Analysis of Bolt Failure Locations for Predictive Maintenance
In this work, a population of fractured joint bolts have been collected from automotive and tire plants, and an analysis of each bolt is performed to determine the cause of failure, and crack initiation site location on the bolt. The bolts are then grouped by failure cause and location to investigate the probability of failures and probability of failure location. The results show that low-cycle and high-cycle fatigue account for 70% of bolt failures, and that 80% of bolt failures occur deep in the threaded region in the bolt. Failure locations that were closer to the intersection of the head and the shank were only found in samples that were determined to have failed due to low-cycle fatigue. Still then, only 40% of bolt failures that result from low cycle fatigue take place closer to the head, and 60% of the failures occur in the threaded region away from the head. The results of this study can help predict the failure location on the bolt, and thus help guide preventive maintenance procedures on joint bolts.

Pediatric Sarcoma Data Forms a Unique Cluster Measured via the Earth Mover’s Distance
Abstract In this note, we combined pediatric sarcoma data from Columbia University with adult sarcoma data collected from TCGA, in order to see if one can automatically discern a unique pediatric cluster in the combined data set. Using a novel clustering pipeline based on optimal transport theory, this turned out to be the case. The overall methodology may find uses for the classification of data from other biological networking problems.

Read moreMEMS Sensors and Actuators
Over the past 30 years, significant progress has been made in the fields of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS). Originally, the term MEMS was used in the United States to signify electromechanical sensors and actuators that are based on semiconductors. In Europe, the same technology was referred to as “Microsystem Technology,” while in Japan the term micromechatronics was used. Today, the term MEMS refers to all devices, sensors, and actuators that have dimensions in the micrometer range, whether based on semiconductors or other materials such as glass and metals. In this chapter a brief review of the history is provided followed by future trends in the Micro-electro-mechanical Systems (MEMS) industry. We further present materials that are commonly used in the fabrication of MEMS sensors and actuators and we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each material. Finally, the different types, applications, and recent technologies in MEMS sensors and actuators constitute the core of this chapter.
Read moreThe magnetic and crystal structures of Sr1-δFeO2-xFx, a new oxyfluoride.
A new quasi-two-dimensional oxyfluoride, Sr1-δFeO2-xFx, has been successfully synthesized by combining topotactic fluoridation and CaH2 reduction. The introduction of F through this synthesis provides a new route to introducing charge carriers into the square layered lattice through the formation of Fe(1+) ions. While the average crystal symmetry and magnetic structure remain the same as in the parent compound, the addition of F results in an enhanced buckling of the Fe(O/F)2 square plaquettes that is most likely topologically driven.
Read moreThe Origin of Language and its Link with Music according to the Theory of Jābir ibn Ḣayyān
Jābir ibn Ḣayyān took advantage of the vast translation enterprise of Greek scientific works into Arabic. He quotes from these sources, including several whose Greek originals are lost. His works can be likened to the encyclopedia of Ikhwān al-Ṡafā’, the most important transmission of Pythagorean tradition. In this Epistle on Music the Ikhwān followed Jābir's method, and perhaps were influenced by him, in analysing the relationship between language and music, together with the arithmetical speculations that were widely influential. In this article, I have attempted to collect Jābir's scattered ideas on the origin of language and music trying to assemble the major ones in a coherent exposition.
