drain that was intended to remain within the tissue. Then, by gently pulling the externalized end of the suture at the skin, the drain was advanced through the tissue. No additional scars were created during the drain placement in any of the patients. Furthermore, no complications, such as hematoma or seroma, were observed in the liposuction area. No additional incisions are made, thereby preventing the formation of extra scars. The drainage tube can be placed precisely within the desired area or tract. Only instruments already utilized during the surgical procedure are employed, resulting in reduced overall cost. Read moreDetermining the Level to Affect of Physical Findings and Outcome Measures on Functional Status in Partial-Thickness Rotator Cuff Tears Using a Multiple Linear Regression Model.
Background and Objectives: It is crucial to determine physical findings and outcome measures that affect functional status of the patients, and the impact levels of these parameters on patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the determinant and predictive effect of pain levels, shoulder range of motion (ROM) values, disability and health-related quality of life factors on functional status in individuals with partial-thickness rotator cuff tears (PRCT). Materials and Methods: Firstly, the functional status of 45 patients (mean age: 50.78 ± 5.28 years; 29 female) with PRCT, then activity and night pain levels with Numeric Pain Rating Scale, active flexion, abduction and external rotation of the shoulder ROM values with goniometer, disability level with Quick Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder & Hand Questionnaire, and health-related quality of life levels with Short Form-12 were evaluated and recorded. Results: It was detected that all determinants whose effect on functionality was evaluated with a multiple regression model explained 76% of the variance, and this effect level was statistically significant (R square = 0.760, adjusted R square = 0.707, F = 14.272, p < 0.001). Detailed evaluation showed that flexion and external rotation ROM values (respectively; β = 0.54, p < 0.001; β = 0.38, p = 0.001) and disability level (β = 0.44, p < 0.001) had statistically significant determinant effects on functional status. No statistically significant results which could be correlated with functional status were found for activity and night pain, abduction ROM value, and health-related quality of life domains (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Shoulder flexion and external rotation ROMs and disability level were found to have a predictive effect on the functional status in individuals with PRCT. It is noteworthy that more subjective and patient-reported findings and outcome measures such as pain and health-related quality of life had no predictive effect on functionality. By determining the level of these effects, results were reached that can shed light on the literature by guiding the development of reliable assessment algorithms.

Aim: Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a progressive enlargement of the abdominal aorta associated with high mortality risk. Despite advances in surgical and endovascular treatments, no pharmacological therapy has been established to prevent aneurysm growth. Dapagliflozin, a sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor, has demonstrated cardiovascular benefits beyond glycemic control. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dapagliflozin in a calcium phosphate–induced rat model of abdominal aortic aneurysm. Material and Methods: Twenty male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into three groups: sham operated rats (Sham, n=6), rats with abdominal aortic aneurysm induced by calcium phosphate (AAA, n=7), and rats with aneurysm treated with dapagliflozin (Dapagliflozin group, n=7). Aneurysm formation was induced by periaortic application of calcium phosphate. The Dapagliflozin group received daily oral dapagliflozin at a dose of 1 mg/kg for 28 days. Morphometric parameters including lumen area, lumen plus intima area, and lumen plus intima plus media area were evaluated using hematoxylin–eosin staining. Elastin degradation was assessed with Van Gieson staining, vascular calcification with Alizarin Red staining, and apoptosis with immunohistochemical detection of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9. Statistical analyses were performed using Student’s t-test and Mann–Whitney U test, with a significance threshold of p<0.05. Results: Morphometric parameters were significantly increased in the AAA group compared with the Sham group (all p<0.001). These parameters were reduced in the Dapagliflozin group compared with the AAA group (all p<0.001). Elastin degradation and calcium deposition were higher in the AAA group compared with Sham (p=0.001 and p=0.002) and decreased with dapagliflozin treatment (p=0.001 and p=0.012). Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 expression was elevated in the AAA group (p=0.002 and p=0.003) and decreased in the Dapagliflozin group, although the reduction in Caspase-9 did not reach statistical significance (p=0.068). Conclusion: Dapagliflozin reduced aortic dilatation, elastin degradation, vascular calcification, and Caspase-3–mediated apoptosis in a calcium phosphate–induced rat model of abdominal aortic aneurysm. These findings suggest that dapagliflozin exerts protective effects on vascular integrity beyond glucose regulation and may represent a potential medical therapy for abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Serum Perilipin-2 as a Novel Biomarker for Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Association with Hypoxic Burden and Disease Severity.
Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome is a common sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by recurrent upper airway collapse during sleep and is closely associated with metabolic dysregulation, including insulin resistance, adipose tissue dysfunction, and impaired lipid metabolism. Perilipin-2 (PLIN-2), a lipid droplet-associated protein involved in triglyceride storage and regulation of lipolysis, may reflect alterations in lipid homeostasis associated with OSA. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the association between serum PLIN-2 levels and OSA and to assess the relationship between PLIN-2 concentrations and disease severity. Methods: A total of 231 participants were included in this study, comprising 70 healthy controls and 161 patients with OSA. Patients were classified according to apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) as having mild (n = 60), moderate (n = 52), or severe OSA (n = 49). All participants underwent overnight polysomnography (PSG). Results: Serum PLIN-2 levels were significantly higher in patients with OSA and increased progressively with disease severity. PLIN-2 levels were positively correlated with polysomnographic indices of OSA severity, including AHI and oxygen desaturation index. ROC analysis demonstrated good discriminative performance of PLIN-2 for OSA presence and for distinguishing mild from severe OSA. Conclusions: This study is the first to demonstrate an association between serum PLIN-2 levels and OSA. Our findings suggest that PLIN-2 may serve as a novel biomarker reflecting metabolic and lipid-related disturbances in OSA and may provide new insights into the pathophysiological link between intermittent hypoxia and altered lipid metabolism.
Read moreEthosomal Nanocarriers for Hydrophilic Peptide Encapsulation: Formulation Optimization, Stability, and In Vitro Release Performance.
Hydrolyzed collagen peptides (HCP) are widely used as bioactive ingredients in anti-aging and skin rejuvenation formulations due to their role in supporting skin hydration, elasticity, and extracellular matrix integrity. However, their high hydrophilicity limits effective incorporation into lipid-based systems, and restricts controlled release from formulations. In this study, ethosomal nanocarriers were designed as a phospholipid-ethanol-based system to promote favorable molecular interactions with hydrophilic peptides, aiming to enhance the encapsulation, stability, and controlled release of HCP for dermocosmetic applications. HCP-loaded ethosomes were prepared using phospholipid (Lipoid P75) and ethanol and optimized by varying high-pressure homogenization cycles. Physicochemical properties, including vesicle size, distribution uniformity, zeta potential, pH, and long-term stability, were monitored for up to 180 days. Vesicle morphology and peptide-lipid interactions were characterized using cryo-scanning electron microscopy and FTIR spectroscopy. Encapsulation efficiency was determined by ultrafiltration, while cytocompatibility was assessed in HaCaT keratinocyte cells. In vitro release behavior was investigated using Franz diffusion cells and compared with aqueous HCP solutions. All formulations exhibited nanoscale size distribution and high colloidal stability, with negative zeta potentials ranging from -42.9 to -76.7 mV. The optimized formulation demonstrated sustained encapsulation efficiency (73% after 180 days) and preservation of peptide structure, as confirmed by FTIR, indicating effective chemical stabilization within the ethosomal matrix. Cytotoxicity studies confirmed good skin cell compatibility. In vitro release studies revealed a controlled and prolonged release profile from ethosomal carriers compared with free HCP solutions, suggesting improved topical bioavailability of collagen peptides. To the best of our knowledge, this work provides one of the first systematic investigations of optimized ethosomal systems for the stabilization of hydrophilic collagen peptides as anti-aging dermocosmetic ingredients. These findings demonstrate that optimized HCP-loaded ethosomes represent a promising ingredient formulation platform enabling bioactive preservation, formulation stability, and controlled topical performance for collagen-based skin rejuvenation applications.
Read moreA Survey of Commercial Pine Turpentine Essential Oil Products from the Turkish Market and Their Compliance with European Pharmacopoeia 10.0.
Pine turpentine essential oil (PTEO) obtained from Pinus pinaster Ait. is known to be used in many fields such as medicine, cosmetics, agriculture, and art. The medicinal use of essential oils puts pressure on industry to produce high-quality products. Pure essential oils derived from natural sources are mistakenly recognized as safe on the grounds of their natural origin. Unless they meet international standards, their safety remains questionable. Therefore, in this study, it was aimed to evaluate the quality of 14 different pine turpentine essential oil samples purchased from various sources on the Turkish market, based on the legally recognized pharmacopoeia in Türkiye, the European Pharmacopoeia (EP). As stated in the "Turpentine Oil" monograph, appearance, relative density, refractive index, optical rotation, acid value, peroxide value, fatty oils, and resinified essential oils analyses were performed for each sample. Additionally, phytochemical profiles were analyzed by high performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results revealed that none of the samples were compliant with EP standards. With this in mind, it is found necessary to impose strict regulations on the production of commercial essential oils. Nevertheless, pharmacies emerge as preferable options for obtaining such products.

Turkish Thoracic Society Declaration on Peace and Health the Importance of Breathing in a World Without War.
War legitimizes the right to kill for its participants, equating victory with moral justification; however, this perceived legitimacy is largely constructed on the deaths of civilians and other living beings. Medicine, by its very nature, is grounded in the principles of preserving life, doing no harm, and adhering to scientific and ethical standards, and is therefore fundamentally opposed to the philosophy of war. Wars lead, directly and indirectly, to deaths, disability, displacement, poverty, and long-term public health disasters. Attacks on health facilities, restrictions on access to food and water, environmental destruction, and air pollution disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, particularly women and children. The psychological consequences of war often evolve into persistent neuropsychiatric conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and moral injury. Peace is not merely the absence of war; it is a prerequisite for health, environmental sustainability, and social well-being. The concept of positive peace strengthens health indicators through well-functioning institutions, equitable resource distribution, and the protection of human rights. Within this framework, health professionals and civil society organizations are critical actors in advocating for peace and in making human rights violations visible. The Turkish Thoracic Society regards peace as an indispensable condition for public and respiratory health, affirms its opposition to all wars-particularly the ongoing atrocities in Gaza-and reaffirms its commitment to sustained, health-based advocacy for peace.
