O protocolo hexagonal humanizado tem se destacado como abordagem inovadora no cenário da cirurgia plástica, ao integrar aspectos técnicos e humanos no cuidado ao paciente. Este estudo tem como objetivo realizar uma revisão sistemática da literatura brasileira sobre a eficácia dessa metodologia e seus impactos na satisfação dos pacientes submetidos a procedimentos estéticos. Foram utilizados bancos de dados nacionais, como SciELO, LILACS e BVS, com descritores específicos. Os resultados indicam que o protocolo favorece a construção de vínculo médico-paciente, melhora os desfechos clínicos e eleva os índices de satisfação, especialmente quando aplicado de forma multidisciplinar e com foco em escuta ativa. Conclui-se que o protocolo hexagonal humanizado representa um avanço promissor na prática da cirurgia plástica, necessitando, no entanto, de mais estudos longitudinais e com maior rigor metodológico para validação ampla de seus benefícios.

The Oriental fruit fly (OFF), Bactrocera dorsalis, is one of the most destructive pests in the world, with 437 species of known host plants. These include many of Florida’s fruit crops, vegetables, and ornamental plants. Because of the potential of OFF to economically damage Florida’s agricultural industry, an interactive database was created to help emergency programs focus their control efforts by using accurate fruit phenology for all potential hostplants in Florida at any time. For each hostplant, the database provides the counties where it is found, its common and scientific names, and months of fruit production. The database is easily searchable and hosted online, https://go.ufl.edu/offhosts. The database was created by a grant from the US Department of Agricultural, Animal, and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Surfing is a growing international industry with an increasingly diverse participant population and infrastructure that can result in positive and negative social, ecological, and economic impacts on the surfing communities. Surfers who are seeking authentic experiences may require travel to remote, rural, and economically impoverished areas. Many of these destinations have significant developmental needs that can be addressed via volunteering by surf tourists. As sustainability becomes an increasingly critical and pressing issue, more surf voluntourism organizations are emerging. Yet, there have been no studies exploring the personality traits of surf voluntourists, which could be leveraged to influence the success of the programs. This research study used the HEXACO-PI-R scale to identify personality traits of surf voluntourists that can help community and nonprofit organizations develop more effective programs for surf tourists to maximize benefits, minimize conflicts, and contribute to the sustainability of the surfing destination.

Background: Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for noncommunicable diseases, particularly among older adults. We examined changes in cardiovascular risk factors among older adults in a community-based fitness program in Miami-Dade County, FL. Methods: We used repeated measures linear mixed models to examine participants' cardiovascular risk factor changes over 28 months. Outcomes (body mass index, blood pressure, pulse, arm/leg strength, and mobility) were modeled accounting for park, individual, time, and sociodemographic factors (2017-2019). Results: The study included 210 participants (mean age 71 years; 86% female; 52% Hispanic, 38% non-Hispanic Black). Participation was positively associated with reductions in cardiovascular risk, including improvements in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (-0.83 and -0.39 mmHg, respectively), mobility (-0.07 s) and arm strength (0.5 arm curls). Differences were observed in arm curls across sex and pulse across poverty areas. Conclusion: Participating in a park-based fitness program was associated with improved older adults' cardiovascular health.

The southern US has a large presence of mosquito vector species for dengue virus (DENV) and experiences thousands of DENV importations every year, which have led to several local outbreaks. Adulticide spraying targeting active mosquitoes is one of the most common insecticide strategies used as a response to an outbreak. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of adulticide spraying conducted at different times of the day to curb DENV transmission. Based on unique dataset of Aedes aegypti diel activity patterns in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and Brownsville, Texas, we developed a mechanistic model of DENV transmission, which simulates adulticide spraying interventions. We estimated that spraying adulticide for 14 consecutive days at 7am or 8 pm was highly effective in reducing DENV outbreak probability from 10% in the absence of interventions to 0.1% for Miami-Dade County, and from 7.8 to 0.1% for Brownsville. Moreover, in case of a local outbreak in Miami-Dade County, we estimated the median number of symptomatic infections after the identification of a local outbreak to be reduced from 67.0 (IQR: 25.5–103.0) in the absence of interventions to 1.0 (IQR: 0.0–2.0) when spraying adulticide for 14 consecutive days at 8 pm. In Brownsville, the same intervention is estimated to lead to a decrease from 15.0 (IQR: 7.0–33.0) cases to 1.0 (IQR: 0.0–2.0). Our study highlights the importance of considering diel activity patterns of vector mosquito species in arbovirus preparedness and response planning and provide quantitative evidence to guide the decision-making of mosquito control authorities.

Abstract Cities are increasingly using nature-based approaches to address urban sustainability challenges. These approaches leverage ecological processes associated with Urban Ecological Infrastructure (UEI) to resolve issues through ecosystem services. The growing use of UEI to address urban sustainability challenges provides opportunities to bring urban researchers and practitioners together to co-produce UEI design, monitoring, and maintenance. Until recently these co-production processes have received little attention in the literature. We used a social-ecological research approach to examine a co-produced UEI design process and the outcomes of the associated UEI project—bioretention basins on the campus of Arizona State University (Tempe, AZ, USA). We collaborated with key project researchers and practitioners to produce an ecohydrological monitoring protocol for the site to measure water quality, hydrology, soil moisture, and plant transpiration. We then implemented this protocol to monitor and evaluate UEI performance outcomes. Finally, we conducted semistructured interviews to document the transdisciplinary co-production design process and outcomes. The co-production experience resulted in observable change in attitudes among participants toward the integration of urban ecological research with the monitoring of UEI performance. Our results confirmed that the UEI bioswale system met the stormwater design goals of retaining 2 h 100 year storm events onsite, with some additional capacity for nutrient reduction. These data and results are being used by practitioners to gain SITES certification for the project and to inform future design and management of UEI across the ASU campuses. Invasive mosquito vector species have been inadvertently transported to new areas by humans for decades. Strong evidence supports that monitoring maritime, terrestrial, and aerial points of entry is an essential part of the effort to curb the invasion and establishment of invasive vector mosquito species. Miami-Dade County, Florida is an important operational hub for the cruise ship industry and leisure boats that routinely visit nearby areas in the Caribbean, and freight cargo ships transporting goods from Miami-Dade to Caribbean countries and vice versa. To deal with the increasing public health concern, we hypothesized that mosquito surveillance in small- and medium-sized maritime ports of entry in Miami-Dade is crucial to allow the early detection of invasive mosquito species. Therefore, we have selected 12 small- and medium-sized maritime ports of entry in Miami-Dade County with an increased flow of people and commodities that were not covered by the current mosquito surveillance system. Collection sites were comprised of two distinct environments, four marinas with international traffic of leisure boats, and eight maintenance and commercial freight cargo ship ports. Mosquitoes were collected weekly at each of the 12 collection sites for 24 hours for 6 weeks in the Spring and then for 6 additional weeks in the Summer using BG-Sentinel traps. A total of 32,590 mosquitoes were collected, with Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti being the most abundant species totaling 19,987 and 11,247 specimens collected, respectively. Our results show that important mosquito vector species were present in great numbers in all of the 12 maritime ports of entry surveyed during this study. The relative abundance of Cx. quinquefasciatus and Ae. aegypti was substantially higher in the commercial freight cargo ship ports than in the marinas. These results indicate that even though both areas are conducive for the proliferation of vector mosquitoes, the port area in the Miami River is especially suitable for the proliferation of vector mosquitoes. Therefore, this potentially allows the establishment of invasive mosquito species inadvertently brought in by cargo freights.

Abstract There are limited data on why the 2016 Zika outbreak in Miami-Dade County, Florida was confined to certain neighborhoods. In this research, Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of Zika virus, are studied to examine neighborhood-level differences in their population dynamics and underlying processes. Weekly mosquito data were acquired from the Miami-Dade County Mosquito Control Division from 2016 to 2020 from 172 traps deployed around Miami-Dade County. Using Random Forest, a machine learning method, predictive models of spatiotemporal dynamics of Ae. aegypti in response to meteorological conditions and neighborhood-specific socio-demographic and physical characteristics, such as land-use and land-cover type and income level, were created. The study area was divided into two groups: areas affected by local transmission of Zika during the 2016 outbreak and unaffected areas. Aedes aegypti populations in areas affected by Zika were more strongly influenced by 14- and 21-day lagged weather conditions. In the unaffected areas, mosquito populations were more strongly influenced by land-use and day-of-collection weather conditions. There are neighborhood-scale differences in Ae. aegypti population dynamics. These differences in turn influence vector-borne disease diffusion in a region. These results have implications for vector control experts to lead neighborhood-specific vector control strategies and for epidemiologists to guide vector-borne disease risk preparations, especially for containing the spread of vector-borne disease in response to ongoing climate change.

BackgroundVector-borne diseases are a major burden to public health. Controlling mosquitoes is considered the most effective way to prevent vector-borne disease transmission. Mosquito surveillance is a core component of integrated vector management, as surveillance programs are often the cornerstone for the development of mosquito control operations. Two traps are the most commonly used for the surveillance of adult mosquitoes: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention miniature light trap (CDC light trap) and BG-Sentinel trap (BioGents, Regensburg, Germany). However, despite the importance of the BG-Sentinel trap in surveillance programs in the United States, especially in the Southern states, its effectiveness in consistently and reliably collecting mosquitoes in rural and natural areas is still unknown. We hypothesized that BG-Sentinel and CDC light traps would be more attractive to specific mosquito species present in rural and natural areas. Therefore, our objective was to compare the relative abundance, species richness, and community composition of mosquitoes collected in natural and rural areas by BG-Sentinel and CDC light traps.MethodsMosquitoes were collected from October 2020 to March 2021 using BG-Sentinel and CDC light traps baited with dry ice, totaling 105 trap-nights.ResultsThe BG-Sentinel traps collected 195,115 mosquitoes comprising 23 species from eight genera, and the CDC light traps collected 188,594 mosquitoes comprising 23 species from eight genera. The results from the permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) and generalized estimating equation model for repeated measures indicate the BG-Sentinel and CDC light traps had similar sampling power.ConclusionEven though BG-Sentinel traps had a slightly better performance, the difference was not statistically significant indicating that both traps are suitable to be used in mosquito surveillance in rural and natural areas.Graphical
