Patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) in research is crucial for producing knowledge that is meaningful to the participating community. Sharing PPIE principles into practical tools and strategies enriches the development of participatory research methodologies. This article describes the co-creation process of ProSafe, a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) project conducted in Italy, which explores community perspectives on the reorganization of territorial healthcare toward proximity care. The aims are: (1) to describe the co-creation process, (2) to examine its successes and challenges, and (3) to propose strategies and practical recommendations for fostering partnerships and engagement throughout all research stages. The project is based on an explanatory sequential mixed-method design. A Patient Safety Council (PSC) acted as a co-researcher. The five-level spectrum of public engagement developed by the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) guided the analysis of the decision-making power balance between academics and the PSC at each phase. Emphasis was given to the process of survey co-creation. A SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis was performed to identify strategies and practical recommendations to strengthen engagement. The SWOT analysis results informed the development of OPERA-PACT (Opening a Participatory and Equitable Research Agreement based on Partnership, Awareness, Collaboration, and Trust), a framework co-created with the PSC to formalize shared principles, values, and attitudes that sustain collaborative partnerships. The framework also includes a commitment to continuous monitoring, verification, and feedback to reinforce partnership over time. All instruments, strategies, and methodological insights proposed in the article may serve as practical support tools to strengthen the voice of communities in research and to contribute to the production of valid and translational results. Implementing the OPERA-PACT framework may further help align team members with PPIE principles and lay the foundation for effective and sustainable collaboration.

In recent years, renewable energy production has expanded rapidly, becoming an essential component of the global energy transition. However, the inherent variability and unpredictability of renewable generation require technologies that can provide grid stability and operational flexibility. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) play a central role in addressing this challenge, but their long-term effectiveness depends on a thorough understanding of their degradation mechanisms. This work aims to model and predict the capacity and power degradation of a real-world BESS operating in the electricity market, bridging the gap between laboratory-based ageing studies and field applications. Several degradation indicators, such as available capacity evolution, DC efficiency evolution, conductivity loss, and loss of lithium inventory, were evaluated to determine which models best describe the system’s ageing behaviour. Some estimations were found inaccurate and subsequently excluded, while the remaining analyses enabled a detailed characterisation of BESS performance over time. Using operational data collected between November 2022 and October 2024, results indicate a linear capacity degradation reaching 4.57% over 23 months (490 equivalent cycles), from approximately 9600 kWh to 9150 kWh, with a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 0.2%. DC efficiency exhibited a two-phase evolution, with an initial rise followed by a slow reduction trend. These findings confirm that ageing effects can be effectively evaluated using operational data, enabling reliable lifetime forecasting for BESS assets.

The overwhelming increase of parcel transports has prompted the need for effective and scalable intelligent logistics systems. In parallel, with the advent of Industry 4.0, a tight integration of Internet of Things technologies and Big Data analytics solution has become necessary to effectively manage industrial processes and to early predict product faults or service disruptions. In the context of good transports, the development of smart monitoring tools is particularly useful for couriers to ensure effective and efficient parcel deliveries. However, the existing predictive maintenance frameworks are not tailored to parcel delivery services. We present REDTag Service, an integrated framework to track and monitor the shipped packages. It relies on a network of IoT-enabled devices, called REDTags, allowing courier employees to easily collect the status of the package at each delivery step. The framework provides back-end functionalities for smart data transmission, management, storage, and analytics. A machine-learning process is included to promptly analyze the features describing event-related data to predict potential breaks of the goods in the packages. The framework provides also a dynamic view on the integrated data tailored to the different stakeholders, as well as on the prediction outcomes, enabling immediate feedback and model improvements. We analyze a real-world dataset including event-related data about parcel transports. To validate the hypothesis that the acquired data contains information relevant to predict the package status (i.e., broken or safe), we empirically analyze the performance of different, scalable classifiers. The experimental results confirm, in good approximation, the predictive power of the models extracted from the event-related features. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this work is the first attempt to address predictive maintenance in smart good transport logistics to predict package breaks from real-world data.

General skincare measures such as the use of moisturisers and products containing adequate photoprotection are important components of acne patients' management to complement the pharmacological regimen. Acne RA-1,2 is a novel dermato-cosmetic product which contains selective photofilters and active ingredients against the multifactorial pathophysiology of acne. To evaluate the tolerability of Acne RA-1,2 and its effect on the clinical signs of acne. This double-blind, placebo-controlled study randomized 40 adult patients with 10-25 comedones per half face to once-daily application of Acne RA-1,2 or placebo for 8weeks. Evaluations after 4 and 8weeks included the number of comedones, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), sebum production, and tolerability. In the Acne RA-1,2 group, there was a significant 35% decrease in the mean number of comedones from 26 at baseline to 17 at Week 8 (P<.001), a 7% significant reduction in TEWL (9.32 to 8.66g/h/m2 ; P<.001), and a 24% significant reduction in sebum production (154.8 to 117.6μg/cm2 ; P<.001). The reductions in TEWL and sebum production were significantly greater than those in the placebo group at Weeks 4 and 8 (P<0.05). There were no adverse events. Acne RA-1,2 was well tolerated and effective at reducing comedones and sebum production and improving epidermal barrier function. These results suggest that Acne RA-1,2 is useful against acne-prone facial skin, particularly as it targets sebum production, which topical pharmacological acne therapies do not address.

Although severe stress can elicit toxicity, mild stress often elicits adaptations. Here we review the literature on stress-induced adaptations versus stress sensitization in models of neurodegenerative diseases. We also describe our recent findings that chronic proteotoxic stress can elicit adaptations if the dose is low but that high-dose proteotoxic stress sensitizes cells to subsequent challenges. In these experiments, long-term, low-dose proteasome inhibition elicited protection in a superoxide dismutase-dependent manner. In contrast, acute, high-dose proteotoxic stress sensitized cells to subsequent proteotoxic challenges by eliciting catastrophic loss of glutathione. However, even in the latter model of synergistic toxicity, several defensive proteins were upregulated by severe proteotoxicity. This led us to wonder whether high-dose proteotoxic stress can elicit protection against subsequent challenges in astrocytes, a cell type well known for their resilience. In support of this new hypothesis, we found that the astrocytes that survived severe proteotoxicity became harder to kill. The adaptive mechanism was glutathione dependent. If these findings can be generalized to the human brain, similar endogenous adaptations may help explain why neurodegenerative diseases are so delayed in appearance and so slow to progress. In contrast, sensitization to severe stress may explain why defenses eventually collapse in vulnerable neurons.

Following the 53rd annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) in San Diego in December 2011, a group of clinical and laboratory investigators convened for the 6th Post-ASH International Workshop on Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) and Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN). The Workshop took place on 13–14 December at the Estancia, La Jolla, California, USA. This report summarizes the most recent advances in the biology and therapy of CML that were presented at the ASH meeting and discussed at the Workshop. Preclinical studies focused on the CML stem cell and its niche, and on early results of deep sequencing of CML genomes. Clinical advances include updates on second- and third-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), molecular monitoring, TKI discontinuation studies and new therapeutic agents. A report summarizing the pertinent advances in MPN has been published separately.

We analyzed muscle injuries collected from an Italian major-league soccer team during the period 1995-2000. We considered all the muscle accidents that had required a player to stand down for three or more days. Among the overall injuries, muscle accidents were the most frequent, representing 30% (103 cases), followed by contusions (28%), sprains (17%) and tendinopathies (9%). There was one recurrence involving the hamstring. Lack of training was one of the causes of such injuries; in fact the training/match ratio of those seasons (3.6 to 1) show that there was little time for training compared to the number of matches.
