Emerging Advances in Learned Video Compression: Models, Systems and Beyond
Video compression is a fundamental topic in the visual intelligence, bridging visual signal sensing/capturing and high-level visual analytics. The broad success of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has enriched the horizon of video compression into novel paradigms by leveraging end-to-end optimized neural models. In this survey, we first provide a comprehensive and systematic overview of recent literature on end-to-end optimized learned video coding, covering the spectrum of pioneering efforts in both uni-directional and bi-directional prediction based compression model designation. We further delve into the optimization techniques employed in learned video compression (LVC), emphasizing their technical innovations, advantages. Some standardization progress is also reported. Furthermore, we investigate the system design and hardware implementation challenges of the LVC inclusively. Finally, we present the extensive simulation results to demonstrate the superior compression performance of LVC models, addressing the question that why learned codecs and AI-based video technology would have with broad impact on future visual intelligence research.

Background:Coronary angiography and viability testing are the cornerstones of diagnosing and managing ischemic cardiomyopathy. At present, no single test serves both needs. Coronary wave intensity analysis interrogates both contractility and microvascular physiology of the subtended myocardium and therefore has the potential to fulfil the goal of completely assessing coronary physiology and myocardial viability in a single procedure. We hypothesized that coronary wave intensity analysis measured during coronary angiography would predict viability with a similar accuracy to late-gadolinium–enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Methods:Patients with a left ventricular ejection fraction ≤40% and extensive coronary disease were enrolled. Coronary wave intensity analysis was assessed during cardiac catheterization at rest, during adenosine-induced hyperemia, and during low-dose dobutamine stress using a dual pressure-Doppler sensing coronary guidewire. Scar burden was assessed with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Regional left ventricular function was assessed at baseline and 6-month follow-up after optimization of medical-therapy±revascularization, using transthoracic echocardiography. The primary outcome was myocardial viability, determined by the retrospective observation of functional recovery. Results:Forty participants underwent baseline physiology, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and echocardiography, and 30 had echocardiography at 6 months; 21/42 territories were viable on follow-up echocardiography. Resting backward compression wave energy was significantly greater in viable than in nonviable territories (−5240±3772 versus −1873±1605 W m−2 s−1, P<0.001), and had comparable accuracy to cardiac magnetic resonance imaging for predicting viability (area under the curve 0.812 versus 0.757, P=0.649); a threshold of −2500 W m−2 s−1 had 86% sensitivity and 76% specificity. Conclusions:Backward compression wave energy has accuracy similar to that of late-gadolinium–enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in the prediction of viability. Coronary wave intensity analysis has the potential to streamline the management of ischemic cardiomyopathy, in a manner analogous to the effect of fractional flow reserve on the management of stable angina.
Read moreCharacterization of multiple recycled reclaimed asphalt incorporating polymer modified bitumen
A state of the art process has been carried out to inform and improve the assessment and efficien cy of Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) containing Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) in multiple recycling of asphalt mixtures. The methodology developed included detailed laboratory investigation of the fundamental properties of RA containing PMBs and those of the binders recovered from various stages of sample manufacturing and after ageing processes. Laboratory manufactured asphalt mixtures were evaluated for stiffness, water sensitivity and deformation resistance. The key findings from this project show that asphalt mixtures produced using 50% PMB-RA have comparable mechanical properties to the mixtures containing 100% primary components (control). The recyclability assessment indicated that the desired rheological properties of the PMB were largely maintained after multiple recycling for asphalt mixtures incorporating highly polymer modified PMB. The findings from this work show the feasibility of improving sustainability by using high levels of RA with PMB.

Read morePatient and Caregiver Experiences of Living With Acute Hepatic Porphyria in the UK: A Mixed-Methods Study
Abstract BackgroundThis study used quantitative and qualitative research methods to analyze how acute hepatic porphyria (AHP) affects patients with varying annualized porphyria attack rates (AARs). The overall impact of AHP on patients and caregivers, including their quality of life, was explored. The nature and treatment of acute attacks, experiences of long-term heme arginate treatment and access to other appropriate treatment, as well as the extent of, and treatment for, chronic symptoms, were also included within this study. MethodsPatient and caregiver data were collected via an online survey of members of the British Porphyria Association, followed by an optional one-hour telephone interview. ResultsThirty-eight patients and 10 caregivers responded to the survey. Of those, 10 patients and three caregivers completed follow-up interviews. Overall, 19 patients (50%) had experienced an acute attack within the previous two years, and the severity and types of symptoms experienced during or between acute attacks varied considerably. There was no clear definition among patients or caregivers of a ‘mild’ or ‘severe’ attack. Treatment used to manage attacks also varied, and previous experience with hospital care while managing an attack also affected whether a patient chose to return to hospital or manage the attack at home. Managing the attack at home is therefore not a signifier of the severity of the attack itself. Ninety-four percent of patients also experienced chronic symptoms, which were as varied as acute attacks. Pain was the predominant chronic symptom and was managed with opioids in severe cases. Regardless of AAR, porphyria heavily impacted the daily lives of patients and caregivers. Although patients experiencing frequent attacks generally endured a greater impact on their daily life, patients with less frequent attacks also experienced impacts on all domains (social, pain, discomfort, mobility, diet, relationship with family, relationships, psychological wellbeing, finances, employment and study). Caregivers were most affected in finance, relationships with family and employment domains, and just over half of the caregivers reported a moderate impact on their psychological wellbeing. Conclusions/implicationsThe burden of illness with AHP is high across all patients, regardless of frequency of attacks, and AHP negatively affects patients and caregivers alike.
