Abstract In an era marked by an abundance of news sources, access to information significantly influences public opinion. Notably, the bias of news sources often serves as an indicator of individuals' political leanings. This study explores this hypothesis by examining the news sharing behavior of politically active social media users, whose political ideologies were identified in a previous study. Using correspondence analysis, we estimate the Media Sharing Index (MSI), a measure that captures bias in media outlets and user preferences within a hidden space. During Argentina’s 2019 election on Twitter, we observed a predictable pattern: center-right individuals predominantly shared media from center-right biased outlets. However, it is noteworthy that those with center-left inclinations displayed a more diverse media consumption, which is a significant finding. Despite a noticeable polarization based on political affiliation observed in a retweet network analysis, center-left users showed more diverse media sharing preferences, particularly concerning the MSI. Although these findings are specific to Argentina, the developed methodology can be applied in other countries to assess the correlation between users’ political leanings and the media they share.

It took the mass murder of six Asian women in Atlanta last week to draw national attention to what Asian Americans have been warning about since the wake of the pandemic: anti-Asian violence. The incident reflects an under-recognized history of anti-Asian violence and discrimination in this country that dates back more than 150 years. This needs to change. Asian Americans must become central to the discourse on race in America. For the country to “care” about the outcry by Asian Americans, the public needs to understand how America got to this point.

As faculty collective bargaining reaches the half-century mark, the authors take a critical look at what has or has not worked at the bargaining table; how the early expectations of what faculty bargaining would bring to the academy have or have not been realized; and what the future holds, both in terms of process and the substantive issues that will be brought to the table. Dr. Julius has been a faculty member, administrator and employer representative in negotiations at many institutions; Mr. DiGiovanni has served a labor counsel and has negotiated with faculty unions at numerous institutions since the late 1970s. Both share their retrospective on what is new today and what has not changed over that time.

This chapter extends our analysis of China's scientific and technical talent by examining its distribution, deployment, and utilization in key emerging technological fields such as information and telecommunications technology (ICT) as well as biotechnology and nanotechnology – the so-called science-based technologies. The development and advancement of national capabilities in these technological fields has become a high-level priority for the Chinese leadership, as, collectively, they are viewed increasingly as critical engines for the nation's current and future economic growth and national security. Most important, these high-technology fields have witnessed a significant transformation in the structure and size of their workforce and steadily increased the demand for more high-quality talent.

Investigation of an index of returns on professionally managed currency funds and a subset of returns from 34 individual currency fund managers finds that over the 1990–2006 period, currency fund managers earned excess returns averaging 25 bps per month. The study examines the relationship of these returns to four factors that represent the returns from distinct styles of currency trading—carry, trend, value, and volatility. The four factors explain a substantial portion of the variability in index returns. The study’s approach modifies the definition of alpha returns to only that portion of excess returns not explained by the four factors. The impact of this change on measured alpha is substantial, but some currency fund managers still generate alpha returns.

We show that a mixture of two species of granular particles with equal sizes but differing densities can be either segregated or mixed by adjusting the granular temperature gradient and the magnitude of the gravitational force. In the absence of gravity, the dense, heavy particles move to the colder regions. If the temperature gradient is put into a gravitational field with the colder regions above the hotter, a uniform mixture of light and heavy particles can be attained. This situation can be realized in a container of finite height with a vibrating bottom, placed in a gravitational field. We present a relation between the height of the container, the particle properties, and the strength of gravity required to minimize segregation.KeywordsGranular MaterialHeavy ParticleGranular MediumCold RegionAverage Kinetic EnergyThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. We study the scaling behavior of the pressure structure function for isotropic turbulence. This function is given exactly by Hill and Wilczak [J. Fluid Mech. 296, 247 (1995)] in terms of the three independent fourth order velocity structure functions, L(r)=〈Δu4(r)〉, T(r)=〈Δv4(r)〉, and M(r)=〈Δu2(r)Δv2(r)〉. We show from direct numerical simulation (DNS) that the cancellation between the positive terms proportional to L(r) and T(r) and the negative terms proportional to M(r) is almost complete. This suggests that the pressure structure function is extremely sensitive to recently observed small differences in scaling among the three quantities L(r), T(r), and M(r). We illustrate this sensitivity by calculating the pressure structure function in the atmospheric boundary layer using the recent data of B. Dhruva, Y. Tsuji, and K. R. Sreenivasan [Phys. Rev. E 56, R4928 (1997)]. The cancellation among the three terms persists, and gives an effective scaling exponent for the pressure structure function, 〈(Δp(r))2〉∝r1.17, which is smaller than the scaling exponent for any of the three velocity structure functions.

The steady, incompressible, high Reynolds number, viscous flow past a row of flat plates is computed by a Galerkin finite element discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations in the streamfunction/vorticity formulation. A novel implementation of the inflow and outflow boundary conditions is described, which combines numerical stability with computational economy in the solution procedure. The calculations reported here cover the range of medium and small blockage ratios, i. e. 5 ≼ a ≼ 25 (where a is the inverse blockage ratio). A transition is found from narrow wake eddies for small values of a , to wide wake eddies for values of a above a crit ≈ 15. This transition is in general agreement with the trends reported earlier by Fornberg (1991), for the related problem of flow past a row of circular cylinders (for which a crit was approximately 8).
